Abstract

In recent years, Canada has become a global leader in refugees and the top world leader in refugee resettlement. Direct participation by civil society, mainly dominated by the religious congregation and faith-based organizations in resettlement, has been the hallmark of Canada's private sponsorship program and a significant element in its success.  This paper explores the evidence base of existing literature covering religious engagement within Canada's umbrella of refugee resettlement. Religious engagement is exemplified by the involvement of religious groups, congregations or communities in refugee resettlement which defines and shapes this policy, particularly in the private refugee sponsorship program.  Despite challenges shadowing the process, religious engagement contributes to more outcomes given its potential social capital. It is predicted that religious groups will continue to be leading actors within Canada’s resettlement programs.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims at documenting the experience and perceptions of an Indonesian university professor in regard to teaching using digital media during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Ample research has pointed out that the use of digital technologies can raise both potentials and challenges. This study examines the two contrasting perspectives by considering the current health disaster, the COVID-19 pandemic, which can add to the complexities of the virtual education in Indonesia. Research on virtual edu-cation in the context of Indonesian higher education during the pandemic is very limited and, thus, this study has gained its significance. We used qualitative methodology to approach this investigation with interview as the data collection technique and thematic analysis as its method of analysis.  The results of this study present some key insights into the ways to integrate digital technologies within higher education instruction and what criteria to consider when selecting digital media. We argue that using digital technolo-gy helped educators facilitate teaching and learning regardless of the health crisis they were facing. This paper can be of use for educators in higher education to find ways in infusing digital media in their everyday instructions.

Abstract

The Islamic revival movement is often considered a threat to other religious groups. Many studies on the issues have presented the dark sides of religion, wherein Islamic movements often turned into political ones leading to religion-based fundamentalism, violence, and terrorism. The current research explicates the process and characteristics of Islamism in a democratic climate by investigating a case of religious transformation in a traditional kampong formerly known for producing tuak in West Lombok. The Islamic movement, or to be precise, purification, is recently quite prevalent in the area. It relates to the early history of Islamization in Lombok, which pitted Islam against Hinduism and other local traditions. Such confluences generated rules and regional Islamic variants that are often considered heretic. Qualitative data for this study was gathered through observations, desk study, and interviews. This research found that the Islamization process observed in the tuak kampong displays unique characteristics different from those that commonly portray Islamic movements. Islamization in West Lombok was carried out without any commotion due to its non-coercive, outward-looking, and rational factors. These attributes are apparent in the three processes of transformation, the first is non-coercive cultural transformation through education and awareness, the second refers to structural change achieved through legal arrangement, and the third is rational transformation through community empowerment programs.

Abstract

This study aimed to introduce Nusantara culture based on educational games by adjusting students' learning styles. Culture as an ancestral heritage tradition needs to be preserved by introducing it to the younger gen-eration from an early age. However, the survey results found that less than 26% of student respondents un-derstood Nusantara culture well. Compared to previous research, the model of cultural introduction through adaptive educational games is more fun because it is adapted to the way students learn. This research was carried out using the Design-Based Research (DBR) method through 4 stages of the procedure. The feasibil-ity test and application effectiveness test were carried out on a group of students from several elementary schools in Indonesia, who were taken using a cluster random sampling technique. The results of media design and content validation obtained an average value of 0.76 and 0.82, which means that the media is declared valid. The feasibility test used the System Usability Scale (SUS) with an average value of 80% in the acceptable category. The results of the research obtained a description of the comparison of the final scores of the control class and the experimental class, which was 55 compared to 75. This study concluded that learning media for introducing Indonesian culture based on adaptive educational games had a positive impact by effectively increasing learning outcomes on students' understanding of Indonesian culture. Further development of this game application can be expanded in the application of animation in more depth.
