Abstract

This paper gives a new perspective about pesantren (Islamic boarding school) as the source of peace education in Indonesia using three concepts; First is a collective opinion that reflected in the UN Declaration of Culture of Peace, second is the definition of peace education based on peace and conflict resolution studies, and third is the historical side of Islam in Indonesia. To explain the main idea about pesantren as the source of peace education, this paper uses the qualitative method in analyzing the data from interviews in some pesantren in Madura Island in 2014. This paper constructs a hypothesis that pesantren is the unique source and very potential for creating Indonesian peace leaders in the future. This idea is simply coming from a common sense that Muslims majority in Indonesia send their children to the pesantren to have a good education and good manner as well. But on the other side, some pesantren precisely create some radicals, so I would like to uphold this issue by telling the Union European historical experience to handle radicalizes through peace education by harmonizing state-religion relationship.

Abstract

Ontologically, Muhammadiyah is not only a foundation, but an idea of ??a modern Islamic movement and a respected Islamic community in Indonesia. Epistemologically, Muhammadiyah's modern Islamic thought is manifested in the field of education, by including the national curriculum. Then axiologically, Muhammadiyah not only educates Muslims, but also internalizes aspects of peace and progress for the entire Indonesian nation, so that a Muhammadiyah cadre is expected to become a form of peace itself. This article will describe in more depth Muhammadiyah as a modern educational institution. To analyze this, this paper uses Syeikh Muhammad Abduh's modern Islamic thinking and Muhammadiyah's unique values. The research was conducted using qualitative research methods through literature study. The research findings are about the relationship between Muhammad Abduh's ideas of Islamic modernism which influenced K.H. Ahmad Dahlan to form Muhammadiyah, and how these ideas will continue to be updated along with the times. This paper is expected to add to the wealth of insights about Muhammadiyah and can be a reference for further research for cadres of teachers and lecturers in the academic environment of Prof. Dr. HAMKA (UHAMKA). Abstract

The research is a derivative program of the Defense Heritage Dissertation by Dr. Jeanne Francoise, with a novelty idea, namely the establishment of the Indonesian Defense Museum. The establishment of the Indonesian Defense Museum aims to narrate the history of Indonesia's national defense in a complete, unified, and comprehensive manner with exhibitions of historical artifacts or objects, sequences of events, involvement of actors, and narratives based on the period of the defense heritage of the Indonesian nation, from 1511 to 1949. This study uses qualitative research methods with analysis obtained from the enrichment of defense heritage theory, cultural diplomacy, defense science, humanities, and museum science, as well as the Focus Group Discussion in Republic of Indonesia’s National Defence Council (WANTANNAS RI) in July 2022. It is hoped that this research can become the main blueprint for the establishment of the Indonesian Defense Museum one day, especially in terms of presenting historical stories in a more interesting and contemporary way, as well as preparing digital literacy to store their collections so that they can continue to be accessed by the public and provide benefits in the academic field.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the background of Islamic tourism in Indonesia using the concept of Islamic tourism by Din (1989) and to analyze the development of halal tourism, it uses the halal concept by Liu et al. (2018). The paper looks at how the Indonesian government managed to enter the  list of top ten global halal tourism destinations in 2018, got on top in 2019, only to slip several notches below due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also looks at how, by involving non-state actors such as those in the fashion and culinary industries, Indonesia has managed to climb back on top in 2023. Last but least, the paper also gives recommendations on what the government should do to maintain Indonesia’s number one position in halal tourism.    Keywords: Indonesia; halal tourism; Islamic heritage; travel; Muslim fashion
