Abstract

The study, entitled Daryl Wayne Flint's Psychopathic Disorder in Carla Norton's Hunted, studies the main character Daryl Wayne Flint who has various abnormal characteristics. The study aims to provide further information about psychopathic disorders. This research broadly explains the paradigm, causes, and effects of psychopathic disorder using a qualitative descriptive method combined with a psychological approach. The findings of Flint's symptoms are narcissistic, antisocial, aggressive sadism, and a strong paranoia orientation. The underlying cause for this disorder is started from childhood trauma and the environment that causes a lack of sympathy, negative internal states, and bad repetitive behavior. Flint also causes severe negative effects on his surroundings, including excessive sadistic aggression and long-term trauma for the survivors. Based on the findings above, Flint is a positive psychopathic disorder by showing a tendency for repetitive destructive behavior.

Abstract

The research aims to explain the causes of social inequality on women, the effects of social inequality on women, and the types of social inequality on women in Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns. The analysis uses literary theory sociology. The primary data used is a novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns. This research uses qualitative descriptive research. Descriptive research involves collecting novels and answering questions about the complications consistent with the problem statement. As a result, internal causes that occur in A Thousand Splendid Suns are low education and gender inequality. The external cause is due to the patriarchal system. Then, the positive effect of social inequality on Mariam is that she can be patient and tough. At the same time, the negative effect is that she often gets violence and oppression. Laila’s positive effect is that she becomes a brave woman who does not give up easily. The negative effect is that Laila often experiences violence and oppression. The social type of inequality in A Thousand Splendid Suns is the Existential type, meaning the unequal recognition of the human individual as a person. The findings from this analysis can help us understand more about the patriarchal system and make Laila a woman who is even more courageous in voicing rights related to gender equality, especially women’s rights.

Abstract

The title of this study is Miles’s Trauma in Colleen Hoover’s Ugly Love. The objective of this research is to examine the trauma suffered by Miles Archer as the main character. It uses qualitative method, and the research design is using psychological approach as a literary approach. The study aims to explore and find the cause of the trauma, and their effects on the character, and how the character solves the trauma. The results shows that the cause of his trauma is relate to the abandonment by his first love Rachel due to the car crash that result the death of their newborn baby. He is not just devastated by Rachel’s departure, but also the death of his son which make him lose person he loves the most. After Rachel left him, he promises himself not to fall in love with anyone again. The effects of his trauma also reveal that he faces difficulty and problems with relationships. The way Miles solves his trauma is by facing and accepting his fear and learning how to manage his feelings in order to heal.

Abstract

This study analyzes the depression experienced by Tina Evans in the novel of The Eyes of Darkness written by Dean Koontz. The focus of this research is the symptoms of depression, the causes, and effects of depression, as well as the solution of the depression of Tina Evans. This study uses a qualitative research and applies a psychological approach. From this analysis, it can be found that there are two symptoms of depression experienced by Tina Evans: sadness and sleep disturbances. Meanwhile the cause of Tina's depression is the stress of losing someone she loves. She gets divorce as her husband, Michael Evans, has an affair. Trauma becomes her next cause of her depression, and the last cause is the spiritual terror. Her depression provides three effects: insomnia, lack of concentration, and nightmares. In overcoming her depression she manages it in various ways. There are six solutions in overcoming her depression. The first is to distract her mind by hard working. The next is to take significant responsibility for her work. The third is trying to divert her mind by consuming alcohol. The fourth is to think positively. The fifth is expressing herself to talk to other people, in this case, to her boyfriend. The last one is to accept the spiritual terror haunting her and find the facts about the death of her son Danny Evans with the help of Elliot Stryker.

Abstract

Abstract. The aims of this study is to analyze the features of young adult literature, through the intrinsic elements of a young adult literature novel. Young adult literature is a work of literature that focuses on how teenagers address the issues of adolescents. The novel Satellite Love by Genki Ferguson with 272 pages in total have several themes that considered as a young adult literature. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the data to identify the features of young adult literature in the novel entitled Satellite Love and found what is distinguished from adult literature. In this study, some evidence was found that the characteristics of young adult literature are contained in the novel by Genki Ferguson published in 2021. It was also found that according to young adult literature, Stanton divided the plot have three stages namely, subplot, conflict, climax. Plot in a story moves quickly because it does not involve too many characters. Each chapter in Satellite Love is written from a different point of view of a teenager with a different physical appearance and a different ethnic origin. Satellite Love also deals with problems that teenagers commonly experience, such as bullying, isolation, loneliness, and falling in love and obsession. The novel Satellite Love can be concluded that most of the features of young adult literature can be represented in the novel Satellite Love.

