Abstract

The researchers place a great deal of emphasis on the Group Discussion Method since it is necessary for students towards their communication proficiency. Communication is an important element to achieve better understanding among communicators. Therefore, this present study aims to discover students’ perception of using the Group Discussion Method towards their proficiency in English speaking. This research relays on a quantitative descriptive research design using a questionnaire to collect data. The questionnaire was distributed online to thirty-four respondents. The respondents are fifth-semester students of the English Language Education Department of Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta who has learned English speaking using the Group Discussion Method. Data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive perceptions presentation. The research findings indicate that 80% of respondents state that Group Discussions Method is an interactive, friendly, innovative, and interaction-built approach between teacher and students. Besides, it also increases their English speaking proficiency since they are learning in a group where they are required to talk and discuss in English. This research is limited to small-scale respondents; thus, further researchers are recommended to conduct research with wide-scale respondents.

Abstract

This study attempts to examine EFL students’ achievement in reading comprehension of recount text through gamification Kahoot, a technological-based learning platform, as well as to explore their perceptions of using gamification Kahoot as an assessment tool in the reading test. The data were obtained from both tests and questionnaires, and the assessment criteria used as proposed by Kartika (2001), and uses descriptive analysis. Meanwhile, the students’ perceptions are based on the indicator theory of perceptions proposed by Hamka (2002). 36 students (21 females, and 15 male students) in the tenth grade of the State Vocational High School 1 Godean in the academic year 2022/2023 participated as the respondents. The findings revealed that the highest score on the test was 100 and the lowest score was 53. Meanwhile, the average or mean of the student's score is 74 with a total score of 2664. Furthermore, the achievement of students in reading comprehension of recount text using gamification Kahoot is in the "Good" category (74). Meanwhile, the students’ perceptions showed that gamification Kahoot as an assessment tool can motivate students, and create fun classroom conditions.

Abstract

This article attempts to scrutinize the use of the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) as one of the teaching methods in English language teaching for EFL students. In the English language learning and teaching context, applying an appropriate teaching method for each language skill and component is necessary for EFL teachers to help their students achieve their learning goals. The present study utilized a qualitative descriptive approach to explore several important points relating to how the GTM may facilitate EFL learners in learning reading subjects. The data were obtained from previous research findings, and documentation studies, and further analyzed qualitatively. Facilitating students’ learning needs will motivate EFL learners to actively participate in their learning activities. Therefore, the present study discusses a brief of GTM, the development of GTM, the purposes of using GTM, the technique of using GTM, the benefit of GTM, and last but not least the implication of GTM for EFL students in learning reading subject in the classroom setting. Finally, some necessary points from the perspectives of GTM are highlighted in the conclusion and suggestion part.
