Abstract

The present study aims at (1) exploring the learningmaterials which are available for non-native learners ofIndonesian who learn Indonesian at Elementary level, andtheir weaknesses; (2) examining and developing thealternative model to suit the needs of non-native learners ofIndonesian to communicate intensively in Indonesian; and(3) evaluating the effectiveness of the learning material usedfor non-native learners of Indonesian at Elementary level.The research design in this study was research anddevelopment (R&D) model by Borg and Gall (1983: 775).The subjects of the try out were six Darmasiswa students atUNNES BIPA program in the academic year of 2012/2013.They were one student from Japan, one from Poland, twofrom Estonia, one from Czechoslovakia, and one studentfrom the Netherlands.The product developed has been examined in the tryoutsession. Students’ achievement was improved after usingthe product. The improvement of students’ achievement wasabout 20% to 25%. Finally, it can be concluded that theIndonesian textbook developed for non-native learners ofIndonesian at Elementary level is helpful, effective, andappropriate to be used in the Indonesian to speakers of otherlanguages program.Keywords: Material Development, Elementary level,Indonesian textbook, Non-native Learners ofIndonesian.

Abstract

Apart from teaching, English language teachers need to assess their students by giving a test to know the students’ achievements. In general, teachers are barely conducting item analysis on their tests. As a result, they have no idea about the quality of their test distributed to the students. The present study attempts to figure out the levels of difficulty (LD) and the discriminating power (DP) of the multiple-choice (MC) test item constructed by an English teacher in the reading comprehension test utilizing test item analysis. This study employs a qualitative approach. For this purpose, a test of 50-MC test items of reading comprehension was obtained from the students’ test results. Thirty-five students of grade eight took part in the MC test try-out. They are both male (15) and female (20) students of junior high school 2 Kempo, in West Nusa Tenggara Province. The findings revealed that16 items out of 50 test items were rejected due to the poor and worst quality level of difficulty and discriminating index. Meanwhile, 12 items need to be reviewed due to their mediocre quality, and 11 items are claimed to have good quality items. Besides, 11 items out of 50 test items were considered as the excellent quality as their DP scores reached around 0.44 through 0.78. The implications of the present study will shed light on the quality of teacher-made test items, especially for the MC test.

Abstract

English language teachers nowadays are challenged to present interesting and innovative ways of teaching English in order to motivate their students to learn. Magic card can be used as an alternative learning medium toward the students’ ability to write descriptive text. The present study attempts to figure out students’ ability in writing descriptive text utilizing magic card and to describe the students’ perceptions about the use of magic card in writing descriptive text. Therefore, a quantitative descriptive research design was applied. Furthermore, to obtain the data needed, a set of test and questionnaire were administered to 36 participants (29 females and 7 males) of the tenth-grade students. The findings revealed that the total mean of students’ ability was categorized into good criteria (84%). It means that the students’ ability in writing descriptive text is significantly improved. Moreover, the results of questionnaire showed that students like using magic card because magic card is an interesting medium which would make students enjoy in studying, active in writing and creative in thinking. Besides, magic card can enrich students’ vocabulary as it promotes students’ creativity.

Abstract

The present study attempts to explore EFL students’ perceptions of utilizing English songs to enhance students’ vocabulary mastery. The present study employs a qualitative descriptive research design and the data were gathered by administering an online survey using a questionnaire through Google Forms as the research instrument. 56 (39 females and 17 males) EFL students from Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta were involved in the present study.Apart from the questionnaire, an online semi-structured interview with 6 respondents using the Whatsapp application was also conducted to further explore their views about how English songs could improve their vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, there are five questions that respondents should be filled out in the online google form using the 4 Likert Scale, ranging from the lowest point 1 (strongly disagree) to the highest point 4 (strongly agree). The interview was conducted to further explore their perceptions of how the English songs enrich their vocabulary mastery. The findings revealed that 46,6% of respondents strongly agree and 44,6% agree that they would look up the meaning of the song's lyrics given. Furthermore, 50% of the respondents strongly agree and 41.1% of them agree about English songs facilitate them to learn English. Meanwhile, 42,9% of the respondents strongly agree and 41,1% agree about English songs as an interesting media of learning, therefore, they utilized the songs to enhance their vocabulary achievement. The results of the interview respondents revealed six respondents (MZ, KF, PL, AF, SF, and GT) perceived that the utilization of songs in their learning brings a positive impact on their English language vocabulary development. However, two respondents, DL and GT viewed that English songs have both advantages and disadvantages for some reasons.

Abstract

Writing is one of the language skills that is considered difficult for most Indonesian EFL students. Teachers are challenged to provide an interesting medium of learning to increase students' writing skills and motivation. Natural disaster pictures can be utilized as an alternative medium for learning to write report text. Therefore, this study aims to find out students' ability in writing report texts using natural disaster picture and to describe perceptions of students in using natural disaster picture as a medium of learning to write report texts. The respondents were 22 students in the tenth grade at SMA N 1 Binangun in the academic year 2021/2022. A descriptive quantitative study was utilized in the present study. To collect the data needed, the researchers used tests and questionnaires. Furthermore, a test is used to collect the data on students' achievement in writing report text, meanwhile, a questionnaire is used to find out students' perceptions of using natural disaster picture as a learning medium to write report text. The results of the study revealed that the total score of students is 1308 and the mean score is 60. It means that the achievement of tenth-grade students at SMA N 1 Binangun is categorized as "Enough" as per the scoring rubric conversion scale. Meanwhile, the results of the questionnaire showed that using natural disaster picture as a medium of learning may motivate students to learn, create an interesting atmosphere, and provide new experiences in learning to write report text.

