Abstract

This research is intended to find out whether Suggestopedia method improved students’ reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMPN 8 Banda Aceh. The sample was taken by random sampling of the students of class VIII-1. The technique of data collection, the researcher used pre-test, treatment and post-test. The materials used in the test were narrative texts. The reading comprehension which tested was main idea, detail information, vocabulary and reference. The researcher used one group pre-test and post-test design. The tests consisted of 10 multiple choice questions of narrative texts. The technique of data analysis, the researcher used statistical formula. The mean score of pre-test was (53.18) and the post-test was (79.09). The finding showed that the improvement of the mean was 25.91. The critical value of 0.05 significant level was 2.080 and degree of freedom was 21. T-test 4.197 was higher than t-table (2.080). As a result, Suggestopedia method can improve the students’ reading comprehension in narrative text particularly at the VIII-1 of SMPN 8 Banda Aceh.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the teachers’ problems in teaching speaking to young learners at Jasmine Education Center. Those problems were gathered from classroom observation and interviewed the teachers.  In order to investigate the teachers’ problems in teaching speaking to young learners, the researcher used qualitative study to gather the data in this research. The researcher observed the problems found on two English teachers at Jasmine Education Center. The researcher followed the observation guide from Bryne. Additionally, an interview was intended to find out the teachers’ answers in order to know teachers’ problems in teaching speaking to young learners. The interview guide was taken from Kayi The classroom observation showed that the problems found related to class management which were response towards learners and proper environment in teaching and learning process. The answers of the interviews, the researcher found that the teachers’ problems in time prediction in teaching, the way the teacher commented students’ mistakes and lack of ability in analyzing students’ difficulties in learning. In conclusion, the researcher successfully found the problems on the teachers in teaching speaking to young learners in Jasmine Education Center.

Abstract

This study is intended to find out the perception of students toward English club activities in speaking. This study was conducted at SMAN 3 Banda Aceh. The researcher used two instruments to find the data needed, namely; questionnaire and interview. Both questionnaire which adapted from Kasmalinda (2011) and interview were used by the researcher to figure out the perception of students toward English club activities in practicing speaking. The researcher combined both of the instruments to support the data of the research. the sample of this study was the students of SMAN 3 Banda Aceh who have participated English club. The researcher took 40 students as the sample (all English club members). Based on the data obtained from both instruments used, the findings showed that students perceived English club plays an important role in supporting students to practice speaking. The students also think that English club has a great way to encourage students’ motivation to practice speaking with friends. The students also viewed that they feel glad while joinning English club. In other words, English club gets them more experiences and more knowledge. In addition, the class atmosphere tends to be fun and comfortable and it makes them more interested in practicing speaking.

Abstract

This study investigated how the teachers used teacher talks in their classroom. This research was focused on analyzing how teachers in Pulo Aceh, Aceh Besar, used the features of teacher talk in improving students’ English speaking ability. SETT (Self Evaluation by Teacher Talk) designed by Walsh used to identify the features of teacher talk occurred in teaching and learning process. In addition, observation sheet was also used as the instrument of this study. From the findings, the writer found that there are eight of fourteen features used by the teachers in their classroom namely display question, extended teacher turn, teacher interruption, extended learner turn, extended wait-time, content feedback, form-focused feedback and direct repair. From these eight features, there were two of eight features used inappropriately by one of two teachers. Therefore, it can be concluded that the teachers has used teacher talk in their teaching and learning process, however the implementation of the features were not optimal. It is suggested the teacher should utilize more features of teacher talk in improving students’ ability in speaking so that the outcomes of the students in speaking is increased.
