Abstract

This paper describes the thoughts of Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) about religion and democracy. Abducting Abdurrahman's thoughts about religion and democracy today is not only relevant, but important, especially in the midst of various radicalism issues that are currently being discussed today. The issue of radicalism which is generally directed at Muslims is suspected because of the desire of a group of Muslims to make Islam appear in its formal form in this country, in other words they want to make Indonesia an Islamic state. This desire which was opposed by Abdurrahman by considering the plurality of the nation, especially according to Abdurrahman, there is no standard provision of the state in Islam. By using library data, it is concluded that specifically in seeing the relationship between Islam and democracy there are three kinds of responses, namely integrative, facultative, and confrontational. In addition, Abdurrahman firmly said that Islam does not need to be present in a formal form in this country, just enough substance that is when Islamic values are realized in democracy, because the teachings of democracy do exist in Islam.

Abstract

Akhtar in his work entitled “The Quran and The Secular Mind” argues that Islam is unique in its decisions and capacity to face, rather than accommodate, the challenges of secular beliefs. Moreover, Islam does not have a preference for an established political system but only has a set of ethical values that can be used as guidelines for the administration of political life. This  became the basis of Shabbir Akhtar's philosophy to refer to Islam as a political religion, through the history of the Prophet Muhammad which was criticized by Kenneth Cragg in his books entitled “Muhammad and the Christian” (1984) and “Readings in the Quran” (1988).

The political system is defined as a collection or total of various activities in the country related to the public interest, including the process of determining goals, efforts to realize goals, making decisions, and preparing priority scales. . Political structure, as a result of these subsystems, can be divided into political infrastructure and political superstructure. Political infrastructure involves the basic elements that support the functioning of the political system, while political superstructure includes more complex elements and is related to providing authority and control. In this context, mechanisms are important to maintain the balance and functioning of a political system. Each political structure needs to interact with other political structures, based on the special functions that each structure has. In a country's political system, there are 2 (two) main components that run the wheels of government, namely political superstructure and political infrastructure. The political superstructure is the institutions mentioned in a country's constitution and which carry out executive, legislative and judicial functions and are tasked with making policies related to the public interest. Meanwhile, political infrastructure is a group of political forces in society that actively participates in influencing government policy as a form of democracy. Abstract

Modernization often brings changes to the social and cultural structure of a society. In the context of the Mandailing tribe's marriage customs, modernization can cause a shift in values that were previously considered sacred, such as the marriage process which is full of traditional ceremonies, to become simpler or influenced by more practical marriage practices and oriented towards modern trends. This shift can affect the way society views the importance of traditional ceremonies, or even cause a decrease in the interest of the younger generation to preserve these traditions. Marriage customs are not only related to rituals, but also to the cultural identity of the Mandailing tribe. This study aims to determine the effect of modernization on the marriage customs of the Mandailing tribe. The research method used is a qualitative method. The data collection techniques are observation, interviews and documentation. From this study it was found that modernization has brought significant changes to the way customs are carried out, especially in terms of marriage ceremonies. In the Mandailing tribe, marriage customs have a series of rituals that are quite long and involve various parties, such as makkobar which takes a long time. Modernization causes the marriage ceremony to be simplified or eliminate some traditional elements.
