Abstract

AbstractPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi hubungan antara kebiasaan siswa dalam menonton film berbahasa Inggris dengan penguasaan kosa kata. Subyek penelitian ini sebanyak 30 siswa pada kelas Frontrunner di English First (EF) Bandar Lampung. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah kuesioner dan vocabulary size test. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa nilai korelasi antara kedua variabel adalah 0.3 dan nilai pengaruhnya adalah 0.554. Lebih jauh, ditemukan data bahwa faktor frekuensi dan tingkah laku mempunyai hubungan yang signifikan dengan siswa yang mendapat skor tinggi dan sedang pada tes kosa kata, sementara itu pengulangan adalah faktor yang digunakan oleh sebagian besar siswa yang mendapat skor kosa kata rendah. Berdasarkan pada hasil, dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada hubungan antara kebiasaan siswa dalam menonton film berbahasa Inggris dan penguasaan kosa kata bahasa Inggris.  The objective of this research was to investigate the correlation between students habit in watching English movie and their vocabulary size. The subjects were 30 students in Frontrunner class of English First (EF) Bandar Lampung. The data collecting techniques used were questionnaire and vocabulary size test. The results showed that the correlation between the two variables was 0.3 and the value of X toward Y was 0.554. Furthermore, it was found that the frequency factor had a significant correlation with the students who got high and moderate score on vocabulary size test, while the repetition was the strategy used by the majority of students who got low score on vocabulary size test. Based on the result, it could be concluded that there was significant correlation between students watching English movie habit and their vocabulary size.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui efektifitas penggunaan picture series dalam pengajaran teks analitik eksposisi. Komponen di dalam teks dinilai dengan menggunakan rubrik untuk esai argumentatif. Tiga penilai telah dilibatkan dalam penelitian ini. Dua penilai merupakan guru bahasa inggris SMA yang bersangkutan dan satu penilai yang merupakan peneliti sendiri. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah kelas XI IPA 1 yang terdiri dari 34 siswa. Desain penelitian ini adalah one group pretest posttest dengan analisa data menggunakan paired sample t-test. Nilai rata-rata untuk pretest adalah 60.75 dan untuk posttest adalah 70.48. Dari analisa data diperoleh juga bahwa tvalue adalah 1.841 dengan (df)=33 di level signifikan 0.05=1.692. Karena tnilai lebih besar dari ttabel maka itu artinya H nol ditolak atau dengan kata lain picture series efektif digunakan dalam pengajaran teks analitik eksposisi.This study aimed at finding out whether the use of picture series was effective for teaching analytical exposition text. The components within text were scored by using an argumentative essay scoring rubric. Three raters were used in this research. Two of them were the English teachers and one of them was the researcher. The sample was class XI IPA 1 that consisted of 34 students. This research used one group pre-test post-test design and the data was analyzed with Paired sample  t- test. The average score of pre-test was 60.75 and the average score of post-test was 74.48. After analyzing the data, it was also found that the tvalue was 1.841with the degree of freedom (df)=33 at the level of significance 0,05=1.692. Since tvalue was greater than ttable, it concluded that the null hypothesis was rejected or in other words picture series was effective to be used in teaching analytical exposition text.Keywords: picture series, analytical exposition text, argumentative essay scoring rubric.

Abstract

Dalam pembelajaran, guru memiliki tugas untuk merancang pembelajaran pembelajaran, melaksanakan pembelajaran, dan mengevaluasi pembelajaran yang telah dilaksanakannya. Untuk dapat melakukan tugas tersebut guru harus memiliki kompetensi yang berkaitan hal-hal tersebut. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini  bertujuan bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan guru Bahasa Inggris SMP dalam menulis butir soal yang berbasis teks Inggris dari segi bahasa dan meningkatkan kemampuan guru Bahasa Inggris SMP dalam menulis butir soal yang berbasis teks Inggris yang memenuhi construct validity. Metode yang diterapkan dalam kegiatan pengabdian yang berupa pelatihan penulisan soal Bahasa Inggris berbasis teks ini meliputi: (1) ceramah yang diikuti dengan diskusi antara instruktur dengan peserta, dan peserta dengan peserta; (2) pemberian contoh dan analisis; (3) praktik membuat soal tes berbasis teks secara kelompok; (4) pemberian umpan balik dan diskusi  hasil praktik membuat soal tes berbasis teks; dan (5) pemberian tugas membuat soal tes berbasis teks secara individu. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pelatihan ini telah mencapai sasaran yaitu dapat memberi pengetahuan dan wawasan kepada para guru peserta pelatihan tentang assessment planning, assessment of reading, assessment of listening, assessment of speaking, dan assessment of writing yang dapat dilihat dari hasil pre-test dan post-test. Para peserta pelatihan antusias dalam mengikuti setiap pemaparan materi yang diberikan oleh narasumber. Berdasarkan hasil interview dengan para peserta pelatihan terlihat bahwa pemahaman mereka tentang materi pelatihan juga meningkat. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa para guru peserta pelatihan ini merasakan manfaat yang besar setelah mengikuti pelatihan ini. Kata kunci: butir soal, teks, guru Bahasa Inggris, assessmentIn teaching learning process, it is a must for teachers to design, implement, and evaluate the process. To be able to perform the responsibility, they are required to have a competence related to the matters. This community service was aimed at improving the ability of English teachers of junior high school in writing text-based question items correctly and appropriately in terms of linguistics and construct validity. It was conducted through (1) lecture and discussion; (2) example of analysis; (3) practice of making text-based test questions; (4) feedback; (5) task of constructing text-based test questions. It could be concluded that the aims of this activity were successfully achieved in terms of insight and knowledge transfers to the participants on assessment planning, assessment of reading, assessment of listening, assessment of speaking, and assessment of writing which could be seen from the results of their pre-test and post-test. The participants were enthusiastic in following each part of this activity. Based on the interviews with the participants, they stated that their understanding also increased. Thus, it can be concluded that the teacher participants obtained great benefits after attending this activity. Keywords: question items, text, English teachers, assessment

