Abstract

This research has examined the marxist feminist and patriarchy as the types and form of female issues based on research questions. By using qualitative method, this research uses qualitative research managed to find the issues that occur in this film about how capitalists and patriarchy create the issues toward women. This research tries to identify the types of woman issues contained in the film Suffragette. This film is directed by Sara Gavron. The Suffragette film was inspired by the true story of a group of women activists led by Emmeline Pankhurst, in fighting for women's rights to political and economic participation. Suffragette tells the story using the perspective of the character of Maud Watts, a laundry service worker who joined Pankhurst in raising the issue of women's rights to vote before Parliament; which allowed mainly for upper class men. This research shows the imbalance of political opportunity between the upper class and lower class the dominance of masculinity over female workers. The values of Marxist Feminism were seen through scenes when the character of Maud Watts  testifies before the court and in the Horse Race scene in which the Suffragette groups protest. The court scene shows opposition from women's labor groups, representing women to fight for equality between men and women.

Then John who was considered as a bad husband, superior and strong man, apparently after the characteristics were deconstructed he was also a very good husband, inferior man and weak man. Likewise, Jennie who was originally considered a good and perfect woman, apparently she could be considered as a bad woman.

This study attempts to analyze the portrayal of the Mumbai attacks and the contradiction points in the Hotel Mumbai film. This film is made based on the true events of the Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008. Related to these huge events, there are a lot of historical books that have covered the Mumbai terrorist attacks. This study is conducted by applying a new historicism approach and intrinsic elements of literature, the researcher compares the official history and the film. Through the new historicism approach, the researcher discovers that the Hotel Mumbai film places a lot of differences. First, there is a difference regarding the characters positioning, Arjun’s character in the film is the amalgam of the real story of Karambir Kang and Amit Pashave. Second, there is a difference in the narrative structure of Zahra – Seyfi & Meltem in which Zahra’s character was not killed because she said two sentences of creed. While, as what is told in the historical record, there was a Turkish couple named Seyfi and Maltem Muezzinoglu who were held as hostages and witnessed the murder of another hostage but they were not killed by the terrorist because they prayed in Arabic loudly. Third, there is a very clear difference between the setting of place and time. The report Mumbai terrorist attacks in history happened in six places and lasted for four days, meanwhile, the portrayal in the film happened in three places and lasted for a day. Lastly, this film has picked up the narrative elements to show what has not been known by the public only by reading the official version of history. The goal is to show that a historical-based film can be aimed to gain equal representation of historical narratives from a different point of view.

Abstract

Feminism issues are often radically depicted in literary works, especially in a film today. Filmmakers emphasize these issues to raise women’s awareness about the oppression that might happen to them. This radical movement happens because they try to create an idealistic society for women. From this premise, radical feminism was born because the previous movement could not undo the women’s oppression as time goes throughout the decades. Adjusting to the patriarchal system, women are often portrayed as unique and unusual to be treated as equal to men. This study aims to analyze the radical feminism of Natalie Artemis’ character in Monster Hunter film using Tong’s radical feminism and Petrie and Boggs’ characterization theories. This research used Uwe’s qualitative descriptive method and Mikos’ film analysis theory. The researcher confirms that Natalie Artemis’ character is portrayed as a radical feminist through radical libertarians and radical cultural feminists’ ideas in the Monster Hunter film. These ideas are portrayed through Natalie Artemis’ androgynous appearance and gender portrayal.
