Abstract

ABSTRACTThe existence of young children is estimated to increase the reservation wages of a mother, this can reduce the possibility of their work participation in entering the labor market. This study aims to determine the effect of childcare price on the work participation of women who are married in Indonesia. Estimation of labor participation in this study uses a bivariate probit model in whichdecisions on work decisions are taken simultaneously with decisions on the choice of care type for women who are married. Because not all mothers in the sample work and use paid childcare, childcare wages and prices are estimated for all mothers. To overcome the sample selection bias, the two-stage Heckman method was used. The results of this study indicate that the price ofchildcare negatively affects the work participation of married women. Which means that if there is an increase in the price of caring a child, it will reduce the work participation of married women.Kata Kunci: Partisipasi kerja wanita, harga mengasuh anak

Abstract

There is possibility of bias in previous study about impact of minimum wages on labor absorption in formal and informal sectors because it has not yet accommodated the spatial effects of inter-regional labor market dependencies. This study aims to examine impact increasing of minimum wage on labor absorption in formal and informal sector without spatial effects then compared with if there are spatial effects. Without spatial effect, the model used is panel model and with spatial effect, model used is Panel Spatial Auto-Regressive model. The dependent variable used is labor absorption in formal sector relative to informal sector, whereas the independent variable is the real minimum wage in the form of the natural logarithm. The result of both models showed that increasing of minimum wage significantly reduced the labor absorption of formal sector relative to informal sector. Coefficient value of the impact increasing of minimum wage produced by the spatial model is greater than the non-spatial model whereas from the model criteria results show better spatial model, so it can be concluded there is underestimate in the previous study which does not take into account the spatial dependencies of the labor market.

Abstract

This research studies the technical efficiency of Tax Offices (KPP) in Indonesia by applying stochastic frontier analysis model. Observation was in the form of data aggregation at the level of province to all Tax Offices in Indonesia, besides those within the scopes of the Large Taxpayer Regional Office and Jakarta Special Regional Offices for approximately seven years (from 2010 to 2016). Results of the analysis show different rates of technical efficiency in inter-provinces taxation. Analysis on the efficiency determinants reveals a number of internal factors contributing to the technical efficiency of taxation, like the audit effort and external factors, such as community education level. Increase on these two can improve the efficiency and productivity of tax offices.

Abstract

This study aims to see whether appreciation and depreciation have asymmetric impact on Indonesia's industrial exports and which impact is greater. The researcher uses disaggregated panel of Indonesian industrial product export HS Code 10 digit level with all partner country of export. Acquired domestic appreciation has a negative impact and depreciation has a positive impact on exports, where the impact is both asymmetric. The negative impact of appreciation is greater than the positive impact of depreciation. While domestic appreciation, export demand is more elastic due to competition in international markets which makes other countries turn to domestic products in their destination countries or even import goods from other countries and export supply less elastic or less elasticity due to avoiding risk due to reduced export demand even though the price of imported goods is cheaper. Meanwhile, when the depreciation due to competition in the international market resulted in an increase in elasticity of export demand is smaller than when domestic appreciation occurs. In addition, the export supply become more elastic as the industry sees imported goods becoming more expensive which can increase production costs.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze empirically the impact of adoption of certified seeds on household cost efficiency of seasonal horticultural cultivation. This study uses data  from Cost Structure of Horticultural Cultivation Household Survey  (SOUH) 2018, Statictics Indonesia. The cost inefficiency variable is estimated using a one-step stochastic frontier. The results of the descriptive data show that labor costs are the biggest costs in the seasonal horticultural cultivation. On average, the proportion of households that adopt certified seed is still lower than households that do not adopt certified seed. In addition, the cost composition between adopters and non-adopters is different. The results of the stochastic frontier analysis show that the adoption of certified seeds has a positive effect on cost inefficiency, meaning that the adoption of certified seeds actually increases cost inefficiency/reduces cost efficiency. The impact of adopting certified seeds has not yet been felt by farmers because it has not lasted long.

