Abstract

The birth of exegesis literature and Qur’an translation in the local language is a response of and an influence from the socio-cultural background of mufassir. It is understandable considering that exegesis of the Qur’an was a result of mufassir’s intellectual construction explaining messages of God in the Qur’an taking into account human needs in a particular social and cultural environment including with its surrounding complex values. In this case, the researcher is interested in Tafsir Fayḍ al-Raḥmān written by Kiai Sholeh Darat, for it was a fact of the prevailing internalization of Javanese culture into Islam which creates a collaboration pattern between a specific Javanese culture and Islam and becomes a particular phenomenon in terms of tafsīr al-Qur’ān. Several reasons underlie Kiai Sholeh Darat to undertake intellectual preaching to people by writing works in local language. First, the social and political conditions in last 19th Century show that that majority of Javanese people are Muslims who are unfamiliar with religious understanding. Second, in that condition, Java was under control of colonial governor that supervised and restricted Kiai Saleh Darat preaching.

Abstract

This study examines the jidāl method in the dialogue between Prophet Musa and Prophet Khidir in QS. Al-Kahfi [18]: 60–82 and its relevance to contemporary digital literacy challenges. Employing a qualitative library research approach, this study analyzes Qur’anic verses, classical and contemporary tafsir literature, as well as scholarly works on digital literacy, misinformation, and information ethics. The findings reveal that the jidāl method in the Musa–Khidir narrative is not merely a form of dialogue but an epistemological process that cultivates intellectual humility, contextual understanding, critical inquiry, and epistemic patience. The narrative demonstrates that premature judgments often arise from limited information and inadequate contextualization, conditions that closely resemble the mechanisms through which misinformation and hoaxes spread in digital environments. Through a Maqashid Syariah perspective, particularly the principle of ḥifẓ al-‘aql, the study argues that the narrative contributes to the preservation and development of human intellect by encouraging verification, reflective thinking, and wisdom-oriented judgment. Based on these findings, the study formulates a Qur’anic Digital Literacy Model consisting of three interconnected stages: verification (tabayyun and tatsabbut), clarification through constructive dialogue (jidāl ḥakīm), and transformation toward wisdom (ḥikmah). The study contributes theoretically to the intersection of Qur’anic studies, Maqashid Syariah, and digital literacy scholarship while providing practical insights for developing ethical and responsible information behavior in the digital age.

Abstract

This study examines the relevance of the Barikan tradition from the perspective of the Living Qur'an, exploring how Qur'anic values are embodied in local cultural practices. The Barikan tradition represents the community's appreciation of the Qur'an through collective prayers and communal meals as expressions of gratitude, solidarity, and social harmony. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design, using observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review as data collection techniques. The findings reveal that Barikan is not merely a cultural ritual but a living manifestation of Qur'anic teachings on gratitude (Qur'an 14:7), tolerance (Qur'an 60:8), and human brotherhood (Qur'an 49:13). These values are internalized and practiced in everyday social life, reflecting the dynamic interaction between sacred text and local culture. The tradition also illustrates the Living Qur'an framework articulated by Sahiron Syamsuddin, Islah Gusmian, and Fahruddin Faiz, in which the Qur'an functions not only as a scriptural text but also as a source of lived values that shape social behavior and cultural identity. This study contributes to the Living Qur'an discourse by demonstrating that local traditions can serve as meaningful expressions of Qur'anic ethics, fostering social cohesion and embodying the universal principle of rahmatan lil-'ālamīn (mercy to all creation).

Abstract

This study examines the problems surrounding the registration of waqf land in Berbek District, Nganjuk Regency, through a critical analysis from the perspective of the Qur’an. The registration of waqf land functions as an instrument for legal certainty and the protection of waqf assets; however, in practice it continues to face various administrative and social obstacles. This research employs a qualitative method with a normative–empirical approach. Data were collected through interviews with officials of the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA), waqf nazhirs, and community leaders, and were supported by an analysis of waqf-related documents. The findings indicate that the main problems in waqf land registration in Berbek include the low level of legal awareness among wakifs and nazhirs, limited understanding of registration procedures, and the perception that a religious waqf pledge is sufficient without formal registration. From the Qur’anic perspective, these conditions contradict the values of trust (amānah), justice (‘adl), and the principle of documentation (al-kitābah), which aim to safeguard public interest (maṣlaḥah) and prevent disputes.
