Abstract

This article aims at examining forms and characteristics of Turkish nationalism under Erdoganism, a relatively new term which has been devoted to leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The notion of nationalism has not been the main focus on the full range of the political rhetoric and the social interactions demonstrated by Erdogan. However, generally considered as a fundamental element in Turkey's social and political development, nationalism always remains a hot topic which cannot be separated from social dynamics and society itself. For this reason, nationalism will endlessly continue to look for a dynamic form and, at the same time, becomes an instrument of the ruling to control the distribution of power. Erdoganism itself has various distinct approaches towards the narrative and development of Turkish nationalism. This research used a qualitative approach with discourse analysis method by elaborating symbols, languages, writings, and speeches demonstrated by Erdogan in the political activities. The findings of this research are expected to be able to comprehend nationalism of Erdoganism.

Abstract This article discusses how youths adapt and challenge the social orders introduced by the COVID-19 protocol and other socio-cultural consequences. While maximizing social role and social status in society through durable processes, youths’ interpretation of the pandemic rules have created important discourses in the context of shaping new pandemic cultures. Having acknowledged as digital natives on the one hand, and agents of change on the other hand, youths have their own way of adapting and challenging the new cultures of a pandemic. By using a qualitative approach, primary data were collected through interviews with undergraduate students in Yogyakarta, and then supported by secondary data collected through observations, documents and news. The second is an accelerative way to the digital world giving youth a flash opportunity to take part in the social sphere. The pandemic has been accelerating the digital platforms and at the same time has forced youths to be able to use it. The third is cultural tensions inevitably arising due to the constant process of adaptation to the pandemic rules. Abstract

The essay is to examine a book entitled Imajinasi Sosiologi: Pembangunan Sosietal by underlining two significant elements to critically read and debate some problematic theories and other explanations. Firstly, concerning sociological theories and social theories in general in which the author paid attention; secondly, the author’s discipline of implementing the theories based on the data and contextual basis of Indonesian society. I am concerned a lot with the theoretical problems of the book and how the author explained sociological theories since they are used as a tool to analyse current topics particularly of ‘societal’ development (with an apostrophe to indicate a new term for Indonesian society of either academic or popular usage). Apart from many typos and lack of references, the review found at least two problems to argue: first is about conceptual and theoretical problems and lexical inconsistencies including the major theory of sociological imagination used as a title of the book, and second is a failure to exercise the care that reference and citation must be rigorously taken into consideration.

Abstract

In recent years, halal food and products have been expanding into the global economy, and today's halal market is estimated around USD 2.4 trillion globally. This article discusses the understanding and articulation of halalness and halal certification among non-Muslim business communities in Indonesia, focusing on owners of small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Their voices need to be heard and responded to, especially by government agencies. Since the non- Muslim communities’ understanding of halalness is mostly based on their life experiences, it could be treated as empirical data to inform policy-making. Meanwhile, the government has issued Halal Product Assurance (JPH) Law 33/2014, which mandated the establishment of the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH). The enforcement of JPH Law is an attempt to strengthen the BPJPH’s position, but it faces challenges and conflicts of interest in politics and business. Using a qualitative approach to collect data from non-Muslim SME business players in Yogyakarta and Semarang, this study found that the articulation and understanding of halalness are narrowly sectoral, religious, and ideological. Rather than halal certification, the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) has become a more trusted certification. Therefore, the presence of the state is needed to regulate and optimize the fundamental aspects of halal certification, such as hygiene, cleanliness, and health.

Abstract

Religious conflicts pose a threat to social integration, including those involving the Ahmadiyya Muslim community in Indonesia. This article discusses the post-conflict reconciliation and fulfillment of civil rights among Ahmadiyya adherents in Manislor, Kuningan, West Java, Indonesia. Social actors have a powerful position in the reconciliation and fulfillment of civil rights, which have become one of their most apparent violations against Ahmadiyya adherents in Manislor. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collected through fieldwork and ethnographic observations with Ahmadiyya adherents in Manislor. This article scrutinizes 1) the typologies of post-conflict reconciliation, 2) reconciliation efforts in the communities by leveraging cultural and religious aspects, and 3) the struggles of fulfilling civil rights, such as issuing marriage certificates and identification cards. The results show that the willingness of Ahmadiyya elites to meet with stakeholders and socio-religious organizations, particularly in Kuningan regency, created a space for a dialogue of understanding that helped the reconciliation between Ahmadiyya and the wider community in Manislor. This study contributes to clarifying the pattern of reconciliation based on the local approaches durably practiced by Ahmadiyya adherents in Manislor, Kuningan, West Java.

Abstract

This article analyzes how young women smokers defend themselves and perpetuate their smoking activity in an environment that rejects it through discursive understanding as the basis for their actions. In addition, this study discusses how women smoke and take into account smoking activity, social aspects, and physical aspects around it. The theoretical approach used is the agency theory of Anthony Giddens which deeply considers the aspects of managed reflexivity. This theory underlines that a continuous flow or stream of acts is inherently constructed by a process of rationalizing actions to underlie the agent's actions through reflexive monitoring. This study uses qualitative methods to obtain in-depth information from primary sources, namely smoking women in Yogyakarta. To support primary data, observation and documentation are used as secondary data sources. This article scrutinizes (1) women as social agents reflect the surrounding norms, smoking ethics, their body's acceptance of smoking, and their health risks, (2) women smokers rationalization their actions with a practical and discursive basis include the history of smoking women, gender equality, discourse on pharmaceutical interests, and culturally expressed self-freedom, and (3) smoking women are passive agents, namely agents who act within the limits of the structure but have power over themselves. to express themselves.

Abstract

This article discusses two elements of the evolution of Sufism amongst young urbanites. First, it explores the dynamics of the youths who are actively involved in spiritual activities at cafés, councils, and pesantren in Yogyakarta. Second, it investigates their response to the religious formalism promoted by Salafist organizations. Such spirituality offers a means of enriching religious perspectives and discourses. At the same time, urban Sufism (as promoted by zikir groups, prayer groups, and pesantren) has been challenged by Islamic organizations that adhere to doctrines of Salafism/Wahhabism and transnational Islamism. This study employs a qualitative approach by collecting its data through observations and interviews with urban Sufis in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. It finds that youths' opposition is not only to religious formalism produced by Salafists but also to formality and exclusivity known as brotherhoodism or tariqa (Sufi order) from Sufi itself. Their strict opposition to the dualism of religious formality provides them with an important means of critiquing the dominant strains of tasawwuf and religious schools (tariqa) while offering new religious dynamics.
