Abstract

Weekly Iron Folic Acid supplementation/WIFAS program for adolescent girls is an effective strategy for preventing anemia. However, in Indonesia, only 1,4% adhere to taking WIFAS. This study aimed to discover the factors related to adolescent girls’ adherence to consuming WIFAS in East Kalimantan. The design of this study was cross-sectional, using a purposive sampling technique to find a sample of 825 adolescent girls. The research location was the East Kalimantan Provincial Health Office from November 15 to December 15, 2021. The analytical method uses the Chi-Square test and binary logistic regression test. The results showed that the level of adherence to the consumption of iron folic acid for adolescents girl was 17,6%. The factors related to the adherence of adolescent girls in consuming WIFAS in East Kalimantan were the area of residence (p=0,023), hemoglobin check (р=0,0001), access to information on iron-folic acid (p=0,014), received/purchased iron-folic acid (p=0,000), knowledge (p=0,010) and the use of the Cegah Anemia Remaja Indonesia (CERIA) application (р=0,0001). Based on reg log analysis, factors such as having received/purchased iron WIFAS, Hb checks, knowledge, and use of the CERIA application were associated with adolescent girls’ adherence to WIFAS. In conclusion, adolescent girls with regular WIFAS consumption were easier to get WIFA, check Hb, have good knowledge and use the CERIA application. These findings suggest the need to carry out hemoglobin checks on adolescent girls, increase the availability of WIFAS and socialize the use of the CERIA app.

Abstract

Hypertension is a growing public health issue, particularly affecting individuals in productive age groups. The high incidence of hypertension in the North Sangatta Health Centre area highlights the need to identify contributing risk factors. This study aims to analyse determinants associated with hypertension among productive-age residents within the working area of the North Sangatta Health Centre. The method used in this study was an analytical observational approach with a case–control design. Data were collected using demographic questionnaires and blood pressure observation sheets. The research instruments were not subjected to validity and reliability testing because a digital sphygmomanometer that had been calibrated by the hospital and was used in accordance with standard operating procedures was utilized. The variables examined included demographic factors (age, sex, education, occupation), smoking habits, and medical history (familial hypertension and diabetes). The sampling technique used was non-random sampling, specifically purposive sampling, with a total of 136 respondents (68 cases and 68 controls). Data were analyzed using chi-square tests and logistic regression tests. Result: The findings indicated significant associations between hypertension and age (P < 0.000), diabetes (P < 0.001), and family history of hypertension (P = 0.009). No significant associations were found for gender (P = 0.859), occupation (P = 0.360), education (P = 0.069), or smoking habits (P = 0.170). Conclusion: It is concluded that age and specific medical and occupational factors play important roles in hypertension incidence in this population.

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) remained a public health problem in Bontang City. From January to December 2023, a total of 457 DHF cases were reported among 188,101 residents, with an incidence rate of 242.95 per 100,000 population and two deaths (Case Fatality Rate = 0.44%). This study aimed to identify factors associated with the occurrence of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever in the working area of Bontang Barat Public Health Center. An analytic observational study with a retrospective case control design was conducted. The study population consisted of all DHF cases reported from January to December 2023, totaling 128 cases. Using simple random sampling, 192 respondents were selected, comprising 96 cases and 96 controls. Cases were patients with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) confirmed by healthcare professionals, while the control group consisted of neighbors of the cases who agreed to participate and were matched by sex and residential area (±100 m). Data were collected from DHF surveillance records, interviews, observations, and measurements of housing density. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed a significant association between 3M Plus practices, the presence of mosquito larvae (p < 0.001), and the frequency of cleaning water storage containers (p = 0.001) with the occurrence of DHF. In contrast, housing density (p = 0.721) and the habit of hanging worn clothes (p = 0.771) were not associated with DHF incidence. Conclusion the occurrence of DHF was mainly influenced by behavioral and environmental factors therefore, strengthening community based 3M Plus prevention practices was identified as a key strategy for DHF control.