Abstract

The research study titled "Massimo Torricelli's Obsession in Blanka Lipinska's 365 Days" was conducted to analyze the cause and effect of the main character's obsession in the novel. The research was motivated by the psychological theory of love and obsession proposed by Robert Stenberg, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy balance in relationships. The research problem focused on understanding Massimo Torricelli's obsession with Laura Biel and its implications for their relationship. A qualitative research design was used, utilizing a psychological perspective to analyze the main character's obsession. Data was collected from the novel "365 Days" and analyzed using Stenberg's obsession theory. Findings revealed that Massimo's obsession stems from a desire to possess and control Laura, rooted in past trauma and leading to controlling and manipulative behavior. Despite his flaws, Massimo demonstrated emotional depth and a willingness to connect with Laura on a deeper level. This study highlights the toxic dynamics in their relationship, and underscores the potential for growth and change. The implications of this study offer insight into the portrayal of love and relationships in literature as well as the importance of prioritizing healthy and balanced relationships. Abstract

Kegiatan pemberian edukasi tentang komunikasi publik kepada aparat pemerintahan Desa Campur, Kecamatan Gondang, Kabupaten Nganjuk, dapat berjalan efektif. Pelaksanaan komunikasi publik oleh kaur pemerintahan desa kepada tokoh-tokoh informal berorientasi pada tujuan akhirnya, yakni mengubah perilaku tokoh informal dalam hal menjaga kebersihan, kesehatan, dan kelestarian lingkungan. Karena yang dihadapi adalah tokoh informal, yang memiliki wibawa dan pengaruh sosial, aparat pemerintah desa harus menjaga muka dan harga diri tokoh tersebut, agar tetap terjaga hubungan baik dalam interaksi sosial selanjutnya, dan juga demi pengaruh positifnya kepada warga pada umumnya. Seiring dengan tuntutan perkembangan teknologi komunikasi, Kaur pemerintahan hendaknya memanfaatkan media social android platform WhatsApp (WA) untuk meningkatkan efisiensi dan efektivitas pelaksanaan komunikasi publik kepada warga.

Abstract

This study explores “Chinese Immigrant's Searching for Cultural Identity in Lian Gouw’s Only a Girl”. It aims to discuss how a Chinese girl searches for cultural identity, meanwhile the objectives of the study are the effort to search cultural identity, the problems, and the impacts of searching cultural identity. It uses a qualitative method as the research design and sociological approach as a literary approach. The result shows that Jenny coming from a Chinese immigrant family searches her cultural identity due to her different cultural identity she has. She raised in a Dutch culture is given a western name and introduced to western culture. The change of political situation after the post-independence period makes her difficult in searching cultural identity. She gets difficulties in navigating cultural identity. As she is unaccustomed to use the Indonesian culture, she encounters many challenges that generate a cultural conflict to adapt a new cultural identity. As a result, she changes her worldview and life decision. The findings of this study indicate that the efforts of searching and adapting cultural identity come from her family, such as giving a western name, and introducing a western culture. But the change of political situation, she gets difficulties in assimilating the Dutch culture. She changes her worldview and life decision by going to America to study a Veterinarian. Therefore, the cultural identity is socially constructed through conflicts.

Abstract

This research examines Aza Holmes’s Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down. It identifies manifestations of OCD through Aza's intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors, which are deeply rooted in her childhood habits. The research aims to achieve three objectives: to identify and describe of OCD in Aza's character, to examine its causes, and to analyze its effects. The scope of this study limits to Freud's psychoanalytic lens and focuses on a textual analysis of OCD main character in the novel. The significance of this study is to  offer insight into the complexities of OCD. Descriptive qualitative research design is used to involve gathering and analyzing data that are not numerical, but describes data related to the research topic. The study uses Sigmund Freud's theory of psychoanalysis, specifically the concepts of id, ego, and superego. The findings reveal that Aza’s OCD is triggers by both internal conflicts and external stimuli, such as her fixation on contamination and habitual self-injury. Her compulsions, such as repeatedly reopens wounds and drinking antiseptics, highlight the debilitating nature of the disorder. The study underscores how OCD affects her ability to maintain social connections, navigate personal relationships, and sustain her self-concept understanding in coping with OCD. This research contributes to the discourse on mental health representation in literature and demonstrates the value of psychoanalytic approach in unpacking complex characterization. It provides a foundation for future studies on the intersection of mental health and literary analysis, enriching both academic and practical perspectives on OCD.

Abstract

This study explores quest for the truth in Emma Donoghue’s The Wonder. It aims to discuss how a woman searches for the truth. Meanwhile the objectives of the study are the motivation to search the truth, and the struggles of searching the truth. It uses a qualitative method as the research design and psychological approach as a literary approach. In addition, Katsoff’s theory is used as theoretical framework. The result shows that Lib, a nurse, is assigned to investigate her patient, Anna O'Donnell who is reported to be able to survive without food for a couple of months. It challenges her because she sees the strong beliefs of the environment. She realizes that questing the truth is not just about finding the proofs. It is a belief system that demands her excessive sacrifice. She has a strong motivation to fight to find the truth. She gets profession-responsibility to investigate her patient. She struggles to manage her patient and has a commitment to bring Anna O'Donnell to a new life. Her struggles to quest the truth are not only internal, but also external. She faces strong resistance from Anna’s family and the fanatical village community. She conducts a great effort to quest the truth of her patient’s case. She is able to save Anna's life by reviving Anna's soul as a new identity.
