Abstract

This research discussed the semiotic analysis of idiomatic expressions found in The Maze Runner: The Death Cure movie by Wess Ball and its impact on English. This research aimed to find idiomatic expressions revealed in the dialogue in the movie; to find the meaning of symbols contained idiomatic expressions in dialogues; to find the impact of semiotic analysis in idiomatic expressions found in movie. In this research, researchers used qualitative research in the type of content analysis using descriptive approach to help the analysis of the data that found in the movie. The researchers looked for idiomatic expressions in the movie and symbols of idiomatic expressions. Finally, researchers reveal the impact of semiotic analysis in idioms found in movie on English. From the results, there are 59 idiom expressions divided into lexemic and sememic idioms. From lexemic idiom found 37 phrasal verbs; 2 irreversible binomials; 10 phrasal compounds; and 1 incorporating verb. From the sememic idiom found 2 idioms of politeness; 1 idiom of detachment; 4 idioms of greeting; and 2 famous quotations idioms. There are 26 symbols from 59 idiom expression in the movie. Its effects on English make students more fluent in English and look like native speakers, add new vocabulary, make students aware of cultural differences in language, and know more about meaning.

Abstract

This research is about the use of YouTube on the Fireman Sam channel to improve vocabulary skills in teaching listening.  The objectives of this research are: 1) To identify the Firemans’ Sam channel improve vocabulary mastery in teaching listening; 2) To identify Firemans’ Sam Channel is effective in vocabulary mastery. This research method was a quasi-experimental in which the data collection used two tests, pretest and posttest, both of which were listening tests. Then the data were analyzed using t-test to find out whether there is a significant difference after being given treatment. The finding of this research before getting the treatment the sample got the mean of each test in pre-test is 43,33. After being seen from the t-test that there is a significant value of 0.000 because it is less than 0.05, the researchers assume that the use of YouTube on Fireman Sam's channel improves vocabulary skills that will be effective in teaching students' listening and can be used as an alternative media in teaching listening.

Abstract

This research aims to find out what are the type of autism experience by Raymond in the movie “Rain Man” and to find out how speech production of autistic experience by Raymond. The method used in this research is qualitative and the object studied is the main actor in the film "Rain Man" named Raymond. The researcher collected data from the film and from dialogue transcripts. After the data is obtained then transferred to a computer and listened to many times, then transcribed into conversation. Data were analyze using the theory from Turkington & Anan (2007) to analyze the type of autism and Scovel (1998) to analyze speech production experience by Raymond. Based on this theory, it is known that the main character in the film "Rain Man", namely Raymond, has autistic (high-function), and Raymond has difficulty producing language. He repeated his words, the same phrase, or sentence from the other person when he or she cannot understand the meaning of the conversation. This paper recommended for readers to understand language production in someone with autism, especially for those who have had contact with autistic people in their surrounding environment. And for future researchers who conduct research in the same field, especially those who have the same interest in language disorders in autistic children as a reference or comparison that may be relevant to their research.
