Abstract

The use of interactive digital online media in the English teaching and learning process has become increasingly widespread, especially since the outbreak of the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020. In this case, not only educational-based media such as Google Classroom, Edmodo, or various digital dictionaries, but also video conference service provider software, to social media and entertainment site networks have transformed into unlimited sources of teaching materials, especially for the field of English language science. Students are one of the groups that actively utilize various types of media as a means of learning and gaining knowledge and techniques that can be applied in their English production. This study was designed to identify high school students related to the use of internet-based interactive digital media and relate it to their English writing skills. A survey using a closed-ended questionnaire was conducted to obtain responses that lead to students' use of digital online media to then be analyzed in relation to their achievements in the writing test. This study found that the correlation between the use of interactive online media and students' English writing skills has a negative relationship. This can be seen from students' English writing skills which are inversely proportional to students' perceptions of the use of interactive online media.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to ascertain whether the reading comprehension levels of students who are taught the original TPRC strategy and those who are taught using picture in TPRC strategy differ noticeably. This study used a true-experimental design. It happened during the first semester of the second grade at SMP Islam 1 Kalirejo. A control group and an experimental group were used by the researcher. While the experimental group incorporated picture to the TPRC strategy, the control group employed the original TPRC strategy. According to the findings of the independent group t-test, the experimental and control groups' reading comprehension scores differed statistically significantly, with the significance level for both classes being less than 0.05. The mean score of the experimental group was higher (77.80) than that of the control group (68.42). These findings suggest that incorporating picture in TPRC strategy can effectively improve students’ reading comprehension. In addition, it is suggested that teachers should actively monitor student’s interactions and implement strategies to ensure all students are equally engaged.

Abstract

The use of a technique in the process of teaching writing as a complex skill has a crucial role. This research, the integration of the two techniques; brain-writing and small group discussion was applied in teaching writing descriptive text. The objectives of the research were to find out (1) a significant difference of students’ writing ability before and after being taught by using the integration the two techniques, (2) the aspect of writing which is affected the most by using the integration of the two techniques, (3) the students’ perception towards the implementation of the integration of the two techniques. In the context of methodology, the samples involved were 24 students in SMP Insan Mandiri Bandar Lampung. The data were collected by using pre and post-test of writing and perception questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using paired-sample t-test. The results showed the students’ writing achievement increased from 66.08 to 79.14. The p value is lower than 0.05, meaning that there is a significant difference of students’ writing ability between pretest and posttest. As for writing aspects, the most affected one was content. The students’ perception about the implementation of technique showed a positive result. Thus, the integration of the two techniques is effective to help students to generate and elaborate the ideas into a good descriptive text.
