Abstract

This research aims to analyze the acculturation of traditional marriage practices within the Tengger community, specifically investigating whether there has been a shift in customary marriage procedures following the introduction of Hinduism. To address this research question, the researcher collected data on two key traditional marriage ceremonies: Walagara and Pewawihan. In Tengger custom, these ceremonies are essential for validating a marriage. Without them, the marriage is neither recognized nor legalized according to customary law. This raises a significant inquiry on whether Walagara and Pewawihan are purely traditional customs or have been acculturated with Hindu values. The findings indicate that while Walagara and Pewawihan remain part of Tengger's heritage, their implementation has changed. Specifically, the prayers recited during these ceremonies now incorporate Hindu elements. The researcher concludes that Walagara and Pewawihan consist of two distinct components: the ritual movements, which align with Tengger custom, and the prayers, which reflect Hindu influences.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to discuss the thoughts of Jalaluddin Rakhmat. This article focuses on discussing Jalaludin Rakhmat's views on the idea of ethics and his Sufi views. Jalaluddin Rakhmat's anxiety arose from seeing the phenomenon of piety being measured by fiqh rather than by ethics. As an urban Sufi figure, he offers a new paradigm in understanding Islamic doctrine. Avoiding evil is the initial foundation of piety, and worship is the second foundation. This research is library research using the content analysis method. The study results show that Jalaluddin Rakhmat's ethical concept is more on religious ethics, where the Quran, Sunnah, and ushul fiqh are the sources. In contrast, his Sufism thoughts are more on moral Sufism thoughts. These two sciences are the foundation for the birth of Sufi ethical thoughts.

Abstract

Information overload is more extensive in this digital era, allowing any information to bombard anyone, anytime, and anywhere. Social media algorithms can no longer contain the content that will be consumed by the public. However, they can curate content based on user preferences. Users have limited control over preventing this, including being warned about the presence of radical content. Despite that, the spread of radical content is not only done massively through the internet but can also occur in Islamic study forums. Forums that contain radical movements are widespread within Islam, happening anywhere. Therefore, it is important for society to be aware of the radicalism that threatens the values of Islamic teachings and the principles of Ahlul Sunnah wal Jamaah. One way to counteract radicalism is by sharpening critical thinking and enriching knowledge and literacy. The dissemination of knowledge can be carried out in various forums, including within mosques. Mosques themselves have many functions beyond being places of worship. Understanding these functions and maximizing them is key to addressing the spread of radicalism

Abstract

Historically, the Tengger community is known as a tribal society that maintained the religion of their ancestors as a singular belief system. It was only after the post-Reformation era in 1998 that Hinduism and Islam became the predominant religions adopted by the Tengger people. More than 25 years after the Reformation, amid religious conflicts across several regions of Indonesia, the Tengger community continues to prioritize harmony within a framework of pluralism and tolerance. This study examines the relationships among Islam, Hinduism, and Tengger custom to understand how the Tengger people maintain social harmony and identify the dominant factors that shape and sustain harmony within a plural society. The research employed a field-based approach, conducted directly within the natural context of the subjects, to obtain empirical data relevant to real-world phenomena. This approach enables an in-depth analysis of behaviors, conditions, and social interactions. The results of this study indicate a collaborative relationship among Islam, Hinduism, and local cultural practices, in which both religions complement each other without abandoning substantive elements. Harmony is maintained through customary ceremonies in which adherents of all religions participate collectively to preserve traditional rituals. The dominant role in sustaining social harmony within the Tengger community is held by adat functionaries (adat judges, adat chiefs, and Wali Tanah), whose authority is directly recognized by the community, making their decisions binding and respected by the Tengger people.
