Abstract

The use of classroom experiment as teaching method in economic courses is increasing overtime. However, it is not widely used in developing world. In the experiment, students can learn using their own experience how economic agents behave and how they make decisions in a certain situation setting. This paper aims to describe the advantage of the method, practical issues in conducting classroom experiment, and examples of two classrooms experimental games in natural resource and environmental economics course: a public goods game and a CPR (common pool resource) game. In the games we introduce different rules of the game to give an understanding the impact of different rules of the game to the result of the game. We also discussed the relation between individual characteristics and his/her decision in the game. Keywords: classroom experiment, public goods game, CPR (common-pool resource) game, natural resource and environmental economics

Abstract

One of the main objectives of the establishment of a conservation area is to preserve the ecosystem and biodiversity. Even in many countries around the world, including Indonesia, the establishment of conservation areas has become the government's alternative strategy for protecting and maintaining biodiversity resources. The government allocates budget for conservation areas, but in some locations degradation and deforestation still persist. It is therefore important to evaluate the commitment of the government to the protection of biodiversity, one of which is the rate of deforestation. This study aims to examine whether government spending has impact to control deforestation in conservation areas in Indonesia. Utilizing a dynamic panel model with a Generalized Method of Moment (GMM) estimation, this study uses the forest cover data in 43 national parks that lies in 114 districts/cities during 2013-2017. The results show that the government spending for forest protection activities and forest ranger has an effect on controlling the deforestation rate in conservation area. However, there is no evidence showing correlation between the spending for community empowerment to deforestation control. This indicates that the government should consider budget allocation to make deforestation control more effective.

Abstract

The empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) has recently attracted the attention of the Indonesian government. Several initiatives have been made to empower their life, especially the establishment of Act No. 8/2016 which enhances their right to inclusive economic activities. This study aims to map PWD in Indonesian labor market. Specifically, it analyzes the characteristics of employed and unemployed PWD. It explored Labor Force Survey (Sakernas), which began to concern on disability issue in 2016. The results show that PWD prevalence varies highly among provinces led by West Sumatera, East Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi and that PWD has lower labor participation rate than that of PWOD. It may indicate the significant presence of discouraged workers among PWD.

Abstract

Abstract

Purpose – With the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there has been growing attention towards food-wasting behaviors under the public and scientific domain due to its strong economic, environmental, and social consequences. However, educational institutions–which are expected to implement ethical consumption behaviors–still face various challenges to implement it. Hence, the study aims to identify the determinants influencing food-wasting behavior amongst university students in Indonesia.Methodology – The study employed a quantitative research method, in which primary data from 780 students from Universitas Indonesia is analyzed using the logistic regression model. The main variables used are eating disciplines (proxies of intergenerational value variable), religiosity, and several socio-demographic factors.Findings  –  The study found that current eating discipline, desire to educate/discipline future offspring on the habit of finishing food and meal planning significantly influence food-wasting behavior amongst university students. This implies the importance of intergenerational value transmission in influencing ethical consumption behavior. In contrast, despite being a religious country, no significant relationship was found between religiosity and food-wasting behavior. Types of university degrees and gender were also found to significantly influence food-wasting behavior.Practical implications – The findings implied that families and educational institutions should attempt to increase students’ awareness and induce a more positive value transmission towards ethical consumption behavior, including linking food-wasting behaviors to curriculum and religious teaching/practices. Furthermore, given the reciprocal nature of the intergenerational value transmission, higher awareness regarding food waste issues should encourage a more positive attitude and behavior of students and subsequently be used to influence their families, friends, and offspring in the future.Originality – While some studies have examined the connection between religiosity and ethical consumption behavior, few studies have attempted to assess the relationship between religiosity and individual food-wasting behavior at a collegiate level. This study tries to fill the gap in the context of the university in Indonesia.

Abstract

Title: Comparison of the Economic Value of Extractive and Non-Extractive Use of Sharks and Rays in Meulaboh, Takalar and Tanjung LuarMost of the use of sharks and rays in Indonesia is still largely extractive, specifically fishing. This has an impact on the threat to the existence of sharks and rays which is indicated by their population. Actually, there are other types of use, that is sharks and rays ecotourism. This study aims to compares the economic value of sharks and rays ecotourism with the economic value from extractive use, in target fishing locations, Meulaboh, Takalar and Tanjung Luar. The extractive economic value is obtained from the market value using MMAF Trade Recommendation Letter data, while non-extractive economic value is given the use value through the Travel Cost Method (TCM), and non-use value using Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). Data for calculating the economic value of non-extractive sharks and rays were collected using in depth interview with fisherman-traders the boat owners and dive operators, and online surveys for tourists (domestic and international), dive guides, and dive operators. The results showed that the ratio between fisheries value and recreation value estimation is 1:33, 1:28 and 1: 2.7 for Meulaboh, Takalar, and Tanjung Luar locations, respectively. These results prove that the potential value of sharks and rays recreation is greater than the fisheries value. This study recommends shark and ray ecotourism as an alternative for sharks and rays fishing activities in locations where they are targeted for capture.

Abstract

Abstract

Fishing is one of the occupations with a significant risk of occupational accidents, which is compounded by the advent of health problems resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. Both of these risks can lower fisher’s earnings and affect their welfare. This research aims to examine how insurance ownership affected the degree of welfare among Indonesian fishers during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The author uses two different datasets from the National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas) and applies the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) approach to address the research questions. The PSM method, one of the quasi-experiments approaches, ensures a causal relationship between the dependent variable and the independent variable. The fisher’s household expenditures serve as a proxy for its revenue, hence the greater the value, the more prosperous the fisher’s household. According to the study’s findings, owning health and occupational accident insurance can raise household expenses for fishers, which indicates that insurance ownership may have an impact on the degree of the well-being of Indonesian fishers. Furthermore, it was discovered by this study that the advantages enjoyed by a fisher in Western Indonesia and Eastern Indonesia differed significantly. Another finding is that the percentage of fishers in Indonesia who were covered by insurance was still relatively low. On the other hand, the value of the benefits that come with insurance ownership in fisher’s households is relatively high. As a result, the best advice that can be provided to the government of Indonesia is to encourage insurance ownership on the part of the fishers.
