Abstract

Ecological wisdom has become an emerging field in the context of landscape planning and design practices for achieving sustainability and resilience. Several scholars have published empirical research papers in this field, and some have also conducted reviews to explore its concept and framework. However, since the empirical research varies, no study has made a systematic literature review and thus encountered difficulties in determining the research topic and problem. Moreover, the research approach and data analysis method could differ based on study site characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to identify and analyze the research topic and problem discussed, site characteristics, and methodology of ecological wisdom studies from 2012 to 2021 by conducting systematic literature reviews involving descriptive analysis, and thematic analysis. The analysis of selected primary studies revealed that recent ecological wisdom studies focus on four topics: exploration, in-depth concept, method introduction, and evidence-based study. Most of the problems discussed in primary studies have focused on acquiring and applying ecological wisdom in practice for contemporary planning and design related to landscape sustainability and resiliency. The characteristics of the study sites were grouped into four categories: sites with unique landscape features, historical or preserved sites, sites with environmental problems or limitations, and sites with high biodiversity. The research methodology developed in ecological wisdom studies uses one or a combination of qualitative, quantitative, and/or spatial approaches involving field measurements and spatial modelling. Finally, the contribution, limitation, and opportunities for future improvements.

Abstract

Air pollution, especially in big cities in Indonesia, has reached a very worrying level. The main sources of air pollution come from various human activities, including industry, transportation, offices, and housing. These various activities are the biggest contribution of air pollutants that are released into the free air. In this study, observations and measurements of air pollution levels were carried out in the Final Disposal Site (FDS). The absence of good waste management in Sinjai Regency has triggered the community to manage waste by means of Open Dumping, where waste is simply dumped in a landfill without any treatment. Pollutant gas originating from the landfill will produce harmful gases, including Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and others. This study aims to determine the concentrations of Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) in Final Disposal Site (FDS) Tondong and in residential areas around Tondong FDS, Sinjai Regency by using the passive sampler method. The test results obtained are the NO2 value at point 1 which is 3.69 g/m3, point 2 is 5.25 g/m3, point 3 is 3.1 g/m3 and point 4 is 7.1 g/m3 with an average value The average NO2 parameter test is 4.785 g/m3. While the SO2 value at point 1 is 4.46 g/m3, point 2 is 7.34 g/m3, point 3 is 8.47 g/m3 and point 4 is 5.93 g/m3. The average value of the SO2 parameter test is 6.55 g/m3. Calculating the Air Quality Index based on the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia Number 27 of 2021 concerning the Environmental Quality Index, air pollution at the Tondong Landfill is worth 93.14 indicating the very good category.

Abstract

Studies on green open space and ecological wisdom have developed over time and are linked to various subjects and impacts. However, both research subjects have developed somewhat independently despite their approaches often achieving a sustainable landscape. This paper proposed a bibliometric analysis of green open space and ecological wisdom research to identify the trends and hot topics on both aspects, then determine a potential topic for future research relating to both subject areas. We collected English research papers from the last decades from the Scopus database using appropriate keywords and analyzed the metadata using VOSviewer program. Then, the text data were extracted from the title and abstract of the document collections using VOSviewer built-in text mining function. The hot topic term was analyzed by calculating the score of the average citation based on their occurrences. Finally, potential research in green open space and ecological wisdom field was determined by overlaying the findings and catching the slice. A total of 283 document collections were analyzed and 75 most relevant terms were found. All the terms were divided into four clusters as a research field: urban green space cluster, environmental quality cluster, sustainable planning cluster, and landscape development cluster. Further, the hot topic analysis found ten keywords that had a high citation impact in document collection and mostly came from a sustainable planning cluster. After overlaying the findings, six terms emerged that have a high potential for future research because of their high citation impact for science.

Abstract

Traditional settlements play a crucial role in shaping and preserving the unique identities of communities functioning as a repository of cultural heritage and historical significance, thus contributing greatly to the collective identity of a population. Such settlements are prevalent in Indonesia, including the Gayo indigenous community. This study aims to identify and analyze landscape characters and models of traditional Gayo settlements. The research was conducted in Toweren Uken, Central Aceh Regency, Aceh Province. This research was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method, with research stages including tracing customary scripts, interviewing cultural figures, and field observation. Content analysis is conducted on literature related to the elements that shape settlement landscapes, while spatial analysis carried out after field observations are completed. The landscape characteristics of traditional Gayo settlements show hilly terrain with land cover dominated by agricultural fields, with settlements located surrounded by agricultural fields and hills. Natural elements identified within the town include Lake Lut Tawar, mountains, hills, and rivers. Man-made elements include rice fields, mixed gardens, and residential areas. The settlement area itself contains both traditional and modern houses, a mosque, and cemeteries. These elements consist of traditional houses, mersah, joyah, keben, beranang, and open areas used for agriculture and vegetable farming. The landscape model of Gayo traditional settlements forms a cluster pattern, with the settlements surrounded by rice fields.