Abstract

Di tingkat Sekolah Dasar (SD), peningkatan hasil belajar dalam Pendidikan Pancasila dan Kewarganegaraan (PPKn) merupakan komponen penting dalam pembentukan karakter dan pemahaman nilai-nilai kebangsaan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar PPKn dengan menggunakan model numbered Head Together (NHT) dan media lapbook di SD Muhammadiyah Trayu. Siswa di kelas empat SD Muhammadiyah Trayu terlibat dalam penelitian ini, yang menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif deskriptif. Model pembelajaran NHT digunakan sebagai strategi untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa tentang materi, dan lapbook digunakan sebagai alat untuk visualisasi tugas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa menggunakan media lapbook bersama dengan model NHT dapat meningkatkan hasil belajar PPKn di SD Muhammadiyah Trayu. Siswa menunjukkan peningkatan partisipasi dan pemahaman materi, serta peningkatan hasil belajar (kognitif, afektif, dan psikomotor). Siswa juga lebih termotivasi untuk belajar karena suasana kelas yang interaktif dan kolaboratif dengan lapbook. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa model pembelajaran NHT dengan media lapbook dapat menjadi alternatif yang efektif untuk meningkatkan hasil belajar PPKn di tingkat SD. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini dapat digunakan sebagai referensi bagi guru dan pihak yang terlibat dalam pendidikan untuk mengembangkan strategi pembelajaran yang inovatif untuk meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan karakter di tingkat dasar.. Abstract

Employing a qualitative approach, this study aims to discover the types of grammatical interference that mostly occur in narrative texts written by Indonesian students at a senior high school level. The grammatical interference covered in this article is categorized into two, namely syntactical interference and morphological interference. Moreover, 20 eleventh-grader students of an Islamic school were chosen randomly to be the sample of this research. The students were asked to compose a narrative text with a topic that has been determined by the teacher. Their writings were then analyzed descriptively to find out the dominant types of grammatical interference made by the students. It was revealed that the students encountered morphological inferences related to tenses, articles, subject-plural forms, and pronouns. Besides, syntactical inferences regarding word order, noun phrase, and passive voice are found in the students’ writings. Thus, it implies that students often used the grammatical rules of their first language in composing their writings in English.

Abstract

Slang is a form of language, expressions, or specialized language usage commonly found in informal conversations, particularly within specific groups. Fathia Izzati, known as "kittendust," is a YouTube content creator with 695,000 subscribers. In her YouTube account, Fathia uploads videos related to English language learning terms in daily life, often incorporating slang words. This research aims to comprehend the meanings and processes of word formation in slang used by Fathia Izzati in her videos. The research methodology is descriptive qualitative, referencing George Yule's (2010) theories on slang word formation processes. Data were obtained from 15 videos uploaded by Fathia Izzati between November 2021 and December 2022. The findings reveal that out of Yule's ten slang and word formation theories, only five are reflected in the analyzed videos. Blending emerges as the most common method for creating new words, constituting 39.24% of all new terms. Other prevalent methods include doubling (34.18%) and halving (18.99%). Clipping accounts for 5.06%, while acronyms are the least common, comprising only 2.53%. This research provides insights into the use of slang by Fathia Izzati within the context of English language learning on YouTube.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to find out whether there was any improvement of the students’ writing skill in recount text after they have been taught by implementing direct written corrective feedback and to find out which aspect of writing that improves the most after the implementation of direct written corrective feedback in terms of micro skills. This research is a quantitative research. The design used was  one group pretest and posttest because the students’ writing skill was measured in one group of participants before and after the treatments were administered. The subjects were 28 students of class VIII A of SMPN 38 Bandar Lampung. The instrument was a writing test in form of essay. The data were in form of scores taken from the pretest and posttest and were analyzed by using Paired Sample t- test. The result showed there was a statistically improvement of students’ writing skill in recount text viewed from the pretest score to the posttest score (60.91 to 76.39) after they have been taught by implementing direct written corrective feedback. Furthermore, the feedback technique was not only effective in improving students’ recount writing in general, but also effective in improving students’ score in all aspects of writing: content, organization, vocabulary, language use and mechanics.  Language use was the aspect of writing that improved the most by direct feedback technique in terms of micro skills. Keywords: Direct written corrective feedback, recount text, writing.

