Abstract

Abstract

Kebutuhan luas minimal hutan kota suatu kota sebaiknya dihitung berdasarkan keadaan demografi kota.

Abstract

Referring to the studies on the success of community forestry, the proponents suggest reducing the influence of the state to the people who maintain traditional institutions in forest management. However, knowledge about the interaction of formal and informal institutions in the context of changing smallholder farmers is still not fully understood. Through a phenomenological approach assessing the differences of forest conserving institutions’ performance across villages in Semende, South Sumatra, we analyze the process of how traditional institutions can survive or collapse. The main finding shows that traditional institutions gained support and legitimacy from government’s formal institutions, to enforce the rules, are able to survive until now. The key factor determining the success or failure of traditional institutions is the structure of community’s authority; whether it is based on to inherited knowledge or not. We propose a new hypothesis for the concept of local institutions that successfully manage natural resources.

Abstract

Abstract

The acrosome reaction (AR) is a crucial step in fertilization, enabling sperm to penetrate the oocyte's protective layers, but various elements can hinder AR. Fertilization is a fundamental process in mammalian reproduction, involving the fusion of a sperm with oocyte. To achieve this, sperm must undergo capacitation, a series of biochemical changes that prepare them for fertilization. Once capacitated, sperm can penetrate the protective layers of the oocyte, after capacitation, sperm bind to receptors on the zona pellucida (ZP), a protective layer surrounding the egg. This binding triggers the acrosome reaction (AR), releasing enzymes that help the sperm penetrate the protective layers. Once the sperm has penetrated, it fuses with the oocyte's plasma membrane, delivering its genetic material. Anti-sperm antibodies (ASA) can directly bind to sperm, hindering their function and ability to undergo AR. Chronic inflammation, often associated with conditions like diabetes and obesity, with chronic hyperglycemia producing advanced glycation end products (AGEs) can create a pro-inflammatory environment that negatively impacts sperm parameter and function. Additionally, gut microbiota (GM) dysbiosis has been linked to chronic inflammation and may contribute to infertility. Proper AR is essential for successful fertilization, but presence of ASA, GM dysbiosis, and chronic inflammation may hinder fertility. The evidence suggests improving inflammation by proper GM symbiosis may improve sperm parameter and fertility.

Abstract

Agroforests in many tropical countries have long been acknowledged as substantially necessary to contribute to biodiversity conservation and community livelihood. The importance of agroforest biodiversification is now overlooked and replaced by a simplified structure due to the impact of agricultural commercialization. Land use changes have occurred in the Upper Citarum Watershed over time, converting traditional agroforests into monoculture plantations at the expense of their socio-ecological function. This paper aimed to analyze land use change dynamics and the effect of biodiversity loss on the socio-economy aspect of the rural agricultural landscape in the Upper Citarum Watershed. We conducted a survey of 95 respondents of community farmers in the agricultural landscape in Sukapura and Resmi Tingal Village using questionnaire guidelines and direct interviews to gather information. There was a significant decrease in plant diversity in some plot agroforests, which, in the previous study, was dominant to be reduced even to local extinctions. The results also show that the farmer poverty index according to BPS criteria is 12.63% of respondents who are below the poverty line. Our results imply that preserving mixed-garden (talun) patches in a landscape dominated by cash-crop gardens is one of the strategies that could conserve landscape biodiversity and increasingly a sustainable livelihood.
