Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study concerned in finding out the types of social interaction performed by Dido character and her personality traits in Belle film. This study used two theories to answer the two objectives of this study which were Tischler’s social interaction and Costa & McCrae’s big five personality traits. The data of this study were pictures and words (in forms of narration and dialogue) related to the social interaction and personality traits of Dido character that were obtained from Belle film and its film script. The results of this study showed Dido as the main character of Belle film performed four types of social interaction such as nonverbal behaviour interaction, exchange interaction, cooperative interaction, and conflict interaction. Meanwhile, Dido’s personality traits were identified into extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. This study concluded that in performing the social interaction, Dido character tended to take account of her objectives and also involved her personality traits to achieve the best form of interaction.Keywords: sociology, social interaction, personality traits, character ABSTRAK Penelitian ini berfokus untuk mencari tahu tipe-tipe interaksi sosial yang dilakukan oleh Dido beserta sifat-sifat kepribadiannya dalam film Belle. Penelitian ini menggunakan dua teori untuk menjawab dua pertanyaan yaitu interaksi sosial milik Tischler dan lima sifat utama dalam kepribadian milik Costa dan McCrae. Data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berupa gambar-gambar dan kata-kata (dalam bentuk narasi dan dialog) yang berhubungan dengan tipe-tipe interaksi sosial dan sifat-sifat kepribadian karakter Dido yang diambil dalam film Belle dan skrip filmnya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Dido sebagai karakter utama dalam film Belle melakukan empat tipe interaksi sosial seperti perilaku interaksi non-verbal, interaksi pertukaran, interaksi kerjasama, dan interaksi konflik. Sementara itu, sifat-sifat kepribadian Dido diidentifikasikan sebagai extraversi, terbuka terhadap hal-hal baru, mudah bersepakat, dan sifat berhati-hati. Penelitian ini mengambil kesimpulan bahwa dalam melakukan interaksi sosialnya, karakter Dido cenderung mempertimbangkan terlebih dahulu tujuan-tujuannya dan mengikutsertakan sifat-sifat kepribadiannya agar dapat mencapai bentuk interaksi sosial yang terbaik.Kata Kunci: sosiologi, interaksi sosial, sifat-sifat kepribadian, karakter

Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the masculinity traits in Jesminder Bhamra of Bend It Like Beckham film based on Bem’s theory and to find out the characteristics of Jesminder Bhamra as portrayed in the film by using Reaske’s theory of characterization. This study used qualitative design with content analysis approach. The source of data in this study was Bend It Like Beckham film script, while the data consisted of dialogues, utterances, and scenes related to Jesminder Bhamra’s masculinity traits. From the total twenty indicators of masculinity traits, Jesminder Bhamra showed to have eight kinds of masculinity traits such as aggresive, ambitious, analytical, athletic, competitive, defends own belief, has leadership ability, and masculine. Jesminder Bhamra character was characterized through the five tools of characterization from the six tools in Reaske’s theory; they are appearance, aside and soliloquy, dialogues, hidden narration, and actions.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon and Patsey characters of 12 Years A Slave movie. In order to do so, this study used Allport’s theory of intentional, explicit discrimination focusing on several types of racial discrimination such as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. The data used in this study were words in forms of narration, dialogue, and action related to the portrayal of racial discrimination towards Solomon and Patsey characters that were taken from 12 Years A Slave movie script. This study showed that the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon and Patsey characters of 12 Years A Slave movie was classified into five types of intentional, explicit discrimination behaviours such as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. On one hand, the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon character was included as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, physical attacks, and extermination. On the other hand, the portrayal as shown in Patsey character was a bit different since Patsey did not experience any segregation treatment. This study concluded the portrayal of racial discrimination as shown in Solomon and Patsey characters occured as the result of white supremacy ideology as the basis thinking and belief of most white characters in the movie.

Abstract

This study describes the types of gender discrimination and racial discrimination that are obtained by African-American women characters the in Hidden Figures film. In order to describe the two unfair treatments, this study uses two theories such as Lorber’s gender inequality and Miles’ racism. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The data of this study were taken from Hidden Figures film in the forms of words and scenes related to the two concerns of unfair treatment. This study found eight data of gender discrimination and ten data of racial discrimination that were obtained by the three African-American women characters of Hidden Figures film. The result of this study showed that: (1) Katherine obtained the treatments of gender discrimination through educational and cultural aspects and racially discriminated through the institutional and ultimately teleological racisms; (2) Dorothy obtained the gender discrimination treatments through the aspect of culture and racially discriminated by the institutional and ultimately teleological racisms; and (3) Mary obtained the gender discrimination treatments through the educational, cultural, and racial aspects and racially discriminated by the institutional racism. This study concludes that the three African-American women experience unfair treatments in two forms which are the gender discrimination and racial discrimination.
