Abstract

Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) is a new approach for students to learn language through the use of mobile technology. Learning a language should not only happen in a class setting activity but also happen outside the class in which the students take charge of their learning. Hence, it requires students' autonomy in learning the language. Students are now able to carry out their learning without depending on the teachers, which then leads to a sustainable and independent learning process. Quizlet, a web application, is introduced in this paper as an alternative solution to improve students? speaking skill through an autonomous language learning activity. This paper used an action research method combined with a questionnaire to analyze the implementation of Quizlet in an autonomous class setting at STMIK AKAKOM Yogyakarta. The practical, usability, and sustainability aspects become the focus of this research. The data gathered from the action research shows that an autonomous learning activity still requires teachers to be the facilitator, and the questionnaire shows positive feedback from the students regarding the usability and sustainability of their language learning using the application.

Abstract

The study on the hippies is abundant in numbers but not many of them study the disposition and identification of the hippies during the 1960s and its aftermath. Pierre Bourdieu’s theory on cultural practice, theory of hybridity, and globalization are used in this research to investigate the disposition and trans-nationality of the hippies in order to search for their universal identity. A Transnational American Studies approach is implemented to cover the following issue: (1) the socio-cultural disposition of the hippies in the 1960s, (2) the influence of European movement to the American Hippies, (3) the cultural hybridity of the hippies in relation with India, and (4) the similarities of the hippies and the reasons behind it. This research used library research and document analysis method in gathering the data whereas descriptive analysis approach is also used to analyze the data. The United States of America, India and Germany are the three countries being studied in relation to the hippies in the 1960s. The finding shows similar dispositions or background among the hippies in some countries being studied as well as some similarities and differences in the cultural practices of the hippies in the countries being studied. This shows the transnationality of the hippie’s identity and the influence of hybridity and globalization which causes the shifting of ideology and cultural practices of the hippies in its developments. Keywords: hippies, identity, Pierre Bourdieu, habitus, hybridity, globalization, TransnationalAmerican Studies

Abstract

The current technological development has entered the 4.0 industrial revolutions. This revolution encouraged automation systems in almost all activities and processes . The time constraint for face-to-face interactions in the classroom often makes English learning becomes less effective, especially for classes with diverse levels of English proficiency. In a higher education system which demands active learning, English teachers often find it difficult to help students whose English language competence is below average . In fact , the target of learning English on campus is generally quite high. One of the solutions is that the teaching and learning process uses hybrid method- a learning system that complements face-to-face interactions in the classroom along with distant learning using the internet. Hybrid learning is able to complement the lack of time for face-to-face interactions in the classroom in the form of distance learning with the medium of internet. This paper is the result of the writer’s observations in applying this method when teaching the first semester of the 2021/2022 study period AMA Yogyakarta. This research is a descriptive quantitative research using questionnaires as the data retrieval technique. This research concludes that hybrid learning method can be used in English learning classes with 61,26% of students agree to the method, and 38,7% do not agree even though in general, they prefer face to face interaction. However, it can be a solution for distant learning since it is accessible anytime and anywhere although it requires stable internet connection as its basic requirements. Merek (Brand) sering diidentikkan dengan kualitas. Semakin kuat mereknya, semakin tinggi kualitasnya, sehingga semakin tinggi pula penjualannya.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of incorporating Virtual Reality Videos into the English language learning model at Universitas Teknologi Digital Indonesia. Employing a quasi-experimental design, the researcher implemented two distinct learning methods across separate class groups. One group utilized the Virtual Reality learning model, while the other adhered to traditional instructional methods. The assessment of the learning model's efficacy employed statistical tests and questionnaire analyses administered to participants post-learning sessions, coupled with classroom observations. Results from the research revealed that students utilizing Virtual Reality videos achieved higher scores compared to those using conventional videos. While questionnaire responses indicated relatively comparable outcomes, Virtual Reality videos demonstrated a marginal advantage concerning student learning experiences and motivation. This study contributes valuable insights into the pedagogical benefits of integrating VR technology, emphasizing its positive impact on language acquisition within the higher education context

Abstract

This study aims to describe the learning difficulties of Yogyakarta Administrative Management Academy students in acquiring English language skills. The survey targeted 205 students enrolled in the even semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. Qualitative description was used in data analysis. From the results of this study, two factors of difficulty were found, namely internal and external. The causes of students' learning difficulties from internal factors such as low level of intelligence, low aptitude in English subjects, lack of interest in learning, and low motivation to learn. Students attend only out of obligation and to get good grades and complete assignments, not to learn English as an international language that is so important today. The external factors that affect students who have difficulty learning English include a lack of support for the use of English at home or in the community, as well as limited opportunities to use English outside the classroom.
