Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research intended to find the values of expectancy in Front of the Class film. The researcher analyzed the values of expectancy that depicted through Brad Cohen character and Cohen’s mother character. The data were analyzed with expectancy-value theory by Charles S. Carver and Michael F. Scheier. The data were generated from the dialogues and the actions of the characters in their struggle facing the adversity and to obtain their goals. In conclusion, this research revealed the values of expectancy that depicted from Brad Cohen character and Cohen’s mother character. Those are the goals that they had as a desirable and the values that Brad saw as undesirable. Also expectancy, that is sense of confidence from Brad Cohen and his mother about the eventual outcome of their efforts and sense of doubt from Brad Cohen about the eventual outcome of his efforts. Finally, the conclusion that can be drawn is that the findings in this research strengthen the fact that there are values of expectancy in Front of the Class film. Such as; Brad’s desire to be a teacher and all the concrete actions, also Cohen’s mother’s desire to cure Brad and to make Brad having a normal life and all the concrete actions to obtain it. Furthermore, the other findings of expetancy-value are those the refusal of Brad Cohen and Cohen’s mother to be different from people in a group of Tourette syndrome and also the refusal of Brad Cohen about an offer from Cohen’s father to be a building worker. Then, the sense of confidence of Brad Cohen and Cohen’s mother are also the values of expectancy. Those are sense of confidence about the eventual outcome of the struggle to be a teacher and the eventual outcome to cure Brad and to make Brad have a normal life, and also when Brad Cohen becomes doubtful about his effort to be a teacher.Key words: the values of expectancy, goals, expectancy ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan nilai-nilai harapan (expectancy) dalam film Front of the Class. Peneliti menganalisis nilai-nilai harapan (expectancy) yang tergambarkan melalui tokoh Brad Cohen dan tokoh ibu Cohen. Data dianalisis dengan teori nilai harapan (expectancy-value) oleh Charles S. Carver dan Michael F. Scheier. Data tersebut dihasilkan dari dialog-dialog dan tindakan-tindakan dari tokoh-tokoh tersebut dalam perjuangan mereka menghadapi kemalangan dan perjuangan mereka untuk menggapai tujuan-tujuan mereka. Kesimpulannya, penelitian ini mengungkapkan nilai-nilai harapan yang tergambarkan dari tokoh Brad Cohen dan tokoh ibu Cohen. Yaitu tujuan-tujuan yang mereka miliki sebagai sesuatu yang diinginkan dan nilai-nilai yang Brad lihat sebagai sesuatu yang tidak diinginkan, dan juga harapan, yaitu rasa percaya diri dari Brad Cohen dan ibunya terhadap hasil akhir dari usaha-usaha mereka dan rasa ragu dari Brad Cohen terhadap hasil akhir dari usaha-usahanya. Akhirnya, kesimpulan yang dapat ditarik adalah bahwa temuan dalam penelitian ini memperkuat fakta bahwa terdapat nilai-nilai harapan dalam film Front of the Class. Seperti; hasrat Brad untuk menjadi seorang guru dan semua tindakan-tindakan  konkritnya, juga hasrat ibu Cohen untuk menyembuhkan Brad dan untuk membuat Brad memiliki kehidupan yang normal dan semua tindakan-tindakan konkrit untuk menggapainya. Lebih lagi, penemuan-penemuan Expectancy-value  lainnya adalah penolakan dari Brad Cohen dan ibu Cohen untuk menjadi berbeda dari orang-orang dalam sebuah kelompok Tourette syndrome dan juga penolakan dari Brad Cohen terhadap tawaran dari ayah Cohen untuk menjadi seorang pekerja bangunan. Lalu, rasa percaya diri dari Brad Cohen dan ibu Cohen adalah juga nilai-nilai dari expectancy. Yaitu rasa percaya diri terhadap hasil akhir dari perjuangan untuk menjadi seorang guru dan hasil akhir untuk menyembuhkan Brad dan untuk membuatnya memiliki kehidupan yang normal, dan juga ketika Brad Cohen menjadi ragu terhadap usahanya untuk menjadi seorang guru.Kata kunci:     Nilai-nilai harapan, tujuan-tujuan, harapan

Abstract

This study analyzes the types and functions used by Boris Johnson in his speech about COVID-19 pandemic. In education, this can help students to learn how to express something in English. The researcher uses five speeches that was conducted by Boris Johnson from 23 March 2020 to 31 October 2020. The researcher uses content analysis method on qualitative approach to describe and analyze the illocutionary act performed by Boris Johnson and then classifies them according to Searle’s theory of illocutionary act. The result is that Boris has performed 160 representatives illocutionary act, 48 directives, 54 comissives, 49 expressives, and 14 declaratives. As for the illocutionary act performed by Boris, he has performed 158 collaborative function, 118 convivial function, 46 competitive, and just 2 conflictive.

