Abstract

The community project to plan mangrove in downstream of Opak-OyaRiver has attracted the growingof various socio-economic activities. The objective of the research is to calculate the total economicvalues of mangrove ecosystem. The study was conducted in BarosBantul Regency on September toOctober 2013. The numbers of 41 farmers, 10 fishers, 9 cattlemans and 34 tourists were interviewed tofind out the economic values of mangrove ecosystem. The study indicated the total economic benefits ofmangrove area was IDR168.744.141,67/ha/year, which consist of IDR19.756.491,67/ha/year for directbenefits, IDR132.017.160,00/ha/year for indirect benefits, IDR170.490,00/ha/year for optional benefitsand IDR16.800.000,00/ha/year for existence benefits. The indirect economic benefit of mangrove areawas higher. It shows that ecological functions of mangrove played a greater benefits and the action toconserve and expand the mangrove area are extremely needed. The sustainability of the mangrove andmanagement based on ecology might remain as appropriate way to do in the futur

Abstract

A coral reef ecosystem is home to thousands of marine species and is utilised for feeding, reproduction and as a nursery ground. Coral reefs are areas of high biodiversity, and typically fish diversity and density are positively correlated with a living coral cover. Hence any threat to the coral ecosystem is also likely to have an impact on a high number of other species and may alter an environmental landscape. For instance, the decline of the coral population may reduce fish’s abundance and increase shoreline erosion. Contributions to the decline of coral reefs ecosystem from physical, chemical and biological sources such as increasing water temperatures (due to climate change), pollution, human disturbance and coral diseases. Therefore, it is important to understand factors which are related to the resistance and resilience of coral reef ecosystem. This review aims to broaden our understanding of coral reef resistance and resilience in the Indo-Pacific region by taking a genetic perspective. There are four primary aspects that are essential for coral resistance and resilience which will be reviewed here; the ability to respond to disturbance, the ability to adapt to the changing climate, the connectivity between coral populations (linked to larval dispersal), and the application of genetics to support coral reef conservation and management project. This paper is important to support our understanding of coral’s adaptability and resistance in facing disturbances such as climate change. Furthermore, it may benefit future conservation projects, as it explains genetic attributes that need to be considered for conservation and management projects such as local genetic diversity. Keywords: coral reef, conservation, genetic and population

Abstract

Coastal areas provide great benefits for human lives. In many isolated islands, coastal ecosystem provides food and building materials extracted from coastal vegetation e.g. mangroves. Therefore, it is essential to ensure the sustainability of the coastal ecosystem. This study provides data and a map in supporting the coastal ecoregion management, by using remote sensing satellite imagery, GIS technology, and field observation. Remote sensing and GIS data were obtained from Google Earth and analysed by ArcGIS. The combination of both laboratory and field work were carried out to provide a broad picture of the coastal area in Jefman Island, Raja Ampat, West Papua. The result of this study showed various habitats and vegetation in the Jefman seabed area. It also demonstrates that the abundance and diversity of coral reef and reef fishes are the major community constructing the island, amounting 22% coral cover with 12 families and diversity index 1.20 – 2.52 for reef fish with fish density about 231 ind/50 m2. Furthermore, other communities such as seagrass, seaweed, and mangrove are also briefly explained, as they also play a greater role in supporting the whole coastal ecological system. Based on map data analysis, we found a particular area that urgently needs to be protected. Remote sensing and GIS technology were found useful to help the manager to design coastal management strategies in the future.
