Abstract

This study examines the concept of the eternity of the world (qidam al-‘ālam) in the perspective of Muslim philosophers and its critique in Tahafut al-Falasifah by Imam al-Ghazali. The research aims to analyze the differences between al-Farabi and Ibn Sina, who argue that the universe is temporally eternal through the theory of emanation (al-fayḍ), and the Islamic theological view which affirms that the world was created out of nothing (ḥudūṡ al-‘ālam). This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, using descriptive-analytical and comparative-critical analysis. The primary source is Tahafut al-Falasifah, supported by relevant secondary literature. The findings indicate that the philosophers conceive the relationship between God and the world as a necessary and eternal causal relation, implying that the universe has no temporal beginning, although it remains ontologically dependent upon God. In contrast, al-Ghazali rejects this necessity and asserts that God is a voluntary agent (fā‘il mukhtār) who creates the world through His free will. This debate has had a significant impact on the development of Islamic theology and philosophy, particularly in defining the respective roles of reason and revelation in addressing metaphysical questions.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the causes of social conflict between the Mandailing and Minangkabau ethnic groups in Padang Lawas. It raises two main questions: what are the causes of the conflict, and how is the conflict managed? This study employs a qualitative approach with a field research design, while the data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings show that the conflict stems from clashes in communication culture, cultural differences, acculturation in interethnic marriages, and domination of the economic sphere as sources of intergroup tension. As a result, equal and dialogical social integration has failed to develop. In certain contexts, the Minangkabau ethnic group, as migrants, is perceived as not having fully assimilated into the local customs and culture of the Mandailing community, thereby creating social distance, prejudice, and stereotypes that continue to be reproduced in everyday interactions. On the other hand, interethnic marriage often becomes an arena of identity negotiation laden with cultural pressures, while domination in the economic sector further reinforces social boundaries between the two groups. This article emphasizes that social conflict in a plural society is not merely the result of ethnic difference itself, but rather the product of disrupted communication, fragile acculturation, and unequal power relations. Therefore, conflict resolution requires a more transformative cultural approach through cultural dialogue, the strengthening of social empathy, and the reconstruction of more inclusive interethnic relations. These findings demonstrate that without fair management of pluralism, diversity can easily shift from being a social asset into a latent source of social fragmentation.

Abstract

Javanese ethnic in Asahan have a unique way to reduce conflict, for example by adopting the "jothaan" attitude or avoiding communication with the disputing parties. They also apply the concept of "nglurug tanpa bala, menang tanpa ngasorake," which encourages a wise resolution of conflict without humiliating the opposing party. This approach aims to maintain the honor of the opponent and avoid the emergence of resentment that can be passed on to the next generation. Javanese families adhere to the concept of dwi tunggal, namely joint power between the father and mother, although the final decision is usually in the hands of the father, which makes this system considered paternalistic. The wife plays an important role, especially in managing the household economy, making her position equal to her husband. This research is a case study using a holistic qualitative approach. With this approach, the emphasis of the study is on providing an explanation of a social phenomenon using other social phenomena and cultural elements that exist and apply in the community concerned. The purpose of this study is to determine the ecological mapping of Javanese families in the Muslim plantation employee community in Asahan Regency. As well as the dynamics of the quality of family functioning in Javanese families in the Muslim plantation employee community in Asahan Regency. From this study it was found that the ecology of Javanese families in the plantation employee community in Asahan Regency experienced changes that were not linear in historical sequence because political geography factors played a role in determining the pattern of community production.

Abstract

The current global ecological crisis reflects not only material environmental degradation but also a profound spiritual crisis of modern humanity. This article aims to analyze the concept of theophany in the thought of Seyyed Hossein Nasr as a metaphysical foundation for establishing an ecological ethic rooted in Islamic spirituality. The study employs a philosophical-interpretative approach with a qualitative hermeneutic method, reviewing primary and secondary literature, including Nasr’s major works. Thematic and hermeneutic analyses reveal the ontological, epistemological, ethical, and socio-theological dimensions of theophanic perspectives on nature. Findings indicate that, for Nasr, all reality manifests God (theophany), making nature a reflection of the Divine presence that must be safeguarded with moral and spiritual responsibility. Modern ecological crises arise from the loss of theophanic awareness, leading to the exploitation of nature without recognition of its sacred dimension. Restoring human consciousness to a sacred cosmic order positions theophany as the foundation of ecological ethics that integrates faith, knowledge, and daily practices. This study underscores that addressing environmental crises requires not only technological or policy interventions but a spiritual revolution that affirms humanity’s cosmic relationship with God and creation. The article contributes to the development of contemporary Islamic ecological philosophy and offers a conceptual framework for environmentally responsible practices grounded in transcendent values.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the subjective experience of spiritual happiness among members of the Pengajian Tauhid at Jalan Suluh, Gang Sabir No. 2, Medan City. The research focuses exclusively on participants’ lived experiences derived from tauhid teachings as conveyed through lectures by the preacher (mualim). Employing Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study explores the lived experience of both long-standing senior members and younger participants, each bringing distinct life challenges. Data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with purposively selected key informants who differed in their duration of involvement in the study circle.vFindings reveal four superordinate themes that constitute their spiritual happiness: (1) inner tranquility, (2) emotional stability, (3) discovery of life direction, and (4) the role of the majelis as a protective social identity fortress against negative peer influences. These experiential elements mutually reinforce one another, producing a holistic lived experience. Participants describe spiritual happiness as a profound sense of peace accompanied by a firm conviction that Allah will always provide a “way out” from every life difficulty.vThe study concludes that tauhid-centred religious study circles can serve as powerful spaces for cultivating spiritual well-being, offering an authentic expression of life’s meaning rooted in Allah that effectively alleviates existential anxiety, fortifies the self against harmful influences, and enables adaptive emotional self-regulation in the face of modern existential challenges.
