Abstract

A learning culture is needed to facilitate the process of learning English for students and to increase student motivation in learning language (Kim, 2020). This research paper aim to examine and describe Indonesian EFL university students’ motivation whether integrative or instrumental in learning English as foreign language. The method used was quantitative by randomly asking the students  enrolled in undergraduate study program of English Literature in one of the Indonesian universities to fill out a questionnaire adapted from Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) that was developed by R.C. Gardner (1985). The questionnaire was administered to students who come from 2017 generations to 2020 generations. Moreover, this study also examine whether the differences existed in motivation between old students and new students. The data collected were analyzed by using SPSS program to find out the mean score and standard deviation as to answer the questions of this study. The results indicated that students’ motivation in learning English was more highly instrumental than integrative. This study also revealed that new students had more instrumental motivation and old students had more integrative motivation. Based on the findings, lecturers are expected to improve their way of learning for enhancement the students’ motivation. Learning culture developed should take into account and maintain the motivation of students in language learning.

Abstract

Microbial contamination and fat oxidation may cause physical and chemical changes that can reduce the quality of broiler meat. The objective of this study was to determine the ability of casein chitosan edible coatings in maintaining the quality of broiler meat stored in certain storage time under refrigeration (8 oC), in terms of water activity (Aw), cooking loss, organoleptic properties (i.e. color, aroma and possible deviations), physicochemical properties (i.e. moisture content, water holding capacity/WHC, pH, lipid content, color), Total Plate Count (TPC), and microbial properties (i.e. Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Salmonella sp.). The materials used were broiler breast fillets and casein chitosan edible coating. The research was conducted using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) based on 5 variations in storage time treatments i.e. at 0 h; 24 h; 72 h; 120 h; and 168 h in 4 replications. Edible coating casein chitosan on broiler meat under storage showed significant on Aw, WHC, pH, lightness, TPC, S. aureus, and E. coli. The application of casein-chitosan as an edible coating could be suitable to assure the safety of food products such as chicken meat at the range of storage time studied.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate and describe the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of tertiary-level EFL students in Indonesia toward reading English. The quantitative method was applied by asking students majoring in English at Brawijaya University to fill out a questionnaire adapted from Wigfield and Guthrie's Motivation for Reading Questionnaire (MRQ) (1997). The questionnaire was administered to students from 2018 generations to 2020 generations. Besides that, students’ self-assessment reading value used to measure students’ reading proficiency. In addition, this study also examined the correlation between students' reading motivation and their reading ability. The data collected were analyzed using the SPSS program with descriptive statistics to answer research question 1 and Pearson correlation analysis to answer research question 2. The results indicated that students are relative highly extrinsic motivated in reading English. Meanwhile, intrinsic motivation was found to have a significant correlation and extrinsic motivation was found to have a negative correlation with students' reading. Based on these findings, lecturers are expected to increase students' intrinsic motivation to read.
