Abstract

Drug abuse in Indonesia remains a serious problem, including in East Kalimantan, which is recognized as one of the regions with high vulnerability. This article aims to analyze the situation of drug abuse in East Kalimantan based on seminar data and supporting literature, while also examining prevention strategies. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using primary data from the Seminar and Declaration of Drug-Free Students: “Smart Generation, Stay Away from Drugs” as well as secondary data from publicly accessible reports of the National Narcotics Board (BNN), the Narcotics Directorate of the East Kalimantan Regional Police, and academic articles. The analysis shows that the teenager age group (13–25 years) constitutes the largest proportion of drug users in East Kalimantan. Geographic factors as a transit area, urbanization, and weak social control exacerbate drug circulation in the region. Preventive efforts should be directed toward community-based strategies involving families, schools, local communities, and government institutions. In conclusion, addressing drug abuse in East Kalimantan requires multi-actor collaboration to reduce the increasing rate of misuse.

Abstract

The phenomenon of celebrity divorce has become a highly discussed topic on social media, transforming from a private matter into a public phenomenon observed and internalized by young audiences. This study aims to understand how Generation Z interprets celebrity divorce news on social media and how such continuous exposure shapes their perceptions of marriage. Grounded in Albert Bandura’s Social Learning Theory, this research utilizes a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore these cognitive processes. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with ten unmarried Generation Z informants (aged 19–28) who actively consume celebrity news. Data analysis followed Creswell’s thematic stages. The findings reveal that Generation Z engages in observational learning by treating celebrities as symbolic models. Instead of imitating negative behaviors, informants practice selective modeling by adopting relational values they consider positive and ethical. Furthermore, social media comment sections function as vicarious reinforcement, offering moral validation that influences their assessment of relational ethics. The study also highlights the emergence of self-regulation in managing toxic media exposure, which contributes to a significant shift in their marriage values from romantic idealism to critical realism. These insights emphasize the need for strengthening critical digital literacy, safe-relationship education, and collaborative policies to promote healthier social norms.

Abstract

The relocation of Indonesia’s new capital (IKN) to East Kalimantan presents both opportunities and challenges for the agricultural sector as the foundation of national food security. Agricultural development in this emerging region requires an integrated approach, as food security depends not only on land availability and production capacity but also on supply stability, farmers’ access to inputs, and the long-term sustainability of local production systems. This article analyzes agricultural development strategies in the IKN area and its surrounding regions through a multi-stakeholder perspective involving government, farmers, academics, and students. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were obtained from a multi-stakeholder dialogue forum in Muara Ulu Jawa Village, Samboja District, as well as secondary data from government documents and academic sources. The findings reveal several key challenges, including limited productive land due to land conversion, shortages of subsidized fertilizers, insufficient agricultural extension officers, and inadequate farm road infrastructure. Stakeholders emphasized the need for farmland protection policies, improved fertilizer distribution, reclamation of former mining sites for new agricultural land, development of irrigation and farm roads, strengthening GAPOKTAN institutions, and increasing extension personnel. Local leaders also highlighted the urgency for IKN to achieve localized food self-sufficiency, considering that East Kalimantan currently meets only 30% of its food needs. Proposed strategies include increasing production, expanding farmland, modernizing agricultural equipment, stabilizing farm-gate prices, and enhancing farmers’ human resource capacity. Academics and students are expected to support farmer adaptation through knowledge transfer, field assistance, and applied research. This study concludes that agricultural development in IKN requires integrated, sustained collaboration among farmers, local governments, the IKN Authority, and universities to align production needs, input access, farmer welfare, and land protection. Such collaboration can position IKN’s agriculture as a long-term food security model for Eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract. Research examining Green Social Work (GSW) within extractive industries remains limited, particularly in understanding the relationships between Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), Social Impact Assessment (SIA), and indigenous governance systems. This research analyzes the application of Green Social Work (GSW) within the extractive context of East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach grounded in a critical paradigm, this study employs literature analysis and and field-based inquiry involving key informants from affected indigenous communities, village government officials, civil society actors, and extractive industry practitioners with a social work background. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of governance, environmental vulnerability, and community responses. The findings reveal that the implementation of ESG and SIA in extractive governance tends to be procedural and performative, emphasizing compliance and reporting mechanisms rather than substantive community empowerment and ecological justice. Four interrelated themes emerged from the analysis: performative sustainability governance, persistent socio-ecological vulnerability, extractive dependency, and the resilience of indigenous governance systems. Despite increasing sustainability commitments, communities continue to experience environmental degradation, social vulnerability, and limited participation in decision-making processes. At the same time, indigenous governance systems, particularly Umaq and Simpuk, demonstrate important capacities for environmental stewardship and collective accountability. This study further expands Green Social Work scholarship by integrating perspectives from Political Ecology and Indigenous Governance within extractive industry settings. The article offers an analytical framework that connects Green Social Work, ESG governance, and indigenous territorial governance as a basis for advancing ecological justice and community wellbeing in extractive regions. Keyword: Green Social Work; Extractive Industries; Political Ecology; East Kalimantan; Greenwashing; Indigenous Knowledge.

Abstract

Community-based tourism has become an important approach to sustainable cultural tourism development by emphasizing active local community involvement in tourism governance. However, previous studies indicate that participation in cultural tourism often remains consultative, while strategic decision-making is dominated by governments and external actors. Research examining indigenous participation in cultural tourism governance through a critical participation perspective remains limited, particularly among indigenous communities in Kalimantan, Indonesia. This study analyzes indigenous community participation in the development of Bena Baru Cultural Village, East Kalimantan, using Arnstein’s Ladder of Citizen Participation as an analytical framework. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving village officials, customary leaders, community leaders, youth groups, artists, and members of the Dayak Kenyah Badeng indigenous community. The findings indicate that participation is concentrated at the levels of manipulation, informing, consultation, and placation, reflecting a tokenistic pattern. Although indigenous communities are involved in deliberative forums, cultural activities, and tourism programs, their influence over strategic planning, budgeting, and policy formulation remains limited. Tourism governance is further shaped by top-down planning, weak participatory institutions, and unequal power relations between government actors and indigenous communities. Theoretically, this study contributes to community participation and Community-Based Tourism literature by demonstrating the relevance of Arnstein’s framework for understanding indigenous participation in cultural tourism governance. Practically, it highlights the need to strengthen collaborative governance mechanisms to enable more meaningful indigenous participation in sustainable cultural village development.
