Abstract

ABSTRACT The problem of the study was “What are the types, meanings, and functions used in novel ‘Koala Kumal’ by Raditya Dika?” The objectives of the study were to find out the types, meanings, and functions of code mixing used in novel “Koala Kumal” by Raditya Dika. This study mainly aimed to describe code mixing found in novel “Koala Kumal”. The writer used a qualitative descriptive method to classify and analyze the data. The data were analyzed through some steps including identification, classification, reduction, description, and conclusion. After the data were analyzed, the writer found the types, the meanings, and the functions of code mixing in novel “Koala Kumal”. The types of code mixing that were found in novel “Koala Kumal” were insertion of word (112 words) and phrase (53 phrases), alternation (4 clauses), and congruent lexicalization (3 words). Denotative meanings (170 words and phrases) and connotative meanings (65 words, phrases, and clauses) were found in novel “Koala Kumal”. The functions of code mixing which found were to involve the topic of conversation (146 words and phrases), adapt with new participant (21 words, phrases, and clauses), and express solidarity (5 words). In summary, code mixing which is used by Raditya Dika in his novel had the purpose to inform and convey the topic which Raditya talk about, then to express his feeling, and also to measure the level of solidarity among the relationship between Raditya Dika with other people in intimate and distance relationship. Abstract

This research aimed to analyzing the types of slang word that found in Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018) movie. The research method is qualitative approach, which is the researcher analyze the movie based on the theory by Allan and Burridge (2006) about the slang words that used as references. Technique of analyze the data is by watching the movie and transcribe the dialogue from movie. The results of the research showing there are four types of slang word that found in the Ralph Breaks the Internet movie. Moreover, there are 50 slang words types that the researcher found based on the Allan and Burridge theory included fresh and creative (24), immitative (17), flippant (7) and clipping (2). The most dominant of slang word is fresh and creative, which means there is so many new vocabulary from old words used or actually a brand new word that spoken by its character. The meaning of slang words that found in the movie is various, but those slang words are mostly used in informal situations. In conclusion, hopefully this research can be the one of the references for the other researchers. Keywords: Language, Linguistic, Movie, Slang

Abstract

This research aimed to identify students’ challenges and strategies in learning English for the fourth semester of English education study program at STKIP PGRI Lubuklinggau. The method used qualitative survey in this research. The population and sample or research subject were 32 students taken by simple random sampling total sample were 16 students. Data collection by using questionnaire and interview. Technique for analyzing the data used findings the result of percentage. The result of this research were trigger students ability, Second, made students think about English, Third, made students improving students’ skills, Fourth, made learning easier andFive, as students’ motivation in learning English. In conclusion, the challenges is very important for students in learning English because it can help students easier in learning English. Keywords: Challenges, Learning English, Strategies

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out validity, practicality, and effectiveness of a developed book entitled Developing Local Based Content Supplementary Reading Material for Senior High School in Lubuklinggau. In conducting the research, Research and Development written by Branch (2009) consisting of analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (ADDIE) was used as steps in developing the product meanwhile Formative Evaluation written by Tessmer (1993) was used to evaluate the data. To determine the validity of the book, three experts were included to review the product namely content expert, instructional design expert, and layout quality expert. To determine the practicality and effectiveness of the product, three students were involved in one-to-one trial, sixt students were involved in small group trial, and ten students were involved in a field test. The practicality and effectiveness values were obtained from tenth grade students in Senior High School number 1 Lubuklinggau in academic year 2021-2022 which were taken as subjects of the research. To collect the data, questionnaire, interviews, and a test were used. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively for the interview and quantitatively by using average score for the questionnaire and the test. After all data had been analyzed, it could be concluded that the product as a book was categorized highly valid with average score 3.76, categorized very highly practical with average score 4.67 at one-to-one trial and 4.32 at small group trial, and categorized very highly effective with average score 90.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic past years is a big challenge for education worldwide because education has to be done virtually to stop the spread of the COVID-19. Diverse geographical conditions in Indonesia consisting of highlands, valleys, lowlands, mountains and some areas that are far away from cities make students difficult to connect to the internet and thus, virtual teaching is challenging. One form of learning that is able to develop independence student learning is blended learning, this learning model combines online and offline learning. This form of learning model enable students to learn effectively and efficiently, more easy access to teaching materials, and ultimately increase independence student learning because learning is done independently. This study concludes that blended learning can be considered as an efficient approach of distance learning in terms of students’ learning experience, student-student interaction as well as student instructor interaction and is likely to emerge as the predominant education model in the future. Abstract

The research aims to explain the pragmatic competence of Col language speakers who live in Lubuklinggau. The subject of the research is 20 Col language speakers who live in Lubuklinggau and are learning or have learnt English for at least six months. To collect the data, Discourse Tests, Interview and Observation were conducted. The result shows that most of the informants applying the similar strategy in respond to the situation given. In some acts they understand to use the expression appropriately but they failed to understand the more appropriate expression in a formal situation. Abstract

This research aimed to explain the English Pragmatic Competence of Col language speakers in using directive act and to find out the extent to which Col language pragmatic competence influence the production of English pragmatic competence in directive act. The method used descriptive qualitative. The research subjects were 20 students who studied English consisting of students, collage students and graduates at Lubuklinggau. The data were collected by using questionnaire and pragmatic competence test. After that, the data were analyzed with description. The result of this research is that the pragmatic competence of Col language using directive acts is more understandable because respondents understand the use of language in the right situation may be different. The tests that have been carried out show that many of the respondents' answers are appropriate. They use English only in educational domains such as schools, colleges and courses. Therefore, the frequency of use of English is limited and other languages are used more frequently. In almost all expressions there is no significant negative transfer from L1 and L2 production to English, as all percentages below 50% except 57,5% command expressions have little influence on English production. These errors were found in the use of expressions in several formal situations, but they were not significant because not many pragmatic errors were found. In conclusion is that Col people understand how to use appropriate expressions in different situations, namely formal and informal situations, even though only the expressions of command have little influence. Abstract

This research aimed to explain the English Pragmatic Competence of Col language speakers in using expressive and commissive acts and to find out the extent to which Col language pragmatic competence influence the production of English pragmatic competence in expressive and commissive acts. The method used descriptive qualitative. The research subjects were 20 students who studied English consisting of students, collage students and graduates at Lubuklinggau. The data were collected by using questionnaire and pragmatic competence test. After that, the data were analyzed with description. From tests conducted by researcher, informants answered all tests according to different situations. The pragmatic competence of Col language speakers in using expressive and commissive acts, most of them understand that. Of all the expressions, there is no significant negative transfer from L1 and L2 production to English because all percentages are below 50%, which means they don't influence in English pragmatic production. In conclusion, Col speakers understand the use of appropriate expressions in different situations, namely in formal and informal situations.
