Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The dynamics of communication that occur in society to recover from disaster situations is an important study. Awareness of the situation and the independence of citizens to find solutions will be the key to the success of sustainable development. Through a case study in the Rahmat Tani community in Ombo Sirenja Village, Donggala District, Central Sulawesi, this research focuses on the dynamics of communication when post-disaster development ideas are actually born from the community. The community here is seen as a subject trying to recover from a post-disaster situation, and rebuild economic stability after the disaster situation is over. Therefore, the main theoretical study in this study is the theory of the role of communication in development in society (communication for development) or also known as communication for social change (SCS) which implements participatory communication by farming communities. Participatory communication exists as a way to support development in society by applying the principles of equality and openness to all parties involved. As a result, the Rahmat Tani community was formed from a shared awareness that presents solutions to increase economic independence for the people in their village.

Abstract

This paper discusses participatory communication for disaster risk reduction through community radio. Community radio is managed independently by volunteers. This research uses a case study approach: interviews, FGDs, and document studies on community radio collected data. The results show that community radio plays an essential role at each stage of disaster management. In addition, community radio is also engaged in increasing the capacity of the community by providing needed information, such as information on agriculture and sports. Stakeholders who play a role in community radio consist of volunteers, the community, government, and non-governmental organizations. Volunteers and residents play a role in running community radio, and the government, through the disaster management agency, provides factual information about disasters. Non-Governmental Organizations play a role by providing training for volunteers. Community radio has financing, equipment maintenance, and volunteer regeneration challenges. Various efforts need to be made by all stakeholders to face these challenges.

Abstract

The development of the beauty industry cannot be separated from environmental issues. Since, most of the waste in Indonesia comes from cosmetic packaging. Cosmetic companies need to respond to this problem and promote environmental sustainability. However, companies need to involve consumers to get more significant results and raise awareness among the wider community. The Body Shop Indonesia initiated this collective action that involves consumers through the Refill Station Program. Our research used a case study approach and applied a strategy communication for sustainable development model to see how The Body Shop Indonesia promotes environmental sustainability in the Refill Station program. The results of the study show that collective action can be an innovative strategy in resolving environmental issues. The company carried out this innovation by involving external stakeholders from the problem identification process through program execution. By involving external stakeholders from the beginning, companies can create effective programs and encourage public engagement.
