Abstract

Context awareness in tertiary education is a crucial aspect. This awareness should be perceived by university students to maximize their academic potentials. In so doing, this mini research employs context analysis about: text, the purpose of text, the setting of text, the audience of text, the relationship between reader and writer, the expectations and conventions and the requirements of texts, shared values, background knowledge and understanding of text, intertextuality, the tone of text, assessment criteria followed by intercommunication of discourse community as proposed by Johns (1997). The context analysis on the disciplinary assignment through the active role of students as researcher is necessary. This would sensitize students what to do and what not to do in the learning activities. Furthermore, being well-informed on ethnographic writing, the study of academic practices in the university, is salient. This can be done, one of them, through the interview with the lecturer of a specific course as well as to some extent negotiate the academic practices. This positions the students as an active agent in learning. Keywords: Student as Researcher, Context Analysis, Ethnographic Writing, Genre

Abstract

This research is about translingual practice in a digital context (social media), namely the Indonesian infotainment’s Instagram @folkative account. This research is essential because translingual practice increasingly influences social media interaction in this globalized era, enriching cross-cultural expression and creating a digital presence. This qualitative research aims to analyze the pattern(s) of translingual practice and how these patterns are/are applied in the mentioned account. Three theories, Canagarajah’s (2013a) translingual practice theory are used as the core theory, Zappavigna’s (2021) theory of discourse and social media, and Barton’s and Lee’s (2013) theory of computer-mediated communication (CMC) as the supporting theories. The results of this study demonstrate that translingual practice in the @folkative account suggests a complex negotiation process showing the fluidity of languages and the fluidity of interactional modalities. Moreover, digital translingual practice also contains a basic norm of translingual practice: breaking language boundaries, social justice, emotional effect, and social subjectivity. We suggest that future research could broaden the scope of digital platforms to blogs, websites, or online news platforms in order to get a broader and deeper understanding of digital translingual practices.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of emojis in expressing users' political identity in @ussfeed's Instagram comment section, focusing on the types of emojis used, their linguistic functions, and the representation of socio-political identity. Using a qualitative approach, this study integrates Berger's (2010) semiotic theory and Huddy's (2001) Social Identity theory and enriches its analysis with a cyberpragmatics perspective (Yus, 2011) to examine comments related to political issues in the January- April 2024 period. The results reveal that emojis play an important role in enriching textual meaning by adding visual and emotional dimensions, with icons as the most dominant emoji type that reflects various semiotic functions in conveying literal, contextual, and abstract meanings. From a cyberpragmatics perspective, emojis function as a means of digital identity construction where users strategically choose certain emojis to express political affiliation (ingroup) while differentiating themselves from other groups (outgroup). This research provides valuable new insights into how emojis have become an effective communication tool in the digital age while highlighting their role in identity formation in online public spaces and their impact on social interaction and self-representation in the digital world. At the end of this article, the author adds limitations of research and suggestions for future research.

Abstract

The difficulty of bilingual practice at one of the Islamic Boarding Colleges (Mahad Al Jamiah) institutions in East Java is a clear indication of the mahasantri’s (students’) lack of confidence. The language policy known as “yaumul-fannil-lughawi” provides mahasantri with the chance to practice bilingualism in the Mahad environment.  They have different perspectives and ways of thinking, and mahasantri can respond differently. These conditions cause resistance among the mahasantri in Mahad towards implementing multilingual practices. As such, it is imperative to scrutinize the language policy practices in Mahad, specifically, the conclusions and answers about positive, neutral, and negative language practices. According to this study, other factors have also contributed to the successful improvement of Mahad’s language environment, in addition to the implementation of yaumul-fannil-lughawi (language policy). There are still many mahasantri who lack confidence in their language skills. The fact that some mahasantri hide in the toilet as a means of protest shows that the (language policy) has not succeeded in ensuring that every mahasantri is satisfied. Hence, the multilingual practice in Mahad demonstrates that the bilingual language policy is not being correctly implemented, despite it being in place. There needs to be mature collaboration in designing a language program.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how news outlets construct discourse about Indonesia’s new capital (IKN) in North Penajam Paser, East Kalimantan. The researchers employed Stibbe's (2015) ecolinguistic framework. The problem lies in the contrasting views between stakeholders and indigenous communities of East Kalimantan toward such development. Therefore, this study bridges the gap by discovering how both parties defend their stances: “Is IKN an ideal project or not?” This study adopted a textual analysis technique, with relevant data collected from Al Jazeera, CNN, and Tempo.co between January 18, 2022, and March 19, 2025. The researchers used a note-taking technique and mapped each text onto Stibbe's (2015) ecolinguistic stories of ideology, framing, evaluation, and identity. Furthermore, the researchers classified each text based on modal verbs such as “should,” “must,” and “will,” adjectives such as “good” or “bad,” and phrasal nouns such as “environmental activists.” The results show that the story of evaluation appears more frequently, accentuating people’s negative responses, evidenced by terms such as “haunting,” “miserable lives,” and “shrinking.” The researchers affirm that the news media tend to report narratives of a conflict between neoliberal agendas (the government) and ecological sustainability (indigenous tribes of East Kalimantan).
