Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to present a typology of Pesantren in the current modern era based on the basic ideas of each Pesantren. This study is essential as part of efforts to dynamize the development of Pondok Pesantren in Indonesia. Design/methods/approach – Descriptive qualitative study is the method used in this research. The informants in this study are the leaders of Islamic boarding schools across Java. The data collection process uses in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. The data analysis process is based on Milles Huberman’s data analysis. Findings – The typology formed from the results of observations is that there are three Pesantren, namely the first Pesantren, which remains restraining learning and preserves the classical Islamic inheritance with all educational instruments. Second, Pondok Pesantren accommodates the two mainstreams of thought, the social modernity and the social-humanity tradition, by founding official/formal schools or education and combining two intellectual traditions between Islamic tradition and Western tradition. Third, Pondok Pesantren developed the learning towards religious books or Kitab Kuning beyond the initial basis of the madhab era (The era of the school of scientific thought about Muslim laws). Research implications/limitations – this research has implications for developing the broader characteristics of Islamic boarding schools. In addition, a complete understanding of the Islamic Boarding School was obtained. This study has limitations in the aspects observed. This study only observes the type of Islamic Boarding School typology seen from the form of educational thought that is developed. Practical implications – This study provides a newer perspective regarding the typology of developing Pesantren and explains the importance of the role of Pesantren in the discourse of Islamic education in Indonesia.

Abstract

The inevitable rise of modernity means that clerics will lose their role and will no longer be autonomous. Nevertheless, as a new way to maintain their position in society and strengthen their authority, it is not uncommon for them (ulama) to use technological advances to record fatwas and advice delivered to the public. This study examines several fundamental issues concerning how Ali Jum`ah and Yusuf al-Qaradhawi build their religious authority through new media, and to what extent new media plays a role in increasing their religious authority. This research found the way the two figures built their religious authority through new media. Ali Jum`ah built his religious authority through new media when he led Dar al-Ifta. He turned Dar al-Ifta into a modern global institution based on new media. Meanwhile, al-Qaradhawi built his religious authority through new media by cooperating with experts and various professionals in the field of media, one of them being through the Qatar-based al-Jazeera TV channel. The power and role of new media utilized by the two figures were able to mobilize an unprecedented number of people, thus strengthening their authority. This research contributes to producing new knowledge about the emergence of Islamic public space through the presence of new media in the Islamic world as an effort to stimulate and expand the movement of ijtihad that is more responsible and more effective in this contemporary era.

Abstract

Traditionalists have strongly criticized that the ambition to refer to the Qur’an and sunnah led Salafis to disconnect the intellectual network (isnad) of Islam from the prophet Muhammad. However, a meticulous reading demonstrates that Salafis are far from ignoring the Islamic intellectual heritage of the past produced after the periods of three early generations of Islam (al-salaf). This can be seen in the Salafi scholarly production by editing (tahqiq) and publishing classical Islamic texts. This article is to study Mufradat Alfaz Al-Qur’an (MAQ) by ar-Ragib al-Asfihaniy (d. 1108) edited by Mustafa al-’Adawiy. It aims to elaborate on how Salafi scholarly production has been developed. Methodologically, it utilizes Gerard Genette’s paratextual model. It is argued that the editing of MAQ by al-’Adawiy is an attempt to claim the connection of Salafi Islam with the Islamic intellectual tradition in the past. Moreover, al-’Adawiy’s editing generates a typically Salafi-oriented interpretation, which corrects previous interpretations. This is a kind of “politics of editing.”

Abstract

Salafis are known for their strong commitment to practicing Islam as literally as possible in accordance with the understanding of the Salaf (pious forefathers) generation in their daily life. Despite their claim to the purity of their Islamic interpretation, Salafism is historically constructed. This article deals with the taḥqīq (editing) of Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn endeavored by a renowned Salafi scholar, Nāṣir al-Dīn Al-Albānī. It aims to demonstrate how Salafism has been constructed. In doing so, it tries to detail how Salafism has become increasingly mainstreamed, a process we might call “Salafization”. This article argues that Al-Albānī did “Salafization” of Islamic intellectual tradition through taḥqīq. Using Gérard Genette’s paratextual analysis, this article unveils practices and discourses surrounding Al-Albānī’s textual editing. These practices and discourses were guided by his Salafi ideology. In his edition of Riyāḍ al-Ṣāliḥīn, there are three examples where Al-Albānī corrected popular Islamic understanding, including the relationship between intention (nīyah) and action (ʿamal), asmāʾ wa ṣifāt, and traditional religious practices and rituals.

The author will attempt to discuss these indications and link them to the pesantren environment. The author will also shed light on some discourses related to Islamic reforms stimulated by the Javanese ulama (religious scholars) in Mecca and how they influenced the construction of pesantren ideology. The author will end this article with a case study of Shaykh 'Abd al-Hamid Kudus. This study is meant to portray the intellectual career of a Javanese teacher at the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca.DOI: 10.15408/sdi.v15i3.526

Abstract

This article deals with the Qur’ānic interpretation offered by Majelis Tafsir Al-Qur’ān (MTA). It tries to answer several questions: to what extent MTA has interpreted the Qur’ān, how it fits (or does not fit) with its ambitious claim that it does not offer any kind of Qur’ānic interpretation, and how this interpretation demonstrates the development of MTA’s thought in understanding the Qur’ān. This article reaches the conclusion that, although MTA claims not to interpret the Qur’ān, in fact it has made such a certain degree of interpretation of the Qur’ān. Its puritan ideology seems to have played a considerable role in colouring its Qur’ānic understanding. As a result, the claim that it does not interpret the Qur’ānis not reliable and even tendentious.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i2.896
