Abstract

Speaking is one of the four macro skills of English. It is also a productive skill that requires language learners to gain much exposure to use it. Accuracy and fluency are two elements to be used as parameters of speaking ability for foreign language learners. Apart from this, language learners still find it hard to express out their speaking ability in front of classroom as well as outside the class. Lack of self confidence, limited vocabulary acquisition, and English grammar have become obstacles for learners to develop their speaking ability. Through this hands-on workshop, we introduced three educational games, namely, hot seat, comic strip, and that’s an unusual view to students and teachers at panti Asuhan Sentosa Banjarmasin. These games are intended to make learning english more fun, to help students gain self confidence to use the language, and to boost cooperative work between students and teachers. The participants responded positively to the ideas and they would use those games as learning media.

Abstract

Nowadays, the task of a teacher is not just to teach and evaluate learning outcomes. However, an ideal teacher is those who are able to document and disseminate what occurs in their classroom into a scientific paper or a scientific book. Writing a scientific work is not as easy as writing a short story or novel. There are rules that need to be paid attention by the author, one of them is the rules in citing other works and experts’ opinions. Many scientific papers have been rejected by journal editors because of the citations that do not meet the required author guidelines. To tackle this issue, we conducted a one day training on the use of software reference called “Mendeley” for Senior High School teachers in Barito Kuala Regency. After the training, the participants were able to use Mendeley independently. Even, there was a teacher who succeeded in publishing his scientific article in an online scientific journal.

Abstract

The alumni of Vocational Schools (VS) have contributed to the increasing number of unemployment recently. At the onset, the main objective of vocational education is to produce ready to work alumni. However,  the more the schools produce alumni, the higher the number of jobless people in this country. To tackle the issue,  the government launch revitalization programs for VS’s across Indonesia. The implementation of the program is intended to cut down the number of unemployment and poverty. To explore the implementation of the program within a vocational context, this study was undertaken to look at the understanding of VS principals about the revitalization programs as well as the ten core strategies of the program. Besides, the study was also conducted to explore the problems faced the principals and their expectations of the revitalization program. A qualitative phenomenology study using in-depth interviews were conducted to garner the data from nine school principals of private and public VS’s in South Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. The findings indicate that the improvement of the competency of certified teachers is essential. Furthermore, the availability of business and industrial based (DUDI) facilities and learning resources, as well as the availability of professional development training through a link and match programs, are also important. On the other hand, the establishment of Management Information System (SIM) based on School Automation System (SAS), industry-based curriculum, teaching factory, tutorial video, local wisdom, and the role of VS as the triggers of the local economy needs more socialization by the government.

Abstract

Nursing English is one of the branches of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) that require the instructors to take into account specific students’ learning needs. This is a Research and Development aimed: (1) to know the problems which are faced by the nursing students in studying English, (2) to develop nursing English materials by using simulation technique. There were 58 nurse students of the sixth semester at a private university in Indonesia invited to participate in the study. The data were garnered through questionnaires. Interviews were also conducted with students, teachers and subject specialist teachers. To enrich the data focus group discussions were carried out. The findings indicated that students’ speaking skill increased even though this method seemed challenging to them. Subject specialist teachers were familiar with this teaching technique since in the nursing field almost all the subjects need a simulation. This research contributes to the TESOL methodology and future research may expand the findings from another perspective.

Abstract

Media, such as newspapers, take their role in shaping public opinions by positioning the readers, either to favor or disfavor with specific issues. Even though the sources are the same, the news item may be presented differently. This is because the news reportings are socially, economically, and politically conditioned, thus news is always broadcasted from a particular point of view. An attributed source is just one of the ways journalists work to implicitly position the audiences’ inferences whether they want toalign or disalign the audiences with their attitudinal position. To understand this attitudinal positioning in journalistic commentary, the current study identifies and describes the evaluative workings of excerpts of three different newspapers which are called The Guardian Australia, The Jakarta Post (English printed Indonesian local newspaper, and Daily Mail Australia, regarding the Australian Government’s responses to the death penalty for the “Duo Bali Nine” in 2015. System of Appraisal is used as the framework to help understand how reporters’ voices, in particular, position readers to support particular attitudes and viewpoints, and hold particular beliefs or assumptions about something. The findings indicate that the three newspapers used affective evaluation at the most although each has different way of amplifying the issues.
