Abstract

Abstract

ABSTRACT Patients undergoing prolonged immobilization or bed rest are at high risk for developing pressure ulcers (decubitus). Decubitus occurs due to continuous pressure, especially over bony prominences. Preventive nursing interventions such as effleurage massage with olive oil and regular repositioning are essential in maintaining skin integrity. This study aims to determine the effect of effleurage massage with olive oil and repositioning on the prevention of pressure ulcers in bed rest. This quantitative study used a pre-experimental design (one-group pretest-posttest). A total of 18 patients were selected using purposive sampling. The intervention included effleurage massage with olive oil and repositioning every 2 hours, administered over four consecutive days, twice a day. Data were collected using skin assessment forms and a pressure ulcer risk scale. Data were analyzed using the Paired t-test. There was a significant reduction in the risk of pressure ulcers after the intervention with effleurage massage and repositioning (p 0.05). Effleurage massage with olive oil and repositioning is effective in preventing pressure ulcers in bedridden patients. This intervention is recommended as a part of preventive nursing care in inpatient wards.  Keywords: Pressure Ulcer, Bedrest, Effleurage Massage, Olive Oil, Repositioning ABSTRAK Pasien bedrest memiliki risiko tinggi mengalami dekubitus akibat tekanan terus-menerus pada area tubuh tertentu.

Abstract

Background: The quarter-life crisis (QLC), typically occurring during emerging adulthood, represents a prolonged emotional struggle that may lead to adverse outcomes such as stress, anxiety disorders, and depression. Purpose: To examine the correlation between Islamic religiosity and self-concept with QLC among undergraduate students. Method: A quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach was employed, involving 82 students. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed through univariate and bivariate techniques, with Spearman’s rank correlation applied. Results: The majority of respondents were 21 years old (52.43%), female (82.93%), and enrolled in public schools (79.27%). Most demonstrated moderate Islamic religiosity (70.73%), particularly in spiritual experiences (mean = 37.41). All students reported a positive overall self-concept, with role performance (97.56%) being the strongest dimension. Statistical analysis revealed no significant relationship between Islamic religiosity and QLC (p = 0.152, r = –0.160). However, a significant negative correlation was found between self-concept and QLC (p = 0.001, r = –0.440). While religiosity components such as spiritual experiences, consequences, and worship practices were moderately expressed, they did not significantly influence QLC. In contrast, negative aspects of self-concept—including body image, ideal self, self-esteem, role performance, and personal identity—were significantly associated with QLC. Conclusion: Self-concept was moderately and inversely associated with quarter-life crisis, whereas Islamic religiosity was not significantly associated with quarter-life crisis. The cross-sectional design does not establish causality.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major non-communicable disease with a continuously increasing global prevalence. Psychological stress is a modifiable risk factor associated with impaired glucose regulation; however, public awareness of stress management remains limited. This study aimed to determine the effect of structured deep breathing education on adults' deep breathing skills as a non-pharmacological approach to support DM risk reduction. A quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted among 43 adults selected through purposive sampling in Kebayoran Lama Selatan, South Jakarta. Participants received education and guided practice in slow deep breathing, and their skills were assessed using an observation checklist before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The median skill score increased from 26 (Q1–Q3: 25–31) before the intervention to 40 (Q1–Q3: 31–43) after the intervention. A statistically significant improvement was observed (Z = −4.863, p < 0.001), with a large effect size (r = 0.742). Structured deep breathing education significantly improved participants' ability to perform the technique correctly. These findings suggest that deep breathing education may serve as a simple complementary nursing intervention to support stress management as part of DM risk reduction strategies.
