Abstract

Primbon as Javanese local knowledge has been a guide for Javanese everyday and ritual life, included buildings, for decades. This paper intends to investigate the use of primbon in the Kraton Yogyakarta (Palace of Yogyakarta) as the representation of the sultan (king). The investigation was conducted through interpretive criticism to reveal the degree of conformity under the rules and principles in primbon as an attempt to form a new perspective in understanding the primbon. The analysis focuses on verses 172 and 194–196 of Primbon Betaljemur Adammakna, which deals with the arrangement of buildings. By transliterating the verses into English and interpreting the application of the verses in Kraton Yogyakarta, the study demonstrated the manifestation of the primbon verses in the kraton’s building arrangement. The study of primbon reveals the role of kraton as the representation of the earth in the universe, while the representation here displays the hierarchical arrangement of building facilities, from sacred to nonsacred or from private to public.

Abstract

This paper aims to show that for the safety of the occupants in today's architecture, we could learn from the spatial arrangement of the past architecture. In this paper, the adoption of the historiography method from historians was used to trace the genealogy of past architecture. Historiography is a method that is used to trace history back to the past to understand the past. By using historiography, the genealogy (line of a descendant) of vernacular Javanese building will be traced to find the transitional space in the spatial arrangement of the complex of housing. And then, the genealogy of vernacular Japanese buildings will be traced too, to find the transitional space in their spatial arrangement housing. To represent the European building, the genealogy of the Greek building will be used. Again, transitional space will be traced in their building. After that, the finding from these tracing will be compared to find the similarity and differences of the transition spaces. The result of this study showed that people from countries of samples did not design their building with open access to the spatial arrangement. There is always a transitional space from outside of the building to inside of the building. Because open access will make the occupants of the building prone to safety. Not only from tangible (physical) threats but also the intangible threats.

Abstract

Abstract

Government support for the discourse of creative space development has also increased. However, based on the results of direct observations and research through internet media by the author, it is known that not all Creative Hubs operate as expected. There is a Creative Hub that is "alive" or very crowded and used by creative actors well, but there is also a Creative Hub that is "dead" or empty of visitors. This study aims to analyze the facade applied to the case study object of the "Unicorn Creative Space" building, as well as to examine more deeply how to apply the right facade to the Creative hub building. The aspect of the facade that is observed refers to several relevant theories including the expression, components, and composition of the building facade. The method used is descriptive qualitative with field observations, interviews, and questionnaires to collect data, and analyze the data obtained and associated with relevant literature reviews. In this case, a building must have an attraction that makes the building crowded by the public. The facade is the most important element in architectural works because it is this element that is seen first. The facade plays a major role in attracting visitors so that the main goal of the Creative Hub development, namely business development and collaboration between creative actors, will be achieved. Based on the results of the study, it is known that the "Unicorn Creative Space" building applies a semi-open facade expression and has also applied several aspects of composition and components to the facade well, but there are several aspects that need to be considered so that the building's facade can be more attractive to visitors.

Abstract

Balai Pemuda is one of Surabaya's iconic buildings and is recognized as a cultural heritage site. Currently, it has been repurposed as a central public space for artistic and cultural activities, featuring galleries, a library, a multifunctional area, and complemented by common facilities, including a spacious open courtyard. In 2019, Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini transformed the youth center into one of Surabaya's landmarks. With these alterations and the introduction of new facilities, Balai Pemuda is classified as a public space, serving as a hub for social activities where the community can engage, socialize, and appreciate the arts and culture of Surabaya. This public space adopts the concept of a creative and cultural center, incorporating elements that represent art and culture within a centralized creative structure. The objective of this research is to assess the extent to which Balai Pemuda is categorized as a public space. The methodology employed is qualitative descriptive, utilizing library research as the research type. Survey techniques are based on secondary data obtained through the exploration of pertinent academic sources, followed by analysis and conclusions. The results of this research will indicate that Balai Pemuda is indeed a public space that effectively connects to the surrounding area and individuals. It functions as an effective public space based on the concept of a creative and cultural center.

Abstract

At this time the population is increasing, along with this the needs of society are also increasing. The community is starting to carry out various kinds of development to meet these needs, one of which is in the residential sector, namely apartments. Apartments are the choice of urban communities as a place to live because of their strategic location and offering various facilities. As a place to live, apartments need to prioritize comfort in order to improve the quality of life of their users. Bioclimatic architecture is a concept for creating a building that responds to the surrounding climate so that there is a balance between humans and the environment. The design principle of bioclimatic architecture is to prioritize climate adjustment to achieve energy efficiency and thermal comfort. This research examines the concept of bioclimatic architecture by taking the One East Surabaya Apartment as an object. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with secondary data collection through sources in the form of literature studies. The aim of this research is to identify and provide insight regarding the application of the concept of bioclimatic architecture based on aspects of the principles of bioclimatic architecture in apartment buildings. From the results of this research, it was found that the One East Surabaya Apartment has met bioclimatic building standards obtained from the transition space/balcony, relationship to the landscape, design on the walls and the use of passive shading tools.

Abstract

The application of local Indonesian culture in architectural design has become the main focus. This study aims to explore how local Indonesian culture is integrated into the architectural design of the Amanjiwo Hotel and Resort, located in Magelang Regency, Indonesia. The architectural design shows that Amanjiwo combines elements of local Indonesian culture, including art, traditional architecture and local philosophy, in its design. The concept of using local materials, the layout based on local traditions, and the integration of traditional art and ornaments all contribute to an atmosphere that enriches the guest experience. This research can provide a better understanding of the importance of accommodating local culture in the development of hospitality properties, not only as a decorative element, but also as a foundation for creating local identity and memorable experiences for guests. The results of this research are to strengthen awareness of cultural sustainability and the importance of paying attention to the local context in the development of the Amanjiwo Hotel and Resort. Future research could broaden this scope by comparing the application of local culture in architectural design. Maintaining the values found in the physical structure and outdoor space of the Amanjiwo Resort related to Javanese cultural and traditional architecture is the main focus.