Abstract

Language attitude is considered as the key factor that influence students’ motivation to learn and determine the results of studying a language. Therefore, the objective of this study is to find out the fourth semester students’ language attitude toward their speaking skill implemented in the classroom and the factors affecting their attitudes. The research methodology utilized a qualitative case study design. The participants of this study were six students of the fourth semester of English Education Department at Mulawarman University which were selected by using purposive sampling. The data of this research were collected through interview and were analyzed by using Thematic Analysis adopted from Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings discovered that three students have positive attitudes and the others have negative attitudes. Ideally, student with positive attitude will have good score in speaking. However, the researcher found that P4 has negative attitude even though she has middle score in speaking. This case is caused by internal and external factors that make P4 has negative attitude. Moreover, findings also showed that students’ positive attitude were mainly influenced by parents’ roles, teacher’s attitudes, inter-ethnic contact and some psychological factors such as self-confidence and high motivation. In addition, students’ negative attitudes were influenced by lack of desire to speak English and teacher high expectation. Further research may be recommended to find out different factors that might affect student’s attitude with different methodology such as conduct some observations in the classroom to see the implementation of students speaking skill which can reflect their attitude and enrich the data findings. Language attitude knowledge could help the students to motivate them in maintaining their positive attitude. Besides, parents and English teacher could support and encourage the students to increase their positive attitude in learning a language

Abstract

This article reports on a study that investigated the effectiveness of direct-focused corrective feedback and metalinguistic focused feedback on EFL learners’ accuracy in using English articles. The study employed a pretest–posttest design with five treatment sessions. The design of this study was quasi-experimental design. The sample of this study were 60 of the eleventh grade science students. They were assigned into two groups, direct-focused corrective feedback group and metalinguistic-focused feedback group. The linguistic target was English articles. A fill in the blank exercise were employed to measure any development in learners’ ability to use articles. The results revealed that both direct-focused corrective feedback and metalinguistic focused feedback lead to greater learners’ accuracy of using English articles. The direct-focused feedback is found more effective than metalinguistic-focused feedback.

Abstract

One of the practical applications of technology integration in the educational field is a web-based test. Since students need to be involved in the classroom assessment decision, knowing their perceptions toward the use of evaluation media is deemed important. Thus, this study was aimed to identify the students’ perceptions on the use of web-based tests in an English class and to examine the problems experienced by students when using them in the classrooms. One hundred fourteen high school students participated in this study. This study utilized a survey which consisted of both open and close ended questions. A google form-based questionnaire was used to collect the data from the selected participants. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistical analysis. The result of this study indicated that the students had positive perceptions of the use of web-based tests. However, they experienced some problems during the implementation of the web-based tests. The problems include the mobile device breakdown, lack of security, unfamiliarity, internet connection issue, server failure, browser incompatibility, mobile device unavailability, mobile device incompatibility, and time limitation. The study also found that the most frequent problem experienced by students was the server failure problem. Some pedagogical implications of this study were discussed.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui minat baca anak serta faktor-faktor pendukung minat baca anak. Penelitian ini mengunakan disain penelitian berupa studi kasus. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah seorang anak SD Swasta di kota Samarinda bernama Cassey yang mempunyaikebiasaanmembacaluarbiasadanbisadigolongkan anakyang gemar membaca. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori minat baca anak. Instrument berupa observasi dan interview/wawancara. Temuan yang diperoleh adalah Cassey adalah seorang anak yang memiliki minat baca. Kebiasaan membaca Cassey timbul sejak masa kanak-kanak (usia 4 tahun). Minat dan kebiasaan ini muncul dengan sendirinya tanpa ada permintaan dari orang tua untuk dia membaca. Peran orang tua dan kondisi ekonomi keluarga sangat berpengaruh terhadap minat dan kebiasaan membaca yang tumbuh pada diri Cassey.

Abstract

Kebesaran dan keunikan budaya Dayak sudah seharusnya diperkenalkan lebih baik kepada masyarakat Indonesia sendiri dan juga masyarakat mancanegara. Salah satu kegiatan yang dapat mensosialisasikan dan meningkatkan motivasi generasi muda untuk melestarikan budaya adalah dengan menyediakan bahan ajar bahasa Inggris berbasis budaya, khususnya Dayak, di tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas. Bahan ajar memiliki nilai ilmu yang tinggi dan penting untuk pendidikan budaya siswa. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: (1) untuk mengetahui tema apa dalam bahan ajar yang dapat memotivasi dan menambah wawasan siswa SMA dalam melestarikan budaya, khususnya Dayak, dan (2) untuk mengetahui bagaimanakah rancangan bahan ajar bahasa Inggris yang sesuai dengan kebutuhan siswa SMA dalam melestarikan budaya, khususnya Dayak. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan penelitian R&D (Research and Development) atau penelitian dan pengembangan karena menghasilkan produk berupa bahan ajar. Data yang diperlukan untuk penelitian ini berupa materi pelajaran yang diperoleh dengan mengumpulkan informasi mengenai kebutuhan bahan ajar, tema, dan rancangan bahan ajar yang berkaitan dengan adat, seni, dan budaya suku Dayak. Adapun tema atau topik yang akan disajikan sebagai hasil dari penelitian ini berupa: pakaian adat Dayak, macam-macam budaya Dayak, kuliner khas Dayak Kaltim, musik tradisional Dayak Kaltim, ritual adat suku Dayak Kaltim, tarian tradisional Dayak Kaltim, dan suku Dayak yang diterjemahkan ke dalam bahasa Inggris. Sementara itu, rancangan bahan ajar disusun dalam dua bahasa yaitu bahasa Inggris dan bahasa Indonesia berisikan konten budaya dalam bentuk teks bacaan beserta tugas/aktivitas yang diterbitkan dalam bentuk buku.
