Abstract

This qualitative study aims at investigating the teaching aids used to teach vocabulary for young learners. The data were collected using questionnaires and interview to determine the kinds of teaching aids used to teach vocabulary, the challenges in implementing them, and how English teachers face these challenges. The data collected were analyzed qualitatively by referring to Miles & Huberman (1994). The results show that the dominant type of teaching aids used by the English teachers to teach English to the young learners is audio-visual which is a combination of visual and audio aids was seldomly used by the teachers. According to the interview, the teachers felt that students were more engaged by visuals and audiovisuals because teachers can place interesting decorations to guide the students; for example, a student's favorite cartoon character or animal. The result of the interview also showed that the teachers found challenges in implementing the teaching aids, namely (a) time consuming (b) quality of teaching aids (c) technical difficulties. To face the challenges, teachers usually consider alternatives that are equivalent to the media that should have been used, allocated time, and also skills in operating electronic to implement the teaching aids.

Abstract

The role of prospective teachers continues to evolve alongside advancements in education and technology. As digital learning environments become more prevalent, educators must be equipped with essential competencies, including online assessment literacy. This study examines the level of online assessment literacy among sixth-semester prospective teachers in the English Language Education Program at Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha). Given the increasing reliance on digital assessment tools, understanding prospective teachers' readiness is crucial for effective teaching and learning. This research involved 73 students who had completed assessment courses, utilizing a structured questionnaire to measure their proficiency across seven key dimensions of assessment. The findings indicate that most participants demonstrate a moderate level of online assessment literacy. On average, female students scored 50.5%, while male students scored 46.4%. The highest score among female students was in the Recognizing Ethics (RE) dimension (62.7%), whereas male students scored highest in the Communicating (CO) dimension (55.6%). Conversely, the lowest scores were recorded in the Developing (DE) dimension, with 36.8% for females and 31.9% for males, indicating difficulties in designing effective assessment tools. These findings highlight the need for practical training that enhances digital assessment competencies. Integrating workshops, digital assessment simulations, and targeted pedagogical training into the curriculum can help bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. This research provides valuable insights for teacher training programs, ensuring prospective educators are well-prepared for digital assessment challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how English teachers at SMA Negeri 3 Singaraja implement assessment in differentiated instruction. Using descriptive qualitative methods through observations and interviews, this study found that teachers utilize diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to identify students' prior knowledge, monitor learning progress, and measure final achievement. Diagnostic assessments help teachers map students' readiness, interests and learning styles, while formative assessments allow teachers to provide feedback and adjust learning according to students' needs. Summative assessments are used at the end of learning to evaluate overall mastery of the material. This practice shows that assessment is not only a tool for assessing learning outcomes, but also supports student-centred learning and is aligned with Merdeka Curriculum. The findings emphasize the importance of integrating different types of assessments to create flexible learning, accommodate students' diverse abilities, and motivate students to improve their learning outcomes.
