The data of this study are gathered and selected from several literatures of Banjarese which are then analyzed using critical linguistics.  The results of this study show that the parts which contain the wisdom values of the Banjarese people are the clues of interpretation. The wisdom values are also related to the good and the bad behaviours of Banjarese people. It is also found that Islam, as the religion followed by the majority of the Banjarese people, influences the Banjarese culture and Banjarese proverbs.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the four macro skills of English. It is also a productive skill that requires language learners to gain much exposure to use it. Accuracy and fluency are two elements to be used as parameters of speaking ability for foreign language learners. Apart from this, language learners still find it hard to express out their speaking ability in front of classroom as well as outside the class. Lack of self confidence, limited vocabulary acquisition, and English grammar have become obstacles for learners to develop their speaking ability. Through this hands-on workshop, we introduced three educational games, namely, hot seat, comic strip, and that’s an unusual view to students and teachers at panti Asuhan Sentosa Banjarmasin. These games are intended to make learning english more fun, to help students gain self confidence to use the language, and to boost cooperative work between students and teachers. The participants responded positively to the ideas and they would use those games as learning media.

Abstract

Speaking skills mastery is often perceived as a parameter of success in language learning. Following this situation, numerous studies and practices related to teaching speaking are continuously conducted in an attempt to best facilitate learners in developing their speaking skills. However, it catches our attention when one of our students can outperform others in speaking. This situation yields a question, “What makes him so different from the other students?”. As an attempt to elicit information about his English learning experience and strategy, especially in developing his English-speaking skills, we decided to conduct a Narrative Inquiry Research. Our research, therefore, addresses the following questions: (i) How is the advanced user’s perception of language learning? and (ii) How did the advanced user build the strategy to speak English fluently? The result of interview revealed that extramural English and some affective factors contribute to his English fluency. Investigating this phenomenon gives us insightful information, especially for language learners who want to be successful in language learning. The finding of this study is also expected to help teachers in their instructional design and practice.
