Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is one of major health problems in Indonesia because of its high number of incidence. Under five children are the most vulnerable age groups to ARI. It is estimated that children in average will experience 3-6 events of ARI every year. Unhealthy housing conditions such as unadequate temperature and humidity of bedrooms may affect ARI incidence. The purpose of this research is to determine whether temperature and humidity play as risk factors for ARI among under five children in Panembahan Village of Yogyakarta City, by conducting a case control study Samples were determined based on diagnostic results in Puskesmas Kraton medical record. As the case group was children who were diagnosed with ARI and those who were not was belong to the control group. To measure the physical condition in children’ bedroms, the instruments used were digital thermohygrometer, rollmeter, and questionnaire. Results of the study showed that the OR for temperature was 1,818 (95% CI=0,518 – 6,382; p value 0,347) and for humidity was 4,030 (95% CI=1,372 – 11,839; p value=0,010). It is advised for residents in Panembahan Village to keep the temperature and humidity inside their house fulfilling the requirement by regularly open the windows every morning and afternoon for allowing good air circulation.

Abstract

Restaurants appear and develop in line with consumers needs. Therefore, if they are not sup-ported with good application of sanitation, the existence of restaurants may contribute to health problem such as food poisoning as well as the spread of gastrointestinal disease, for example, diarrhoea. The study was aimed to understand the relationship between the application of sani-tation among restaurants in Depok Beach of Bantul and comsumers’ satisfaction by conducting a cross sectional survey. A hundred visitors of five chosen restaurants in the beach were interview-ed as the respondents. The results showed that three out of the five restaurants had reach the good quality of sanitation and the majority of the respondents (61 %) satisfied with the sanitation condition. The chi-square statistical test revealed that there is a relationship between the applica-tion of sanitation and consumers’ satisfaction (p value < 0,001). Based on the those results, it is advised for the owners of the restaurants which were already healthy to maintain the good condi-tion and for those whose restaurants were not, to make an improvement. For tourism agency and health officers, it is advised as well to do and to up-level a periodical health education which consist of the importance of providing good sanitation and periodical sanitation inspection by should also be scheduled.

Abstract

One type of public places which has to be supervised in terms of its sanitation is swimming pool because it is related with water usage that may has important role as disease transmission medi-um among the visitors. Good swimming pools must have good environmental conditions and provide appropriate sanitation facilities. The study was aimed to know the relationship between the perception of visitors about those requirements and their interest for coming back. The study locations were three swimmning pools in Sleman Regency as representation of urban, semi ur-ban and rural areas. The study was a survey with cross sectional approach, where by using quo-ta sampling method, a total of 144 visitors were selected as respondents, and were distributed proportionally in each pool. Data about visitors’ perception and interest were obtained by using questionnaire. The results showed that 79,86 % of the respondents have good perception on the environmental conditions of the swimming pools they used; and 81,94 % of the respodents were willing to coming back to the pools some times. A significant but not too strong relationship was found between those perception and interest (p value < 0,001, coeffcient of contingency 0,436); and among the three swimming pools, those perception and interest was found significantly diffe-rent (each p values < 0,001).

Abstract

In general, clean water used for daily needs must meet the standards of quality and quantity. In 8 Februari 2013, the measurement of water taken from dug well located at Muhammadiyah Islamic Junior High School in Karangkajen, indicated that the concentration of iron and turbidity exceed-ing the thresholds regulated by MInistry of Health decree No.416 in 1990, so that it need to be processed, one of which is by using filtration medium consists of quartz sand and pumice brec-cia. The study was aimed to identify the influence of the thickness of those medium in reducing concentration of iron and turbidity, by conducting an experiment which followed pre-test post-test with control group design. Data from six replications from three treatment groups and one control group showed that: Filter A (20 cm thicked quartz sand and 60 cm pumice breccia) could reduce iron and turbidity in 83,35 % and 88,99 % respectively; Filter B (30 cm quartz sand 50 cm pumi-ce breccia) reduced iron in 85,52 % and turbidity in 89,81 %; and Filter C (both quartz sand and pumice breccia in 50 cm thickness) could reduce the two parameters in 77,14 % and 88,07 %, respectively; meanwhile in the control group, iron concentration and turbidity were also decreas-ed as much as 76,14 % and 73,18 %. Further statistical analysis with one way anova at 95 % le-vel of significance, concluded that the thickness variation of filtration media affected the reduct-ion of both parameters (p-values: 0,038 and 0,045, respectively). Subsequent analysis with LSD test showed that Filter B had the highest ability.

Abstract

Boarding houses rent rooms for temporary stays. For students who living far from parents these places are their second home because almost of their activities are carried out in the room, included studying which needs high concentration. Based on the preliminary survey held in the female boarding houses located behind the Polytechnic of Health of Yogyakarta, it was found that the average measurement of light intesity was 24,81 lux and most rooms had unsuited room arrangement. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between light intensityand room arrangement and the level of studying concentration among the Female Boarding House of Kajor, by conducting a cross sectional approached survey. There were 60 boarding rooms under the study with 60 students occupant who were selected purposively as the respondents. The light intensity was measured by lux meter, the room arrangement was assessed by a check list and the studying concentration was identified by using a questionnaire. The results show that only 46,7% rooms had adequate light intensity, only 48,3% rooms had suited room arrangement, and respondents who had bad concentration outnumbered those who had the good ones.Data analysis with using Spearman rank correlation test at 5% significance level, concludes that both light intensity and room arrangement are significantly have high and positive correlations with studying concentration, i.e. the corresponding ? coefficients were 0,991 and 0,951, respectively, and the all p-values were below 0,001.
