Abstract

Descriptive discourse analysis (DDA) considers discourse as a bigger language unit than sentence and as merely neutral linguistic phenomenon, meanwhile critical discourse analysis (CDA) (Foucault) sees discourse as constructed linguistic practice which builds social practice to change or keep power dominance. If the focus of DDA is on cohesion-coherence of text in making the unity of textual meaning, the focus of CDA is on the totality of relation of discourse which reveals and hidden to uncover the relation of power dominance among the groups inside. In DDA conclusion of the text of Freeport mine labor conflict news is: “Intimidation act of the strike labors towards the non-strike labors has caused PT Freeport to stop the production activity”. In CDA the text of the same news will be interpreted as: “Salary range based on race discrimination in Freeport labors increases horizontal conflict which is reconciled through dialogues under the control of company, so it guarantees labor’s obedience and productivity and covers the reality at once that Freeport gets so big benefit, Freeport exploitation has destroyed environment, and Timika people are still in poverty“.

Abstract

Abstract. This study is about Patriarchal Culture in Madeline Miller, Circe. The objectives of the study are to identify and explain the forms of patriarchal culture and the effect of patriarchal culture on the main character, Circe. This study utilizes feminist analysis and literary theory approach to unveil the role and influence of patriarchal culture within the novel. Through an in-depth analysis of the main character, Circe, this research reveals how ancient Greek patriarchal culture produce the oppression and subordination of women in society. The findings of this research demonstrate that the novel Circe creatively reinterprets myths and showcases the vulnerability and strength of women that are sometimes overlooked in ancient Greek mythology narratives. The character of Circe is employed to depict women's struggle against patriarchal norms and their quest for self-sovereignty. From the results of analysis, there areetwo formssof patriarchal culture, namely Private Patriarchy and Public Patriarchy. The patriarchal culture that is still considered normal in this fairy tale has a negative impact on the goddess in many ways. Women lose a lot due to the dominance of men over them. Women are devalued by the powerful gods who also put them in a poor position. As a result of this patriarchal culture, the Goddesses are subject to many misconceptions. These gods believe that women are just there to serve their husbands and procreate, as Perse does. The last effect of this patriarchal society is the prevalence of severe physical or psychological violence

Abstract

Abstract

This research examines the elements of magical realism, using descriptive qualitative method, a literary genre depicting magic in the modern world, in Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief." Applying Wendy B. Faris' theory of magical realism's five characteristics: the irreducible element, the phenomenal world, unsettling doubts, merging realism, and disruption of time/space/identity. The research identifies these aspects in the novel. The analysis reveals the novel contains irreducible magical elements like worlds, characters, and objects, exemplified by Percy's encounter with the shape-shifting monster Erinyes disguised as his teacher. The phenomenal world encompasses magical places and beings. Unsettling doubts arise from Percy directly addressing the reader about his experiences. Merging realism intertwines the magical realm rooted in myths with the tangible world, as monsters and gods frequently intermingle with reality. Disruption of time manifests when Percy experiences slowed time at the Lotus Hotel during his quest. The study concludes that "The Lightning Thief" exhibits all five characteristics of magical realism by integrating mythological magic into the contemporary setting. Irreducible magical elements, a phenomenal, magical world, narrator-induced unsettling doubts, the merging of mythical and real realms, and space-time distortions collectively categorize the novel as an exemplar of magical realist fiction.

Abstract

Family is one of the most important social institutions and primary groups in society. It is a social group consisting of members related to one another by blood and marital ties. There are several functions of family, such as economic, educational, religious, prestige, protecting, recreational, and affecting function. If the functions above fail to be fulfilled in the family, this condition is called a family dysfunction. Family dysfunction is any condition that interferes with healthy family functioning. This article is about family dysfunction in Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl as the data source. This research applies the qualitative research design meanwhile the approach used is sociological. Two problems that will be discussed in this research are the causes and the effects of family dysfunction experienced by the Avery family in the novel. The family is characterized by a range of dysfunctional dynamics that impact each member of the family. The family consists of the father, Athur, the mother, Laura, and the twin daughters, Cath and Wren. Athur suffers from mental illness and Laura leaves the family. Both facts are examples of the causes of family dysfunction, while the examples of its effects are that Cath and Wren suffer from anxiety and depression. Family dysfunction is a general problem that may happen to other families. Analyzing literary depictions of family dysfunction also highlights the need for social support systems and policy interventions to address common sources of family problems. The complex character portrayals in Fangirl provide a vivid and nuanced representation of dysfunctional family dynamics, underscoring the importance of functional families for individual and societal well-being.
