Abstract

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes are crucial in providing the skilled workforce required by various industrial sectors in Malaysia. Mathematical knowledge and skills are essential foundations in TVET programmes as they equip students with the numerical skills, measurement, problem-solving abilities, and logical reasoning needed in various skill areas. However, studies show that TVET students face weaknesses in mathematics, such as poor understanding of basic concepts, weak calculation and problem-solving skills, and difficulties in applying mathematical concepts to new situations related to their skill areas. To overcome these weaknesses, new approaches in mathematics teaching and learning are needed, including emphasis on mathematical applications in skill areas, more effective pedagogy, and adequate training for instructors. Due to the complexity of problems that engineering staff need to solve, they require training in real-life problem-solving scenarios. MBOT accreditation guidelines emphasise the critical importance of developing mathematical competencies in producing versatile graduates who can apply mathematical knowledge to address real-world challenges in their respective disciplines. Therefore, a phenomenological approach was used in this study to identify mathematical competencies (MC) among engineering staff serving in manufacturing workplaces. Data were collected through intensive interviews, and phenomenological reduction techniques were used for data analysis. The findings show that mathematical competencies frequently used by engineering staff include Manage to Gather Data Problem Handling, Tools management, and Self-mathematical Decision. This study can provide input to instructors on developing mathematical competencies relevant to real-life problem-solving in TVET academic activities and programmes at their respective institutions.

Abstract

Critical thinking ability is an essential component of the four skills needed in the 21st century. However, this ability is still challenging to achieve well by students because of the lack of communication and cooperation during learning mathematics. Therefore, this experimental study with a posttest-only control design was conducted to determine the effect of using the jigsaw cooperative learning model on students' mathematical critical thinking skills. This study involved 62 students consisting of 31 students for the experimental class and 31 students for the control class. Data were analyzed using parametric statistics, namely t-test. The calculation of effect sizes is carried out to determine how much influence the Jigsaw cooperative model has on critical thinking skills using the Hedges'g equation. The analysis results concluded that the critical thinking skills of students who were taught using the jigsaw cooperative learning model were better than those taught using the direct learning model, at a significance level of 0.05. Further analysis obtained an effect size of 0.64, indicating that jigsaw cooperative learning has a moderate effect on students' critical thinking skills. These results provide helpful information for educators and researchers to consider mediators that might mediate the implementation of the learning method in the future.

Abstract

Immersive technology with augmented reality (AR) as a didactic support has gone global and enriched the learning process with various packages of advantages. Although there have been many meta-analyses to test the aggregate effect of AR on students' academic performance, few have considered the duration of treatment as a moderator variable and also the comparison of the effect of AR in mathematics learning with other subjects. This study was conducted to. This random effect meta-analysis study was conducted to test the effectiveness of the application of immersive AR technology in learning by considering the duration of treatment and subject matter as research features and specifically identifying data from the Scopus database. This objective was achieved by examining 73 independent comparisons (n = 2822) that met the requirements and were identified from the Scopus database. The results of the CMA software-assisted analysis showed that the integration of immersive augmented reality technology in learning had a moderate effect (g = 0.75, p < 0.005) compared to learning conditions without AR. These results also add empirical validity to the relationship between categorical variables and the size of the research effect, as needed to understand research in the context of the application of AR in mathematics learning in the future. By clarifying the impact of AR implementation in mathematics learning, this study contributes to teachers to improve teaching effectiveness, enrich interactive learning media, and arouse students' interest and understanding of mathematical concepts in a more concrete and visual way. These findings also provide new directions for teachers, lecturers, stakeholders, and professionals in their efforts to develop a didactic framework by considering the duration of treatment in future AR applications.

Abstract

This research presents an innovative approach to numeracy instruction for pre-service elementary school teachers using holographic images. The primary contribution is the integration of low-cost, mobile-based holographic prototyping within teacher education to enhance spatial reasoning, foster interdisciplinary learning, and support experiential pedagogy. This research aims to analyze prospective teachers' perspectives on holographic media in numeracy learning, with a focus on their experiences in designing and evaluating hologram prototypes for classroom use. A qualitative methodology was adopted, involving 59 pre-service teachers from an elementary teacher education program. Data collection utilized questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, with thematic analysis employed to identify key patterns and themes. Participants engaged in an iterative design process, developing and testing several holographic prototypes, which resulted in a truncated pyramid configuration optimized for mobile-based projection. The analysis identified four principal themes: interdisciplinary applicability, pedagogical strategies for young learners, development of holographic problem-solving skills, and improved spatial–structural understanding. The findings suggest that holographic learning activities enhance student engagement, deepen conceptual understanding, and strengthen both spatial and collaborative skills. This study extends the literature on numeracy and STEM education by illustrating the effective integration of immersive holographic media into pre-service teacher training as a practical and pedagogically valuable instructional innovation.Â
