THE USE OF FOUR-SQUARE WRITING TO IMPROVE THE WRITING ABILITY OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXTS BY THE FIRST YEAR (X.1) STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 4 PEKANBARU Felci Tria Sauhana

This research aims to know whether Four-Square Writing Method could improve the students' ability in writing descriptive texts and also the factors that contribute to the improvement. The writer collected the quantitative data by using writing tests and qualitative by using observation sheets and field notes. The minimum criteria of the successful action were 75. Before applying the Four-Square Writing Method, the students were given a pre-test to know their writing ability or their base score. After applying the Four-Square Writing Method, the students' score increased from pre-test to post-test 1 and post-test 2. Based on the data analysis, the students' score improved from 68,97 in the pre-test, to 72,77 in the post-test 1 and 75,40 in post-test 2. Furthermore, based on the data analysis of students' observation sheet, there is a significant functional improvement of students' activities during teaching and learning process from Cycle 1 (58,05% ) to Cycle 2 (82,18%). Besides, based on the data analysis of teacher’s observation sheet, it also proved that there was a good improvement from teacher’s activities in Cycle 1 (72,22%) to Cycle 2 (91,67% ). Therefore, the use of Four-Square Writing Method can improve the ability to write descriptive texts by the first year (X.1) students of SMA Negeri 4 Pekanbaru.

Pentingnya mempelajari Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa international di era ini semakin disadari oleh para orangtua. Selain di sekolah, mereka mengantar anak-anaknya untuk belajar bahasa inggris di tempat-tempat kursus. Namun sayangnya tidak semua anak memperoleh kesempatan baik tersebut. Karena, yang pertama, tidak semua sekolah dasar menyediakan pelajaran Bahasa Inggris dan, yang kedua, tidak semua orangtua mampu mengantarkan anak-anaknya ke tempat kursus. Berangkat dari dua alasan inilah tim PKM mengadakan kegiatan pengajaran kepada anak-anak usia sekolah dasar yang tinggal di sekitar lingkungan pemakaman umum Tanjung Harapan, Tembilahan. Mereka adalah 14 siswa sekolah dasar yang sama sekali belum pernah mempelajari Bahasa Inggris baik di sekolah maupun di luar sekolah. Mereka mengikuti kegiatan ini selama enam pertemuan dengan tema fruits, animals, dan parts of my body. Media visual berupa flashcard dan games diimplementasikan untuk menciptakan suasana belajar yang menyenangkan dan bermakna. Menyenangkan karena mereka belajar sambil bermain dan bermakna karena menambah pengetahuan berupa kosakata Bahasa Inggris.

As learners of the English language, they were good readers is one of the main aims. To realize this one is not an easy act. There are many influences; one of them is sociolinguistic. This research purposed to describe the influence of sociolinguistic on the learners as the reader. This is a Descriptive Research. The research participants were the Fourth Semester of English Study Program students at the Islamic University of Indragiri Tembilahan. The data was collected from spreading the questionnaire. After analyzing the data, the researcher found a very significant influence than the other very high influence was motivation, which motivation is imperative for the learner as the reader. The mean score of all indicators was 77.93; it was indicated that the influence of sociolinguistics on the learner as the reader was great.

The main purpose of this study was to describe the students' ability to use expressions. This research was conducted at the seventh grade of MTs Al-Rasyid Tanjung Siantar from January to February 2021. It is descriptive research and uses total sampling technique in selecting the samples. There are 24 students to be the sample in this research. The data were collected by using a test. The researcher got the result that more than 50 % of the students could use expressions with a total mean score of 72 in the the good category. The total mean score is taken from 5 indicators, that were students' ability In using greeting expression with mean score 80.83 in the good category, leave taking expression with mean score 70.83 in the good category, thank you/ gratitude expression with mean score 75 in the good category, apology expression with mean score 64.16 in the good category, and the students' ability in using self-introduction expression with mean score 69.16 in the poor category. The researcher concluded that the students' ability to use expressions was good, a total score of 72. It means they have a good understanding of expressions, mainly greeting expressions.

This study was a descriptive study that aimed to determine students' learning styles in learning English. The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Tembilahan Hulu using random sampling technique. The data collection method used is a questionnaire. The results of this study of learning style tendencies indicated that the learning style with the number of respondents was 30 students with average score of 93.38 into the enough category. In addition, it was found that learning outcomes with visual learning styles were included in the “Enough category” with an average score of 95.13, auditory learning styles were in the “Good category” with average score of 104, and kinesthetic learning styles were included in the “Enough category” with average score of 81. Thus the learning style applied in the eighth grade was more likely to be an auditory learning style with the number of respondents being 30 students and obtaining learning outcomes in a good category with an average value of 104. From these results, it can be concluded that the eight SMP N 1 Tembilahan Hulu pay less attention to their learning style. This could be one of the reasons why some of the scores of their kinesthetic learning style showed less and bad categories. Besides that, it could be a reminder for teachers to be able to prepare strategies in growing student learning styles that could help to improve students in learning English. This research aimed to know the effect of using Collaborative Strategy Reading on students reading comprehension at SMAN 1 Tembilahan. The researcher found several problem experianced by students in english, such as: Students had difficulty understanding reading texts, some students not able to get information from the text, students need much time to comprehend the text, and students have problems answering the reading passage. Collaborative Strategy Reading is useful for students skill in reading comprehension. The design of this research was the tenth grade of SMAN 1Tembilaha 2022/2023 academic year. The population of this research was 312 students consist of 9 classes. While, the sample of this research was two classes consist of 68 students. The sample of this class was X.MIPA5 as control group and X.MIPA4 as experimental class. To get the data of this research, the researcher gave test as insruments which included pre-test and post-test. For the pre-test and post-test in the form of multiple choices test, consist of 2o items questions for each. The learning prosess was three meetings. The finding of this research showed that the avarage score in pre-test was 38,5 while in post-test was 66,3 for the experimental group. The mean score of post-test was higher than the mean score of pre-test. The result of analysis, it showed that the value Tobserved 3,39 was higher than Ttable was 2,00 in significant 5% based on the result, it was provided that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In making observation, the researcher found that many students had problems in learning methods in class and also problems in reading comprehension because of them felt that they did not know what the text was about. In reading ability the students find it difficult to understand the text given during the learning process in the class. In this research, the researcher used the Quizizz application with different features than usual but it is more effective in evaluating students learning in teaching reading in a text. The population of this study was all second semester students, totaling 20 students in English Study Program at Islamic University of Indragiri. To get the research data, the researcher gave a test as an instrument. The result of this study indicate that the average score in before using quizizz was 46 while in after using quizizz was 38. The result of analysis, it showed that the value T-observed 1.23 was lower than T-table was 2.03 and 2.72 in significant 5% and 1%. Based on the result, it was provided that the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected. Therefore, there was no a significant effect of using quizizz on students’ ability in reading comprehension at English Study Program Islamic University of Indragiri.

The problem of this research was the tenth-grade students of Eleventh Grade of SMAN Islam Terpadu Syech Walid Thaib Shaleh Indragiri Sungai Iliran feel difficult to answer some questions in reading. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to know “factors causing students difficulties in understanding Reading Text”. This research was descriptive quantitative research. The researcher was distributing questionnaire to 20 respondents to answer the purpose above. The sample was taken by using total sampling, because the sample is limited. After collecting the data, the researcher found that there are four factors causing students difficulties in understanding reading text at Eleventh Grade of SMAN Islam Terpadu Syech Walid Thaib Shaleh Indragiri. They are feeling bored and lazy in reading, cannot use the leisure time maximally for reading, lack of English book at school and uninteresting teaching learning process.
