Abstract

TOEFL adalah kepanjangan dari Test of English as a Foreign Language (Test Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing), yang dibuat oleh ETS (Educational Testing Service), sebuah lembaga di Amerika Serikat. Secara umum tes ini untuk menilai kemampuan menulis dan tata bahasa yang baik dalam bahasa Inggris agar mampu membuat tulisan ilmiah. TOEFL sangatlah dibutuhkan oleh semua kalangan tidak hanya oleh mahasiswa. Berdasarkan studi awal dengan melibatkan mahasiswa dan umum sebagai sampel didapatkan bahwa 98% menyatakan bahwa mereka membutuhkan sebuah pelatihan TOEFL karena mengingat pentingnya TOEFL dalam dunia pendidikan dan dunia kerja. Akan tetapi adanya pemberlakuan Social Distancing yang diberlakukan oleh pemerintah menjadikan pelatihan dan pembelajaran dilakukan salah satunya menggunakan solusi aplikasi interface online yaitu menggunakan aplikasi Zoom. Tujuan pengabdian ini memberikan pelatihan TOEFL untuk umum dengan menggunakan aplikasi Zoom. Metode pelatihan ini kegiatan pelaksanaan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini terbagi menjadi tiga tahap, yaitu persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan tahap monitoring.  Dampak dari kegiatan ini adalah: 1) terciptanya situasi dan kondisi pelatihan TOEFL yang dapat menaikan motivasi belajar, 2) terciptanya respon postif dari para peserta yang ikut dalam pelatihan ini, dan 3) peningkatan pengetahuan tentang tips dan trik menjawab soal tes TOEFL.

Abstract

Media is one important component that can be used by teachers to teach. In teaching English, the media is known as a tool to assist teachers in delivering material to students. Using media in teaching engages students and can help motivate students to learn. This study used quantitative research with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The population is all students of Senior High School of Muhammadiyah Gadingrejo and the sample is 16 people. Data were taken from test results and analyzed with quantitative data using data collection procedures in the pre-test (written test), treatment (learning) using Card media and post-test (written test). The test given is a written test in the form of multiple choices related to the theme to be presented, namely about congratulation and complement. on the initial test (pre-test) to get an average of 55.63, then given treatment in the form of delivering material using Card media and practicing dialogue on the material that has been delivered and getting the results of the final test (post-test) with an average of 70.12. so that it increased by14.49. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use card media which is applied in learning can affect students' speaking abilities. The results of this study indicate that card media can be applied in the teaching and learning process, especially in improving the speaking skills of Senior High School students of Muhammadiyah Gadingrejo.

Abstract

In learning a language, the first thing to grasp is words. One method of word formation is compounding, which involves combining two elements from existing words to create a new word. Compounds are categorized into three groups based on the part of speech: nominal compounds, verbal compounds, and adjectival compounds. The formation of compound words gives rise to their meaning, involving two kinds of semantic headedness—namely, endocentric compounds and exocentric compounds. These compound words can be identified in articles from the education issue of The Jakarta Post edition from April 2021. The objectives of this study are as follows: (1) to identify the types of compound words; (2) to determine the semantic headedness of compound words; and (3) to calculate the percentages of compound types and semantic headedness. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The results reveal three types of compound words: nominal compounds (656 words), verbal compounds (2 words), and adjectival compounds (5 words). Additionally, two types of compound words were identified—650 words were endocentric compounds, and 16 words were exocentric compounds. The percentages of compound word types were as follows: 98.5% nominal compounds, 0.3% verbal compounds, and 1.2% adjectival compounds. Meanwhile, the percentages of semantic headedness were 97.60% for endocentric compounds and 2.40% for exocentric compounds. This study provides valuable information about compound words in the context of language learning.
