Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The article aimed at understanding the dynamics within the encounter between Islam and tatali paranti karuhun, the local religion as the central source of spirituality and cultural practices of Kasepuhan Ciptagelar living on the Halimun Salak National park, West Java. The tradition is rooted in Pre-Islamic Sundanese culture that is often placed as the part of Sunda Wiwitan belief, which is, as the other local beliefs in Indonesia, not being recognized as the official religion. On the other hand, although have been inhabiting the area forhundred years the establishment of national park have placed the people as the illegal settler within the state’s forest. Thus, there are two pressures for the people; the freedom to practice their local tradition rooted in a local belief which is different from the majority group and the limited legal access toward their customary land. Fortunately, Kasepuhan Ciptagelar is blessed by various tourism resources, both in the term of eco-tourism and cultural tourism rooted in the authenticity of Sundanese culture. In this case, the study offers new insight that the arrival of tourism has given the opportunity for the people to strengthen their cultural identity and the legal access toward the customary land. The ethnographic research through participant observation to gather the primary data reveals that tourism has effectively mediated the encounter between Islam, local belief and the struggle to re-claim the customary land.

Abstract

This study identifies the interplay between the engagement of Kasepuhan Ciptagelar, an indigenous community inhabiting the state forest in West Java, and tourism development in the area. Practising local spirituality rooted in an indigenous belief, tatali paranti karuhun, while administratively accepting Islam, the people have been struggling to deal with the nearby majority Sundanese who practices Islam and the establishment of the national park covering their living space. The study considers whether a minority group living in an area endowed with both natural and cultural tourism resources consciously chooses tourism as a selected ground to deal with policies which neglect them in terms of religious practices and land policy. Employing the ethnographic method, the study reveals that contesting identity in tourism also means the readiness to accommodate various outside elements. However, the strategy has led the Halimun Salak National Park authority to declare the area as a “special status area” for cultural tourism inside the state park since 2017. The study findings show that after engaging with tourism, various rituals and art performances rooted in the old Sundanese spirituality, which is not officially recognized by the state, can be freely performed for the sake of tourists. In this case, the community is not passive in dealing with external forces but has also enabled its own silent productivity, including its varying consequences.

Abstract

AbstractBefore the outbreak of the Pandemic Covid-19, together with a better economic and political relationship between Indonesia and Japan, the number of Indonesian visitors to Japan for several different purposes has significantly increased and vice versa. It has opened a bigger opportunity for the development of cultural understanding to each other through more intensive direct encounters and people-to-people direct communication, both in Japan and Indonesia.  The article focuses on describing the image of contemporary Japan from the point of view of the Indonesian visiting Japan. Employing a qualitative approach through serial fieldwork in Hokkaido and Tokyo, research findings show that witnessing the daily behavior of the Japanese in their home country and directly interacting with the host community through tourism grounds have shaped a new better image of contemporary Japan and the Japanese. It proves the role of tourism in increasing the better cultural understanding between two different cultural groups, including those inheriting a bitter memory from a particular conflict in the past. Abstract

Humans are ancient creatures who live in the modern era; human evolution is closely related to the evolution of the natural surroundings. The concept of human connection to nature tradition of going into the forest is known almost throughout Asia by various names; in Japan, the ancient tradition of forest walks to reduce tension and mental fatigue is called Shinrin-yoku, translated in English as Forest Bathing. In ancient Bali, there was a tradition of spending one of the four stage of live (catur asrama) dealing with the forest, known as Vanaprastha. Bali have a great potential to develop eco-tourism and has no shortage of wellness retreats. This qualitative exploratory study, attempts to synthesize the concepts of forest bathing, ecotourism, wellness, and vanaprastha, as an initial proposal to mini theory development, with a typical qualitative approach adopting the five-phased cycle of data compilation, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting and concluding. Utilizing manual data analysis procedures. This study manages to disassemble concepts of the phenomena, subtract them down into distinctive elements, then reassemble the intersected elements into themes, to be then made into compounds to be interpreted and arranged as a new concept of sustainable nature and forest-based tourism aimed at improving the health of tourists through cultural healing while accelerating the capacity building of the host community on economic sustainability – practices that are geared towardslong-term economic growth, which minimize adverse impacts to social, environmental, and cultural aspects of the community.
