Abstract

The drying of spirituality and weakening of cohesiveness in the midst of materialistic hedonistic modern world become major challenge for the adherents of official religions in Indonesia. The practice of religions is considered too much focusing on ritual aspects. Therefore, those teachings cannot give the real meaningfulness of religious life. Consequently, some adherents of official religions begin to see other spiritual/mysticism sects. This study describes the social cohesiveness among muslims who become members of Pangestu, a spiritual-mysticism sect widely spreading among Javanese society in Indonesia. This research shows that the Pangestu in Salatiga, Central Java, can fulfill social, economic, and spiritual needs of its members. Among the underlying factors that make Pangestu succeed to meet its members’ needs and expectations are the capability of the members to intensely communicate with each other through meetings and bawaraos (Jv, informal gathering), the great concern between members, good-example of leadership, the defense of Pangestu’s good name, and the satisfaction in experiencing meaningfulness of religious practices.[Kekeringan spiritual dan lemahnya kebersamaan di tengah dunia modern yang serba hedonistik menjadi tantangan utama bagi para pemeluk agama di Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing XI grade students’ scientific thinking abilities on the implementation of the scientific approach.  82 students of XI grade science class at three state senior high schools in Surakarta involved in this study. The students’ scientific thinking abilities illustrated as the students’ competence in seven aspects: the purpose of science; science question, science information, science interpretation, science concept, science assumption, science implication (Paul & Elder, 2003). The data on students’ scientific thinking abilities were collected using essay test on worksheet and interview methods. The instrument had been validated by expert judgement and students as a user. The scores were used to represent the students’ scientific thinking abilities in three categories (low, middle, high).  The results of the study showed that students’ competence in seven aspects of scientific thinking abilities: purpose of science (62,00%); science question (36,6%), science information (39,66%), science interpretation (41,00%), science concept (43,33), science assumption (38,33%), science implication (21,33%). Therefore, it concluded that the XI grade students’ scientific thinking abilities on the implementation of scientific approach was at the low category. It was suggested that the learning model based scientific approach be conducted for the students’ scientific thinking abilities improvement.

Abstract

Learning resources and learning models are the two main components that determine learning success. Of the many learning models, Problem-based Learning (PBL) is one of the most recommended in biology learning. The purpose of this content analysis was to identify the emergence of PBL syntax in junior high school biology textbooks. The population in this study were all biology textbooks for the VII graders, while the sample was three biology textbooks that are often used by VII graders in Surakarta. As the results, the averages of each PBL step emerged in the textbooks analyzed i.e. problem-oriented activity, organizing to collect data, assisting independent investigations, artifacts presentations, and analyzed/evaluated the process of overcoming the problem were 17%, 47%, 23%, 2%, and 11%, respectively. Thus, it can be concluded that the biology textbooks analyzed have applied PBL learning models, yet the proportion between steps is not balanced.

Abstract

This study aims to 1) test the effectiveness of using simple and complex problem-based learning models in improving students' creative thinking skills and 2) test the effectiveness of simple and complex problem-based learning models in improving students' creative thinking skills based on different academic skills. This research was quasi-experimental with a pre-test-post-test non-equivalent control group design involving 96 students in grade VII taken by cluster random sampling including a control class with a simple problem-solving model (SPS), experimental class 1 using the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) learning model, and experimental class 2 using the IDEAL-Problem solving (IPS) learning model. The hypothesis test used the N-Gain Score and ANCOVA. The results reveal that the simple problem-based learning model, namely SPS, is less effective in improving students’ creative thinking skills. While complex problem-based learning models, namely CPS and IPS, are effective enough to improve students' creative thinking skills. Both simple and complex problem-based learning models can improve the creative thinking skills of students with different academic skills. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the most effective model for improving the creative thinking skills of students with different academic skills is the CPS learning model.