Abstract

Vocabulary is the most crucial part of language learning. It provides the basis for the four language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. However, most EFL students, especially in Indonesia, struggle to learn English effectively, due to their limited vocabulary knowledge. This research aimed at finding out whether there is a significant improvement on students’ English vocabulary retention at SMPQTA An-Nur after the implementation of four vocabulary games. This research employed one-group pretest-posttest design, utilizing vocabulary translation test to obtain the data. Saturated sampling was used for this research due to the limited class and number of the seventh-grade students. The mean scores on both the pre-test and post-test were analyzed using the Paired-Sample T-Test with a significance level of 5% (0.05). The result shows that there is an improvement on students’ vocabulary translation test scores after the implementation of four vocabulary games by comparing students’ pre-test and post-test scores, which means that there is an increase in students vocabulary retention. With the help of SPSS 25 program, a significance (2-tailed) value of 0.000 was obtained. The significance (2-tailed) value was higher than the significance level (0.000<0.05) and t-value is higher than t-table (15.920>2.064); there is a significant positive difference. Therefore, the four vocabulary games are effective in improving students’ vocabulary retention. Keywords: English vocabulary, vocabulary retention, vocabulary games

Abstract

Vocabulary has an essential role in learning a language, especially in learning English as a foreign language that links four skills i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and all about words or particular sets of words. Therefore, the researcher conducted this research (1) to determine the significant improvement in students’ vocabulary achievement after the students were taught using jigsaw technique and (2) to reveal the difficulties students faced in learning vocabulary using jigsaw technique. This research used quantitative and qualitative methods with 32 students of class X.2 at SMAN 7 Bandar Lampung. This research used a vocabulary test and interview. Pre-test and posttest are used to collect the data. The researcher used a Repeated Measures t-test. The result showed that the pre-test mean was 70.08 and the post-test mean was 83.20, while the t-value is 9.186 at the significant level is 0.000.

Abstract

The use of interactive digital online media in the English teaching and learning process has become increasingly widespread, especially since the outbreak of the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020. In this case, not only educational-based media such as Google Classroom, Edmodo, or various digital dictionaries, but also video conference service provider software, to social media and entertainment site networks have transformed into unlimited sources of teaching materials, especially for the field of English language science. Students are one of the groups that actively utilize various types of media as a means of learning and gaining knowledge and techniques that can be applied in their English production. This study was designed to identify high school students related to the use of internet-based interactive digital media and relate it to their English writing skills. A survey using a closed-ended questionnaire was conducted to obtain responses that lead to students' use of digital online media to then be analyzed in relation to their achievements in the writing test. This study found that the correlation between the use of interactive online media and students' English writing skills has a negative relationship. This can be seen from students' English writing skills which are inversely proportional to students' perceptions of the use of interactive online media.Penggunaan media online digital interaktif dalam proses belajar mengajar Bahasa Inggris semakin marak terutama sejak merebaknya wabah Covid-19 pada 2020 lalu. Dalam hal ini, tak hanya media berbasis edukasi seperti Google Classroom, Edmodo, atau pun beragam kamus digital, namun juga perangkat lunak penyedia layanan video conference, hingga media sosial dan jejaring situs hiburan bertransformasi menjadi sumber bahan ajar tak terbatas terutama untuk bidang keilmuan Bahasa Inggris. Pelajar menjadi salah satu kelompok yang secara aktif memanfaatkan ragam jenis media ini sebagai sarana belajar dan memperoleh pengetahuan serta teknik yang dapat diterapkan dalam produksi Bahasa Inggris mereka. Penelitian ini dirancang untuk mengidentifikasi pelajar di tingkat SMA terkait penggunaan media digital interaktif berbasis internet dan menghubungkannya dengan keterampilan mereka dalam menulis bahasa Inggris (writing). Survei dengan menggunakan close-ended questionnaire dilakukan untuk memperoleh respon yang mengarah pada penggunaan media online digital para pelajar untuk kemudian dianalisis kaitannya dengan capaian mereka dalam writing test. Dalam penelitian ini didapati bahwa korelasi antara penggunaan media online interaktif dengan kemampuan menulis Bahasa Inggris siswa memiliki hubungan yang neagtif. Hal ini terlihat dari kemampuan menulis Bahasa Inggris siswa berbanding terbalik dengan persepsi siswa terhadap penggunaan media online interaktif.
