Developing E-Learning based English Reading Materials for the Tenth Year Multimedia Students of SMK N 3 Singaraja Trika Adi Ana, I Ketut

Abstract

Abstract This study was a research and development (R&D), which aimed at (1) developing types of reading materials that are needed by the tenth year multimedia students of SMK N 3 Singaraja; finding out (2) the content validity of the developed material; (3) the quality of the developed material based on the criteria of good ESP material and good e-learning; and (4) whether or not the developed material could improve the reading comprehension of the tenth year multimedia students of SMK N 3 Singaraja. This study followed the R&D design by Lee and Owens. This design involves: need analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This study was conducted at SMK N 3 Singaraja, the subjects of the study being the students of class X MM 2. The data were collected through questionnaire, interview, expert judgment sheet, scoring rubric, and tests. The data from the result of observation, interview and questionnaire during the need analysis process were analyzed using Interactive Data Analysis Model. The result of the expert judgment in validating the content validity of the developed material was analyzed using Interrater Agreement Model. While the result of the scoring rubrics in measuring the quality of the developed material based on the criteria of good ESP material and good e-learning material were analyzed using Theoretic Ideal Reference. The result of this study shows that: (1) the tenth year multimedia students of SMK N 3 Singaraja need specific English materials that are related to their future job or study. The existing syllabus and material did not cover their needs since the syllabus and the material were designed to be used for all departments in SMKN 3 Singaraja, namely: Electricity Installation, Multimedia, Audio Video, Computer and Networking, Light Vehicle, Motor Cycle, Building Construction, and Engineering Departments; (2) based on the validation process that was conducted through expert judgment, it was confirmed that the developed material had a very high validity; (3) from the result of the expert judgment based on the criteria of good ESP material and good e-learning material, the developed material was categorized into very good material; and (4) the result of the field study shows that the developed material could improve the students’ reading comprehension. It can be seen from the result of pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II that measured the students’ reading comprehension. The students’ mean score for those tests, which reflect the students’ reading comprehension, increased from 40.9 in pre-test, to 66.3 in post-test I, and 79.1 in post-test II. Based on the result of the questionnaire, the students had strongly positive attitude toward the developed material; and (5) from the observation in developing and implementing the developed material, the problems that were found can be classified into technical and financial problems. Abstract

Abstract: Teaching English for Young Learners Using a Digital Comic Strip. Since young learners get bored easily, English teachers should be creative in designing the instruction in order to make it interesting for the students. One of the ways that can be done by the English teachers to make their teaching and learning process becomes an interesting activity is by providing good teaching media. It is believed that young learners love story and colorful teaching media. Therefore, this article aims at explaining how to create a colorful digital comic strip and how to use it for teaching English. Specifically, this article discusses about: (1) the role of story in teaching English for young learners; (2) how to design and develop a digital comic strip; (3) how to teach English for young learners using a digital comic strip; and (4) the benefits of teaching English for young learners using a digital comic strip. It is expected that this article could give enough information for those English teachers who want to teach English for young learners using a digital comic strip. Para guru yang mengajar Bahasa Inggris untuk anak-anak hendaknya kreatif dalam mendesain sebuah pembelajaran untuk menciptakan pembelajaran yang menarik bagi peserta didik. Hal tersebut karena peserta didik anak-anak sangat cepat bosan. Salah satu cara yang dapat dilaku-kan untuk mencipatakan pembelajaran yang menarik adalah dengan membuat media pembelajaran yang bagus. Anak-anak biasanya menyukai cerita dan media pembelajaran yang berwarna-warni. Untuk itu artikel ini akan menjelaskan mengenai cara mengembangkan komik strip digital berwarna dan strategi untuk mengajar Bahasa Inggris menggunakan komik strip digital tersebut. Secara spesi-fik, artikel ini akan membahas mengenai: (1) peranan cerita dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris un-tuk peserta didik anak-anak; (2) cara mendesain dan mengembangkan komik strip digital; (3) strate-gi mengajar menggunakan komik strip digital; dan (4) manfaat pembelajaran bahasa Inggris meng-gunakan komik strip digital. Abstract

Currently students are still studying to become flight attendants, they cannot provide valid data. Therefore, further investigation is urgently needed to systematically identify and assess English learning materials tailored for aspiring Gen Z flight attendants. This research analyzes appropriate English learning resources designed for Gen Z students who aspire to pursue a career as a flight attendant. Using a needs analysis approach, this research follows the target situation analysis model. This research was conducted at a private aviation school in Bali. Data collection methods are interviews and questionnaires, with sample selection guided by purposive sampling. Using an interactive data analysis model, qualitative analysis is applied to analyze the collected data. The research results show that, according to curriculum requirements, learning materials must facilitate effective communication skills that are useful and important for the role of flight attendants in the world of work. The senior flight attendant emphasized the importance of the material in increasing students' self-confidence and fostering a friendly attitude in using English, as well as understanding how to communicate with passengers in a good and purposeful manner. Students also prefer varied content such as multimedia, such as video examples and online quizzes. This study emphasizes adapting English learning materials for Gen Z flight attendant candidates to facilitate good, friendly, confident English communication. And by increasing cross-cultural understanding and providing interesting digital resources that can be accessed via smartphone according to developments in this century.

Abstract

The Independent Curriculum requires teachers to have the ability to use technology in the learning process and improve students' literacy skills. However, there are still many teachers who experience difficulties in using technology and increasing student literacy. For this reason, this study aims to identify the effect of multimodal training on increasing teacher readiness to implement technology-based literacy learning. This research is a mixed-method study with a concurrent triangulation design involving 24 English teachers. Methods of data collection through questionnaires, interviews and observation. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. This study found that teacher readiness in implementing technology-based literacy learning increased significantly after multimodal training. These results are supported by qualitative data showing that teachers feel better prepared to teach literacy in English. This study also found that teachers positively perceive multimodal training. It can be concluded that multimodal training positively affects teacher readiness in implementing technology-based English literacy learning. Thus, implementing multimodal training can be used as a solution to solve teacher problems in conducting the teaching and learning process using technology and increasing student literacy.
