Abstract

Being a secular state after centuries under the Islamic sultanate of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey has been challenged by various internal political turmoil and controversies over religion and its relation to the state. As such, fierce debate has become unavoidable for Islamist and revivalist groups that feel discriminated against for practicing Islam in public spaces. This article discusses Salafism and Wahabism in contemporary Turkey, starting from its inception to its da'wah and development strategies in society. The article used a qualitative approach with a literature review. The data was collected from secondary sources, including research results by scholars and various pieces of information in the mass media that emerged during the era of Recep Tayyip Erdogan until 2022. This article scrutinizes (1) the history of the resurgence of Salafism and Wahabism in Turkey due to the influence of the social and political situation; (2) pro-Islamic political policies in the government providing an opportunity for Salafi and Wahabi to develop in Turkey; and (3) the form and strategy of a pro-active and non-confrontational Salafi group in Turkey. This third part is very urgent for this article because it relates to secular Turkey's social, political, and cultural contexts.

Abstract

Memes have become an important medium for expressing multiple intentions on the internet. Social media has advanced increasingly, making memes a contestation zone, an active hook for delivering information, and an expression of counterradicalism. Memes are a very effective way to take a jab at radicalism in a laid-back or even humorous manner so the public can refreshingly capture the messages. As a part of the digital way, the counterradical group also benefits from the same medium and feature. This research aims to investigate the data on the field on how the memes spreading on social media fight against radicalism in their ways. Therefore, the antiradicalism movement through memes is conducted to look for the patterns, forms, and meanings, especially on X and Instagram accounts of NU Garis Lucu (NUGL) and Muhammadiyah Garis Lucu (MuGL). Using a qualitative approach with the content analysis method, the memes posted in the two accounts were collected between August and December 2022. We found that NUGL and MuGL are actively plotting the antiradicalism movement by criticizing radicalism and fighting against religious indoctrination. Apart from that, for those two accounts, memes function as a medium to raise awareness on multiculturalism and nurture nationalism.

Abstract

The social dynamics occurring within an organization can reflect many things such as balance, integration, conflict, and even the pattern and form of the organization itself. This article discusses the social processes and interactions that emerge in the student organization of the Muhammadiyah Student Association (IPM) of the Special Region of Yogyakarta in dealing with internal and external challenges and dynamics to build balance. These things are important as a learning process for students and to integrate mutual support among students and its member. Using a qualitative approach, this article researched the subject of the IPM at the Regional level with informants consisting of administrators. The article found two important things related to the pattern and form of social processes carried out by internal actors of the organization, such as (1) the role of actors who can understand the internal and external situations of the organization so that they can understand the dynamics of the organization; and (2) the intensity of communication and meetings is a fantastic way to maintain the internal IPM’s system so that it can be maintained to solve challenges and problems within internal organization. These two things are strengthened by the process of adaptation and integration that are approached formally and informally in the social process in IPM.
