Abstract

ABSTRACT Writing is the process of expressing and developing ideas in written form. Students face some difficulties in writing descriptive text, to solve this problem the researcher tried to enhance students writing ability in descriptive text by using Outdoor Learning Strategy. Outdoor learning strategy is a strategy that use natural or environment as a place to learn and it purpose to help students can understand the material. Therefore, this study aimed to know the students improvement after got treatment of outdoor learning strategy. This research used a descriptive quantitative method, with pre – experimental design with the type one group pre – test post – test design. Population of this study is all students of class X IPA SMA Negeri 1 Suwawa and sample of this research were the students class X IPA 3. The data were collected by doing test and scoring with rubric. This research were analyzing by using t test. The result of this research shows that the mean score of pre – test is 6.84 and post – test is 14.4. Moreover, the result of hypothesis verification, it is found that T count = 74.8 at the level of significance (a = 0.05) and degree of freedom (df) = 25 – 1= 24. Then, it is found that T table= 2.064. It can be concluded that Outdoor Learning strategy can enhance students ability in writing descriptive text, because based on the criteria above shows that t count is more than t table 74.8 ≥ 2.064. Thus, it can be concluded that Outdoor Learning strategy can enhance students’ ability in writing descriptive text. Keywords: writing, descriptive text, outdoor learning strategy

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic caused learning methods that were initially offline to become online. Therefore, this study aims to analyze students’ perceptions toward speaking during the pandemic. Quantitative descriptive method is used in this study with a questionnaire as an instrument. The results indicate that students respond positively toward online learning. This is evidenced by 54.81% of students who are inclined towards offline learning. While, the results based on gender, there are not specific difference between male and female students. Where 59.33% of male students give positive responses to online learning and 50.69% of female students gave positive responses to online learning.

Abstract

Kohesi dan koherensi merupakan aspek-aspek tulisan yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kualitas tulisan. Namun, mempertahankan kohesi dan koherensi dalam sebuah teks menjadi tantangan bagi sebagian siswa, khususnya mereka yang belajar bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing (EFL). Berdasarkan observasi awal terhadap mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa mahasiswa mengalami kesulitan dalam menjaga komponen kohesi dan koherensi dalam esai mereka. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bermaksud untuk menyelidiki komponen kohesi dan koherensi dalam esai argumentatif siswa. Analisis didasarkan pada komponen koherensi teks oleh Oshima & Hogue (2006) yang melibatkan perangkat kohesi, seperti kohesi gramatikal dan kohesi leksikal menciptakan pengulangan kata kunci, konsistensi kata ganti, sinyal transisi, dan urutan logis dari teks. teks. Objek penelitian ini adalah 16 esai argumentatif yang ditulis oleh mahasiswa semester 4 Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Negeri Gorontalo tahun ajaran 2020/2021. Data dikumpulkan melalui dokumentasi. Selanjutnya data dianalisis dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan kuantitatif dengan menggunakan analisis isi yang dikemukakan oleh Denscombe (2014). Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa esai argumentatif siswa mencapai tingkat penerapan komponen kohesi dan koherensi yang baik. Hal ini ditunjukkan dengan rata-rata skor mereka mencapai 66,95%. Para siswa memanfaatkan perangkat kohesi untuk membangun koherensi esai argumentatif mereka. Mereka akrab dengan komponen kohesi dan koherensi tetapi masih memiliki pemahaman yang terbatas tentang peran beberapa item dalam komponen kohesi dan koherensi. Ini mencakup konsistensi kata ganti dan kata transisi yang dibangun oleh item referensi dan konjungsi. Toh tidak mempengaruhi hasil akhir karena komponen kohesi dan koherensi yang sesuai sudah tampak dominan.

Abstract

This present study intended to examine how is the correlation between students’ multiple intelligences and students’ Achievement in English Speaking Subject. This research was conducted within the English language Education Study Programme at a university in the Province of Gorontalo with 50 students’ year 2021 as sample which were chosen randomly. The instruments used were the Multiple Intelligence questioner, and interview, as being said this study were using both quantitative and qualitative methods. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics the results from Pearson Correlation of students’ intelligence and achievement variables. Based on the data analysis, it was found between two variables was 0.464, results showed that medium correlation existed between multiple intelligences and Students’ speaking Achievement. This indicates that multiple intelligences did have affect toward students’ speaking achievement. Although, seems that there was not the only factor that affects achievement. Intrapersonal, the leading intelligence type, and musical intelligence was the least common intelligence type employed by the students who participated in this research.

Abstract

This research analyzes effect of fly swatter game in improving students’ vocabulary mastery. A quantitative method is employed in discovering the results, where it is conducted at SMP N 5 Dumogaand the participants were the A class of eight-grade students of SMP N 5 Dumoga. Data collection was employed by using pre- and post-test and the treatment is used as a means of improving students’ vocabulary mastery. The results showed that there is an improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery, which can be seen from the higher post-test score. Furthermore, by implementing fly swatter game, the students are being more active and enthusiasm in learning vocabularies related to the material taught by the researcher. As a result, they are not feel bored and keep their interest in following the learning process.Therefore, based on the explanation above, it can be summarized that the students’ vocabulary mastery is improved because of the implementation of Fly Swatter Game in teaching and learning process.

Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the frequency and reasons for using fillers during proposal seminar presentations among students in the English Department. The study involved five students who took the proposal seminar exam on March 18, 2022. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected and analyzed to identify the types and frequency of fillers used, as well as the underlying reasons for their use. The findings revealed that the frequency of unlexicalized fillers was higher (172 occurrences, average 74.78) compared to lexicalized fillers (31 occurrences, average 13.48). The main reasons for using fillers included nervousness, forgetting what to say, reflexive habits, and difficulty finding the right words. These results highlight the need for students to improve their speaking skills and practice more to minimize the use of fillers during presentations. Additionally, it is suggested that lecturers focus on reducing the use of fillers in speaking classes to enhance students' performance and confidence in public speaking. This research provides valuable insights for educators in developing more effective teaching strategies to improve students' oral communication skills.
