Abstract

Having background knowledge and past experiences of teaching, a teacher has been equipped with one of the sufficient and essential tools to ensure that his teaching process will be run as he plans. It is generally known as belief. Teaching English to learners as second or and foreign language means teaching the two most important aspects of the language that is vocabularies and grammar. This article deals with one of the aspects in teaching and learning English that is grammar which is of utmost significance in any languages. Teaching grammar means involving pedagogical theories to figure out the most adjustable teaching method to get the learners not only to view the syntactic structures of the target language but also to be aware of its importance and the way to learn it which later on is known as pedagogical grammar. The paper highlights teachers’ beliefs that influence their way of teaching in grammar reflected in their grammar instruction. Teaching experiences and some principles are put into a consideration to construct the beliefs contributing to teachers’ knowledge of pedagogical grammar instruction. Nevertheless, a teaching approach (Communicative Language Teaching/CLT) is required to be employed in order to ensure that the learners will be able to optimize their language competence by learning the grammar. Therefore, there is a big possibility ahead that teachers will be able to improve their own pedagogical grammar instruction by utilizing their teaching beliefs in their learners’ language acquisition process in teaching English as second and or foreign language.

Abstract

The absence of clear curriculum guidelines for ESP education in Indonesia, particularly at the university level, has prompted the need for a needs analysis from alumni, particularly in the field of accounting, as one of the important stakeholders in ESP curriculum design. Through a mixed approach with convergent design, data obtained from questionnaires and interviews involving 14 alumni, 5 instructors, and a head of the accounting department revealed that the alumni strongly require language proficiency and good language skills, with an equal percentage of 84.28%. This was followed by the desire for relevant vocabulary and suitable learning themes that align with their professional environments, with percentages of 78.57% and 77.16% respectively. In a nutshell, the alumni require specific language proficiency and skills in their respective fields, supported by adequate vocabulary and relevant learning themes as input in designing an ESP curriculum, especially in the field of accounting.

Abstract

This research helps determine the necessary requirements to strengthen a design of an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course in the context of English as a foreign language, particularly in Indonesia, especially despite its marginal status in higher education curricula by exploring EAP student needs, specifically in the Digital Business department at the Institute of Digital Business Technology Riau (ITBR). Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research utilizes questionnaires and an interview guide to gather data from students, the head, and English instructor in the department in order to identify student needs through 1) target situation analysis, 2) discourse analysis, 3) present situation analysis, 4) learner factor analysis, and 5) teaching factor analysis. The findings reveal that the last four aspects of the needs analysis are evenly distributed, showing a total percentage of 21% of the overall percentage students' needs, indicating that students require authentic materials for the development of their skills and language components, they need proficient language skills, they also require motivation, varied teaching methods and learning environments, and they need appropriate classroom management. In contrast, the target situation analysis accounts for 16% of the overall percentage, mainly due to the differing perceptions between students, department chairs, and teaching staff. In conclusion, students in the Digital Business department have specific needs accompanied by high motivation, which supports their attainment of good communication skills in their field, emphasizing the importance of aligning perceptions regarding the needs in developing an EAP course to achieve EAP learning objectives.

Abstract

One of the factors that generate lack of students’ writing competence is the teaching methods used by the lecturer which is less desirable by the students. Micro learning comes as one of the alternatives to deliver the knowledge to the students which became the focus of this study on seeing the significance of the strategy in improving students’ ability to write English text. This is an experimental research involving 64 participants which was done in Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Barat (UM Sumbar). The population of this study consisted of 124 students distributed across 4 classes. The sample selection was done using cluster random sampling, which resulted in one class being assigned as the experimental group and another class as the control group The data was gained by determining whether students have improved their writing scores (through writing rubric) by implementing micro teaching through pre-test and post-test. The researchers look for the statistical t-value with a significance level of <0.05. Furthermore, the researchers conduct further analysis through descriptive analysis using SPSS 24. The results of this research were obtained through a t-test with a significance level of 5% (0.05), yielding an observed t-value of 2.975, while the critical t-value was 2.306. These findings indicate that students' achievement in writing texts improved. Therefore, it can be concluded that micro-learning is an effective instructional method for enhancing the writing skills of English Education students at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Barat.

Abstract

Using social media in teaching listening requires creativity and modification in order to be suitable for learning. The aim of this research is to identify the learners' need for developing assisted-social media learning material in listening comprehension course at the Islamic University of Riau, Indonesia. The study involved undergraduate students taking listening comprehension subject who were selected through cluster random sampling. Along with the students, 5 lecturers were also involved. The instruments used in this study were questionnaire, interviews guide, and observation sheet. The questionnaire was centered on two main categories: Target need analysis and learning need analysis, drawing on the theoretical framework of Hutchinson and Waters (1987). Both analysis results revealed that the challenges faced by students while learning listening comprehension with the help of social media have a notable influence, mainly because of the discrepancy between the anticipated methods of learning and the actual internal factors that drive students to acquire effective listening skills. This situation is likely to contribute to the enhancement of their speaking abilities to meet their specific goals. As a result, meeting these goals requires additional support in terms of psychological, motivational, and material aspects. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights for designing and developing a tailor-made English learning material assisted by social media that meets the specific needs of the learners in the future particularly in listening comprehension course.