Abstract

The delivery of listening instructions proved difficult for students, who also lacked interest in English subjects. One potential solution to improve their listening skills could be the use of effective learning media that engages their interest in the subject matter. The purposes of this study were to investigate students’ listening proficiency and figure out students’ perceptions of utilizing videos as media for learning English listening subjects. A quantitative research design was applied to gather the data required through a test and questionnaire. Furthermore, a test was used to gather data related to students' listening ability, and a questionnaire was used to find out students' perceptions of utilizing videos as sources of learning listening. Respondents in this study were twenty-five students from the eleventh grade of SMK N 1 Pleret, Yogyakarta. The findings of the present study revealed that the total mean score (????̅) of the students' test results was 76,8, which is categorized as a "Fair" level of achievement. Other findings revealed that the use of video brings a positive impact on students' learning situation because the use of videos made it possible for students to actively participated in their listening class activities. The results indicated that students enjoy watching videos, and believe that watching videos could enhance their listening proficiency.  Besides, videos provide visual elements which can be the key element in assisting students to enhance their listening ability.

Abstract

The presence of a technology-based speech learning application namely English Language Speech Application (ELSA), an artificial intelligence (AI) may promote EFL students' speaking performance because of its great features. This research attempts to examine EFL students' speaking performance by using the ELSA speak application, further explore their perceptions of using it, and find out the inhibiting factors influencing low performance in their speaking. A mixed-method research design was applied to obtain both quantitative and qualitative data. 21 EFL students (5 Males and 16 Females) from Universitas Teknologi Yogyakarta were involved in the data gathering process which was collected by using a test, questionnaire, and semi-structured interview. Furthermore, pre-test and post-test were conducted to examine their speaking ability, and a questionnaire using a 4-point Likert scale. In addition, a semi-structured interview was conducted to further explore the inhibiting factors of their low speaking performance. The findings revealed that students' speaking ability has significantly improved after using the ELSA application. It can be known the mean score of pre-test results was 75, meanwhile, the post-test score was 88. There was a 17% improvement after using the ELSA application. Furthermore, of 20 respondents, 18 (90%) of respondents feel confident in speaking English by using the ELSA Speak application. Only 2 (10%) of the respondents disagree and none strongly disagree about the statement. Of 20 respondents, 16 or 80% of respondents have positive perceptions that using ELSA may increase their speaking performance. Moreover, of 20 respondents, 19 or 95% of respondents perceived ELSA to be a great speech application that could boost their motivation to improve their speaking performance. 18 or 90% of respondents perceived that this application has a good quality learning design. Meanwhile, internal and external factors were identified as the inhibiting factors influencing their low speaking performance.

Abstract

This study attempts to examine EFL students’ achievement in reading comprehension of recount text through gamification Kahoot, a technological-based learning platform, as well as to explore their perceptions of using gamification Kahoot as an assessment tool in the reading test. The data were obtained from both tests and questionnaires, and the assessment criteria used as proposed by Kartika (2001), and uses descriptive analysis. Meanwhile, the students’ perceptions are based on the indicator theory of perceptions proposed by Hamka (2002). 36 students (21 females, and 15 male students) in the tenth grade of the State Vocational High School 1 Godean in the academic year 2022/2023 participated as the respondents. The findings revealed that the highest score on the test was 100 and the lowest score was 53. Meanwhile, the average or mean of the student's score is 74 with a total score of 2664. Furthermore, the achievement of students in reading comprehension of recount text using gamification Kahoot is in the "Good" category (74). Meanwhile, the students’ perceptions showed that gamification Kahoot as an assessment tool can motivate students, and create fun classroom conditions.

Abstract

Vocabulary and translation are two aspects that have a close relationship in learning English as  to be able to translate a text student should have adequate vocabulary mastery. The presented study aims to figure out the correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their translation ability, and to explore their problems in translating English descriptive text into Indonesian. This study applied quantitative research by using the correlational method, and the respondents were 32 students of grade X C at SMAN 1 Purwanegara, Central Java. Furthermore, in order to gather the data, researchers used tests and semi-structured interviews. The data were analysed using Pearson-Product Moment correlation using SPSS 26.0. The findings revealed that the mean score of students’ vocabulary mastery was 66.72, and the mean score of translation ability was 63.72. Meanwhile, the correlation value (r) between the vocabulary mastery and English-Indonesian translation ability score is 0.786. Thus, based on the interpretation score of correlation proposed by Sugiyono (2018), the correlation between vocabulary mastery and the ability to translate the descriptive text was in the high category (0.786), Furthermore, the result of hypothesis testing revealed that the comparison of the “rcount” and the “rtable” shows that rcount as much as 0,786 is clearly higher than “rtable” value which is 5% or 0,338 and 1% or 0,435. Therefore, there is a high correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability to translate descriptive text into Indonesian.

Abstract

This article attempts to scrutinize the use of the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) as one of the teaching methods in English language teaching for EFL students. In the English language learning and teaching context, applying an appropriate teaching method for each language skill and component is necessary for EFL teachers to help their students achieve their learning goals. The present study utilized a qualitative descriptive approach to explore several important points relating to how the GTM may facilitate EFL learners in learning reading subjects. The data were obtained from previous research findings, and documentation studies, and further analyzed qualitatively. Facilitating students’ learning needs will motivate EFL learners to actively participate in their learning activities. Therefore, the present study discusses a brief of GTM, the development of GTM, the purposes of using GTM, the technique of using GTM, the benefit of GTM, and last but not least the implication of GTM for EFL students in learning reading subject in the classroom setting. Finally, some necessary points from the perspectives of GTM are highlighted in the conclusion and suggestion part.
