Abstract

One of the mangrove forests in Mempawah Regency is located in Siantan District. Mangrove forests have ecological, social, and economic functions to support the lives of living things that live around them. The extent and density of mangrove vegetation are essential parameters to determine the condition of mangroves in Siantan District to recommend rehabilitation that needs to be pursued. Data were collected from Landsat 7 images in 2010 and Landsat 8 images in 2021 with guided classification and visual interpretation to obtain a map of changes in mangrove land cover in 2010-2021. Vegetation density was obtained through Landsat Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) analysis, divided into five density classes: very dense, dense, medium, sparse, and unvegetated. This study found that the secondary mangrove forests in Kecamatan Siantan decreased by 176.35 hectares during 2010-2021, turning into shrubs, open land, and plantations, especially in former pond areas. The most extensive deforestation turned 107.18 hectares of secondary mangrove forest into shrubs. Reforestation occurred during 2010-2021 amounted to 123.55 hectares. Natural or artificial bare land turned into 71.44 hectares of mangrove ecosystem. In 2010, the dense class dominated the mangrove forest density (60.03%) but decreased in 2021 (14.9%). A sparse class of density was not detected in 2010, but in 2021, the area of sparse density was 148.53 hectares, composed of shrubs and coconut plantations.

Abstract

One of the ecological functions of green open space (RTH) is to accommodate biodiversity in urban areas by providing a habitat for wild plants and animals. Pollution, urbanization, and various other environmental pressures make green open spaces in urban areas more susceptible to disturbances, both natural and due to human activities, which can affect the existence of biodiversity within them, including butterflies, which have specificity and sensitivity to certain environmental conditions, thus acting as bioindicators. Assessment of butterfly species, habitat conditions, and assistance with problems was carried out at four green open space locations in the East Jakarta Administrative City (DKI Jakarta Province) and four green open space locations in Pontianak City (West Borneo Province) to determine the potential and effectiveness of green open space as habitat protection for butterflies. The assessment was carried out by observing the presence of butterflies using the time search method and measuring the environmental factors that form the habitat and their correlation with the butterfly community through quantitative analysis. The results of the study showed that there were 22 species of butterflies in green open space in the East Jakarta Administrative City and 17 species of butterflies in green open space in Pontianak City. Correlation analysis at the eight green open space locations showed the same pattern, namely that the occurrence of butterfly species increased along with the number of forage plant species (as hosts or food plants) and canopy density (as shelter plants). The clustered shape of green open space is also a characteristic of green open space, which supports the function of green open space as a refuge habitat for butterflies in urban areas.

Abstract

The Village Forest Management Institution (LPHD) Bumi Lestari of Penepian Raya Village has obtained a forest management license since 2014. Village forest is one of the social forestry schemes that aims to improve community welfare through the management of forest natural resources. However, the management must be based on sustainable forest sustainability because the forest is a vital support. This study aims to formulate a management strategy for Bumi Lestari Village Forest based on internal (strengths and weaknesses) and external (opportunities and threats) factors. The survey method was applied by collecting data through interviews with all administrators and members of LPHD Bumi Lestari. All internal and external factors were scored and weighted to find strategy priorities based on SWOT. Based on the value of all factors, the internal factor value was 0.52 and the external factor value was 0.92. Bumi Lestari Village Forest management strategy is in Quadrant I. Strategic opportunities on maximum utilization of strengths to use available opportunities. The existence of assistance and funding, can be utilized to increase institutional capacity in terms of administration, mastery of technology, and innovation of processed non-timber forest product derivatives. An effective marketing network is needed to overcome obstacles in the form of the large amount of transportation bias through waterways in the village. In the field of conservation, LPHD Bumi Lestari has been based on smart patrols but there is a need to increase the use of technology. Strengthening partnerships with the government, academics, private foundations, and fellow LPHDs can be a strength for LPHD Bumi Lestari for better village forest management.
