Abstract

This study is a contextual theological inquiry rooted in the spiritual tension experienced by Batak Toba Christians, who navigate between church prohibitions against engaging with ancestral spirits and their continued participation in cultural rites such as ziarah kubur (grave visitation) and mangongkal holi (exhumation ritual). The study seeks to reinterpret this tension theologically by adopting a posture of “listening” to local culture as an integral act of doing theology. “Listening” is understood not merely as empathetic openness, but as a theological act that creates space for transformative dialogue between the Gospel and indigenous tradition. Using a qualitative, literature-based approach with narrative-hermeneutic and reflective analysis, the research draws on Stephen B. Bevans’ Synthetic Model and the contextual insights of Imanuel Martasudjita. The findings suggest that Batak Toba rituals can be interpreted as means of grace, where believers encounter God within their historical and communal life. This study contributes to Indonesian contextual theology by integrating faith, culture, and Christian doctrine through an interpretive hermeneutic lens.

Abstract

Experience of encountering and being together with friends of a number of other religious traditions has contributed to changing the way one thinks, speaks and acts. This occurs only when there is a sincere readiness to open oneself to the other while at the same time acknowledging and appreciating plurality in the human family. In the Christian Church, both Catholic and Protestant, this can be understood as a result of the Second Vatican Council. In the context of Indonesia, and more specifically in Jogyakarta and in NTT Province, ecumenical relations between Catholics and Protestants indicate a desire for renewal (aggiornamento) in our common life. This is clear in collaboration between institutes of higher education, such as studying theology together, the use of a common Bible, acceptance of the deuterokanonika, meditation in common, and so forth. In such togetherness the ecclesial unity that Jesus prayed for derives its meaning. Kata-kata kunci: Perjumpaan, pembaruan, kesatuan, oikumene, tantangan, misi, kontekstualisasi, persaudaraan sejati