Abstract

Illegal cigarettes are very dangerous, both for health and for state revenue, so DJBC, as the agency authorized to oversee the circulation of cigarettes, must catch illegal cigarettes to suppress the circulation of illegal cigarettes in the future. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of supervision, excise tariffs, and minimum HJE limits on illegal cigarette catches in Indonesia. The authors carried out a descriptive analysis of the realization of supervision budget data, number of DJBC employees, excise rates, minimum retail selling price limits, and catches of illegal cigarettes. The authors obtained these data from the Directorate General of Customs and Excise and from the Central Bureau of Statistics. The result is that the increase in excise rates and the minimum HJE limit in Indonesia so far have not had a significant impact on illegal cigarette catches. The only thing the government can do to suppress the circulation of illegal cigarettes is to strengthen supervision by increasing the supervision budget and human resources, both in terms of quantity and quality. Tightening the overall supervision will be able to optimize the catch of illegal cigarettes and reduce the circulation of illegal cigarettes in the future.

Abstract

Abstract

Sierra Leone experiences a persistent trade deficit problem. Currently, there is a vacuum in the literature employing recent data and suitable approaches to address the issue of non-stationarity and dynamic interaction between macroeconomic variables in influencing the trade deficit in Sierra Leone. This study examines the relationship between Sierra Leone's trade balance, inflation, and exchange rate using quarterly data from 2005 Q1 to 2023 Q3. The focus is on understanding how the exchange rate and inflation impact Sierra Leone's trade balance in both the short and long term. To achieve this, the study utilizes the VAR/VECM model to depict the dynamic interaction between the trade balance, exchange rate, and inflation. It also employs Granger Causality analysis to determine the most appropriate ordering among the macroeconomic variables in the model and Impulse Response Function (IRF) analysis to test the hypotheses regarding the trade balance response to exchange rate shocks and inflation. The empirical results confirm the existence of cointegration, indicating a long-term balance between the trade balance, exchange rate, inflation, and other macroeconomic variables such as GDP growth and interest rate differentials. Moreover, the dynamic prediction analysis using the IRF method supports the J-curve hypothesis in Sierra Leone and suggests that inflation can reduce the performance of the trade balance. These findings highlight the need for Sierra Leone to implement a comprehensive strategy to adjust the exchange rate and curb inflation to improve the trade balance and enhance external economic stability.

Abstract

This research focuses on when the General Election Commission (KPU) issued KPU Regulation (PKPU) Number 20/2018 on the Nomination of Members of the House of Representatives, Provincial House of Representatives, and Regency/City Regional House of Representatives. This PKPU is the “PKPU on Candidates of Former Corruption Convicts." This regulation is controversial, causing polemics and dividing the community between the pros and cons. Various accusations were directed at the KPU, even accusations conveyed by the closest colleague, the Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), which requested that the KPU obey higher regulations and ended in the Adjudication of Election Process Disputes. The peak of public distrust was the Judicial Review in the Supreme Court. Researchers use the Image Repair Theory to analyze an organization's response when its positive image and reputation are threatened. This research uses a postpositivist paradigm. Based on the research paradigm, the type and nature of this research are descriptive and qualitative. Data was collected using observation, interview, documentation, and literature study techniques. The results of the study showed that of the five crisis communication strategies, KPU used typologies, namely denial (simple denial, shift blame), evade responsibility (provocation, good intentions), and reduce offensiveness (bolstering, minimization, differentiation, transcendence, attack accuser). Four (4) typologies that are not used are defeasibility, accident, compensation, and mortification

Abstract

The global population will soon be in the aging phase due to the rapid growth of the elderly population aged 60 years and over. The biggest problems experienced by the elderly group are health problems and economic problems. So that the elderly, especially the poor, need not only health insurance, but also cash and non-cash social assistance to maintain and improve their health conditions. This study aims to determine how the effect of social assistance received by the household on the health condition of the elderly in the household. The method used in this research is descriptive analysis and quantitative analysis with bivariate probit model. The data used is cross sectional data from the March 2021 National Social and Economic Survey. The results show that social assistance PKH has negative effect on the health problem condition of the elderly. Meanwhile, the other independent variables showed that they also has negative effect on the health problem condition of the elderly, such as housing conditions, education, the ratio of hospital beds to the population, and the characteristics of the head of the household.
