Abstract

Abstract

Gout requires sustained urate control, whereas evidence on acupuncture-related changes in urate biomarkers remains inconsistent. This study examined pre-post changes in blood uric acid across three sessions of Garuda Indonesia (GI) Acupuncture using a single-group repeated-measures design. Complete data were available for 24 participants aged 20–58 years (mean 35.2±10.3 years), comprising 15 females (62.5%) and 9 males (37.5%). The three sessions were separated by 6-day intervals, and uric acid was measured 30 minutes before and 10 minutes after each session using an EasyTouch® GCU ET-301 with capillary whole blood. Analyses included descriptive statistics, a linear mixed-effects model, paired t-tests with Holm adjustment, Wilcoxon sensitivity analyses, and Cohen’s dz. Mean values changed from 6.16±1.78 to 5.85±1.63 mg/dL in Session 1, 6.19±1.50 to 5.86±1.33 mg/dL in Session 2, and 6.00±1.60 to 5.73±1.44 mg/dL in Session 3. The corresponding mean reductions were 0.304 mg/dL (95% CI 0.116–0.492), 0.325 mg/dL (95% CI 0.150–0.500), and 0.271 mg/dL (95% CI 0.098–0.444). The mixed model estimated an overall reduction of 0.300 mg/dL (95% CI 0.204–0.396; p<0.001), with no evidence that the pre-post effect differed across sessions (interaction p=0.901). In each session, 19 of 24 participants showed a decrease. The pattern was statistically consistent, but the absolute change was small and reflects only a very short-term change assessed 10 minutes after each session. Because the study had no control group, recruitment procedures were incompletely documented, hydration was not standardized, comorbidities were not collected systematically, and renal function was not assessed, the findings remain exploratory and do not establish causality or long-term gout control.
