Abstract

ABSTRACT: In the current globalization era, we witness quick changes in all sectors of life, and for the society which is conscious of these changes the mastery of science and technology has become a must. The areas of science and technology chosen are certainly the ones commonly perceived to provide real contribution to the struggle with the changes. With reference to the science of history, the big question which arises is: is the science of history still needed in this globalization era considering most of its objects belong to the past? One of the answers to the question is in order to contextualize the values of history education an alternative in the teaching of history should be generated in the hope that future generation will be aware of the social values for the basis of predicting the future. Hence, learning history means understanding the past for better understanding of the current so that the future can be grabbed much better.KEY WORDS: current globalization, science and technology, science of history, future generation and understanding the past for better understanding of the current.About the Author: Dr. Tanto Sukardi, M.Hum. is a Lecturer at the Department of History Education, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training (FKIP) Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto (UMP) in Central Java, Indonesia. Abstract

The aim of the research is to study the form of Tareqat Akmaliyah movement in Banyumas Residency, Central Java, as the effect of the cultivation system applied in this area. The method used in this study is qualitative one, especially which is usually practiced in historical research, such as heuristics, critics, interpretation and explanation. In practice the cultivation system took a long time to grow and cultivate the plantation; hence the workers had little or no time at all to work at their own soil. Consequently, their families suffered a lot as their sawah or fields laid bare without producing food for their daily needs. In the long run, as these conditions getting worst, the families endured malnutrition, hunger, and high rate of mortality. Poverty forced these peasants and their families to make up and adjust new actions, attitudes, habits, and traditions as forms of self-defence mechanism to survive from the threat of oppression and exploitation. As one form their resistance against the cultivation system was social upheaval in the form of social moverment such as messianic movement.

Abstract

The reconstruction of social economic history in Banyumas in 1830-1900, has purpose to study the various factors which affect the social change in that region. This research uses theoretical frame, connected with the social change theory and the applicable method of history research through multidimensional approach, which related to the social and economic aspect. The historic research may be stated that the implementation of cultuurstelsel (enforcement planting or cultivation system) is the collaboration between West capitalism system with the traditional-feudalistic economy system, in order to exploitate the land and the workforce of the resident. The changes can be sectorial and partial, slow and non-comprehensive. In economic sector, the change is the distribution of money economy, which marked with the economy activities and the establishment of economy institution such as the credit service institution. While in the social sector, there is no new formation of social institution. However, some function dislocations in the society occur.
